This paper describes the evolution of “recognition of need for data” and “strategical thinking”, two types of thinking identified by Wild and Pfannkuch in their Framework for Statistical Thinking in Empirical Enquiry, as well as its relevance for math teacher professional development. The research was carried out with ten in-service secondary-school math teachers during an educational experience (at Bogotá, Colombia), who, in the beginning, showed high performance in procedural knowledge of data analysis. The experience was founded on project based learning that participants proposed and conducted via a survey concerning implications of a Bill, relevant for their job context. These teachers made mistakes and showed difficulties during the two first stages of the investigative cycle, problem formulation, and research planning,  due possibly to their inexperience in designing an empirical inquiry. Teacher educator’s guidance, to turn mistakes into learning opportunities and teachers’ active participation, promoted the development of statistical thinking, especially linked to the types aforementioned. Abstract: Spanish Este artículo describe el desarrollo de “reconocimiento de la necesidad de los datos” y “pensamiento estratégico”, dos de modos de razonamiento identificados por Wild y Pfannkuch (1999) en su marco para pensamiento estadístico en investigación empírica, así como su importancia en la formación de profesores de matemáticas. La investigación se lleva a cabo con diez profesores de matemáticas en ejercicio, durante una experiencia de formación (Bogotá, Colombia), quienes al inicio del curso mostraron un buen nivel de conocimiento procedimental en análisis de datos. En el marco del Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos, los profesores propusieron y desarrollaron una encuesta relacionada con las implicaciones de la implementación de un proyecto de ley, relevante para ellos. Los profesores cometieron errores y mostraron dificultades durante las dos primeras partes del ciclo investigativo, formulación del problema y planeación de la investigación, debido a su falta de experiencia en la formulación de un estudio empírico. La orientación del formador, para convertir las debilidades en oportunidades de aprendizaje, y la participación activa de los profesores favorecieron el desarrollo de razonamiento estadístico, especialmente asociado a los dos tipos de razonamientos ya mencionados.

This article aims to study on the readiness of history teachers to inculcate historical thinking skills among students. This study focused on four aspects which includes 1) Procedural Knowledge, and 2) Pedagogical Knowledge. Thus, to achieve the purpose of the study, quantitative methods are used. Questionnaires were distributed to 30 history teachers in a secondary school in Batu Pahat district. The results showed that there were no significant differences between teachers who were trained to teach History and those who are not. However, there was a significant difference between teachers with ten years of teaching experience with the readiness of history teachers.

Robotics technology has become increasingly common both for businesses and for private citizens. Primary and secondary schools, as a mirror of societal evolution, have increasingly integrated science, technology, engineering and math concepts into their curricula. Our research questions are: “In teaching robotics to primary and secondary school students, which pedagogical-methodological interventions result in better understanding and knowledge in the use of sensors in educational robotics?”, and “In teaching robotics to primary and secondary school students, which analytical methods related to Learning Analytics processes are proposed to analyze and reflect on students’ behavior in their learning of concepts and skills of sensors in educational robotics?”. To answer these questions, we have carried out a systematic review of the literature in the Web of Science and Scopus databases regarding robotics sensors in primary and secondary education, and Learning Analytics processes. We applied PRISMA methodology and reviewed a total of 24 articles. The results show a consensus about the use of the Learning by Doing and Project-Based Learning methodologies, including their different variations, as the most common methodology for achieving optimal engagement, motivation and performance in students’ learning. Finally, future lines of research are identified from this study.

Project-based learning (PBL) has been thoroughly integrated in university sustainable development curricula, but has not been well-established in curricula used at pre-university educational levels. Integrating real-world settings into the teaching of secondary school students can help to promote problem-solving skills and competencies at younger ages, which is a crucial task in sustainability education. Therefore, in this article we describe the results of a case study on the development of sustainable food products that involved a university and two secondary schools in Austria. The methods used in this case study were drawn from the transdisciplinary case study (TCS) and the PBL literature. Data were collected by carrying out participatory research methods such as photovoice, focus group discussions, food diaries, student evaluations, and surveys. We divided the study design into three phases: (1) exploration, (2) product ideation, and (3) product prototyping and optimisation. The case study illustrates that the use of PBL research approaches by students at different levels of education provides promising results, if the research process is clearly structured and managed. When a demand for learning is encountered by students, secondary school teachers and university researchers must provide the students with additional sources of information. The establishment and management of a transinstitutional research setting is a promising, yet time-consuming endeavour.

The change of paradigm of university education level in Indonesia has demanded changes in its curriculum. More skill-based curriculum is demanded as the result of global competition. As the paradigm change, the teaching method is should be changed as well. Translation/Interpreting I course in English Education Department of STKIP Suar Bangli has been changed to be more skill-based course as before it was emphasized on theory only. This course was taught by using Project Based Learning approach in order to give more practices to the students rather than teaching theories. This approach was conducted in 1 semester consisting of 16 meetings. It was done in fifth semester students of English Education Department of STKIP Suar Bangli. It was qualitative descriptive study which aiming at describing how was the implementation of Problem Based Learning in this course. Some instruments were utilized such as documentation, observation sheet, questionnaire and evaluation rubric. The data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the finding it was found that the students were having probem in the beginning of this implementation but finally they realized that this approach is much more helping them in learning translation/interpreting I.

This chapter examines the instructional intervention aimed at enhancing source-based compare-contrast writing in the secondary school students. Conceptually, it relies on the schema theory as a cognitive basis for integrated reading-writing instruction. The theory asserts that writing and reading both generate meaning using similar cognitive processes and types of knowledge: meta-knowledge of reading and writing strategies in relation to communicative goals, domain and textual knowledge, procedural knowledge that involves integrating writing and processing information while reading the text. Methodologically, the instruction is based on read-write cycle and was carried out in a secondary public school of Kyiv, with the 10th-grade students being the participant (n=22). The general hypothesis about a positive impact of read-write cycle instruction is partially confirmed in the research, which is an indication of the necessity to give further insight into the issue.
