Undertaking suitable land, including former shrimp ponds for rice, is required to cope with future rice shortages. The purpose of this study was to identify the soil morphology and physicochemical properties, determine soil fertility status and assess irrigated rice suitability of ex-shrimp ponds. Soil morpho-physicochemical properties such as soil color, structure, texture, pH, organic-C, P2O5, K2O, base saturation, and cation exchange capacity were determined. The resulting data was then matched into the criteria for BSCR and SLAN/CCDS, five major soil fertility criteria, and ICALRRD land suitability. Soil physiographical, morphological, and physicochemical analysis suggested that the soil developed from the alluvial site of calcareous-marl parent material located at saturated backswamp, then permanently drained. ESP, SAR, and salinity values were detected relatively lower than saline, sodic, and saline-sodic soil. The entire cations fell below BCSR ideal ratios, whereas all exchangeable K were detected below the CCDS/SLAN thresholds. Actual suitability for land units of A, B, and C were S3-rc,na, S3-na and S3-rc,nr,na,eh, respectively. The improvement such as fertilization, amelioration, slope flattening/cut-filling, and irrigation management increases all land units to S1. This study pinpointed the importance of former shrimp pond soil to provide suitable land for rice crop cultivation. Also, encouraging further research to identify the origin of alluvial parent material from the soil at the study site

Besides influenced by genotype, the quality and quantity of patchouli essential oil were controlled by soil as a growing medium. The development of patchouli plantation in Lamala District is still hampered by negative stigma from the community. It is believed, the strong absorption rate from patchouli could lead to soil nutrient deficiency. The purpose of this study was to determine soil fertility status and evaluate its suitability for patchouli plant in 3 land units (e.g., uncultivated, cultivated with fertilization, and cultivated without fertilization). The method used is an Exploratory-Descriptive Survey. The determination of soil properties was based on physical properties such as texture, and chemical properties such as pH, organic-C and nitrogen, P2O5 and K2O, base cations and cation exchange capacity/CEC, and Fe. The data then matched to Soil Fertility and Land Suitability Criteria for the patchouli plant. The result showed that the chemical properties in 3 land units had slightly acidic, high CEC, medium base saturation, moderate P2O5 content, and moderate organic-C content. Meanwhile, the K2O content of the land without patchouli was very low and the patchouli with and without fertilizer was low. Soil fertility status in 3 land units was classified as marginally suitable (S3-rc,na), this is due to the limiting factors; soil texture (rc) and P2O5 (na).

ABSTRACTThis study aims to determine the effect of the location distance from the river bank and the depth ofsoil layer to the soil chemical properties in the tidal land area. The study was conducted in April untilJune 2016 in the tidal areas of Bajarum village, District of Kota Besi, East Kotawaringin, CentralBorneo Province. The study used survey methods and soil sampling in the field, analysis of soilsamples in the laboratory and continued with analysis and description of data. Soil sampling wasconducted at distances of 250, 500, 750, 1.000, 1.250 and 1.500 meters from the Mentaya river bankat two depth soil layers (0 - 25 cm and 25 - 50 cm). The soil chemistry properties analyzed includedpH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation, organic C, N total, total P2O5, total K2O,alumunium and hydrogen exchangeable and soil fertility status. The results of study showed that: (1)The further distance of soil from the position of Mentaya river bank there is an increase of organic C,total P2O5, total N, total K2O, pH, CEC, base saturation and soil fertility status, on the contraryshowed a decrease in alumunium and hydrogen exchangeable. The limiting factor of soil fertility ismainly the low base saturation, besides that at some point observation also due to low CEC, totalP2O5 and total K2O. (2) Sub soil layer (25 - 50) cm has a higher pH and base saturation valuescompared to topsoil layer (0 - 25) cm. In contrast, topsoil layer has CEC, alumunium and hydrogenexchangeable, total P2O5, total K2O, total N and organic C values higher than sub soil layer.Keywords: distance from river, tidal soil, soil chemical properties.

Abstract BackgroundThe complex nature of the relationship and interaction between LULC and slope gradients resulted in the decline of soil fertility parameters, which aggravate the reduction of sustainable productivity in Ethiopia in general and the study area in particular. This study was aimed to determine the effects of land use land cover and slope gradients on the physicochemical properties of soil in study area A total of 27 composite soil samples were collected from 0-20cm depth under three dominant adjacent LULC across three slope with three replications. The collected soil samples were analyzed for selected soil physicochemical properties. Two-way ANOVA was used to test the mean differences of the soil fertility parameters. ResultThe mean values of soil physicochemical parameters showed that, SOC, TN, AvP, CEC, exchangeable bases (Ca2+ Mg2+, K+, and Na+), PBS, and percentage of clay contents of cultivated land and steep slope gradient (15-30%) were low and significantly different at (P≤0.05) than forest and grad grassland of the same slope gradient.. The gentle slope (3-8%) gradients of the forest lands had the lowest BD and high TP as compared to the others.ConclusionThe overall soil fertility status of the steep slope gradient (15-30%) of cultivated lands is lower than others and cultivating the steep slope is the cause for productivity loss in the study sub-watershed. Therefore, proper land-use planning and the use of integrated soil fertility management strategy give better production and keep the soil fertility status to a better level.

Soil physical and chemical properties are the main factors that significantlyinfluence vanilla production. This study aimed to identify the soil’s physicaland chemical properties, determine the soil fertility status, and evaluate the soilsuitability for vanilla plants cultivated at three villages in Tinangkung UtaraDistrict. This research has been carried out at the long-term monoculture of thevanilla plantation. The soil fertility properties have determined based onphysical properties such as texture (pipete method) and chemical propertiessuch as pH, organic C content (Walkey and Black), P2O5 (olsen) and K2O(HCL25%), base saturation/KB dan cation exchange capacity/CEC ) NH4OAcpH7). The data then matched to PPT soil fertility and BBSDLP land evaluationcriteria for the vanilla plant. The result showed that the soil in the study sitehas clayey texture, neutral soil reaction, moderate KB and P2O5, and moderateto high CEC. On the other hand, the soil exhibited lower content of organic Cand K2O. Despite soil fertility status determined as low, the evaluation analysisresulted marginally suitable, which could be optimised to highly suitable.

It is possible to prepare soil fertility maps by use of MS office (word / Excel / power point) using village land map with survey numbers in excel sheet. The village Itagi is a part of Ranebennur taluk, Karntaka, India which has major soil types black clay soil and red sandy loam soil. Problem cause analysis indicated the low soil fertility status and unscientific use of fertilizers as the reasons for low crop yields. In 86 random locations (on selected survey numbers) soils are sampled, labeled and processed. Samples are analyzed for soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon, macro nutrients and micro nutrients. The status of soil for each property is classified into three classes. Looking to each survey number on the excel sheet, the polygons are filled with colours for respective classes (low, medium and high). The results revealed that 69 per cent of samples belong to alkaline pH and oil salinity is medium in the area. Available nitrogen and phosphorous are low (59 % and 48 %) and available potash is medium (70 %). Organic C belongs to medium to low category. B belongs to low category, while majority of the soils have low status of other micronutrients except Cu. The DEXCEL maps prepared for pH, Av. NPK and organic C indicate the status of soil properties in the village land on respective survey numbers. Which side of the village, the particular soil parameter belongs to low category can be observed and suitable measure can be adopted for the management.

<p align="center"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p align="center"><strong><em> </em></strong></p><p><strong><em>Effect of Source Rocks and Soil Chemical Towards Land Fertility Potential in Sula Kepulauan District, North Maluku Province.</em></strong><em> </em><em>The study</em><em> aimed to determine the condition of soil fertility potential. Parameters used as the basis of assessment of potential fertility of the soil were the type of </em><em>main rock, weathering processes and mineral content of the native rock while chemically research was emphased on organic matter content, soil pH, CEC, base saturity and essential nutrients (N, P, K). General lithology in the study area </em><em>were grouped </em><em>into rocks and rock volkan sediman. Aluvio-marine sedimentary rocks and aluvio-collovium were deposition materials from a variety of rocks in the study contain</em><em>ed a number of nutrients and organic matter. Meanhile volkan rocks included basalt and andesite-granidiorit neutral to alkaline</em><em>. Contain</em><em>ed elements that produced fertile lands both physically and chemically. Based on the analysis, the average soil</em><em> was classified as slightly acid (pH 5.6). The lower layers of soil reaction on average relatively</em><em> was acidic (pH 5.1). Soil organic matter in the form of organic-C showed the top layer of a low average (1.58%), whilst the layer below average </em><em>was very low (0.83%). CEC soil layers above and below the average were moderate (20.66 me/100 g) and (19.6 me/100 g). Base saturations (KB) to these two layers of soil on top and below the average were</em><em> classified as moderate (55%) and (51%). Levels of nitrogen (N-total) topsoil with layers below average </em><em>are low</em><em> valued (0.18%) and (0.11%). Classified as very low, phosporus level in both layers were above the average which were 5.40 ppm and 3.10 ppm respectively. Potassiums were very low in the second layer of 5.13 mg/100 g and 3.81 mg/100 g. The parameters used to assess soil fertility status were CEC, KB, P2O5 which were extracted with HCl 25%, and K2O was extracted with HCl 25% and C-organic soil. Parameter yang dijadikan dasar penilaian potensi kesuburan tanah adalah jenis, proses pelapukan, dan kandungan mineral batuan induk sedangkan secara kimia penelitian ditekankan pada kandungan bahan organik, pH tanah, KTK, KB, dan unsur hara esensial (N, P, K). Secara umum litologi di wilayah studi dikelompokan ke dalam batuan sediman dan batuan volkan. Batuan sedimen aluvio-marine dan aluvio-koluvium merupakan bahan-bahan endapan dari berbagai batuan di wilayah studi yang banyak mengandung unsur hara dan bahan organik. Batuan volkan meliputi andesit-basal dan granidiorit bersifat netral sampai basa, mengandung unsur-unsur yang menghasilkan tanah-tanah subur baik secara fisik maupun kimia. Berdasarkan hasil analisis tanah pH rata-rata tergolong agak masam (pH 5,6). Lapisan bawah reaksi tanah rata-rata tergolong masam (pH 5,1). Bahan organik tanah dalam bentuk C-organik menunjukkan pada lapisan atas rata-rata rendah (1,58%), sementara lapisan bawah rata-rata sangat rendah (0,83%). KTK tanah lapisan atas maupun bawah rata-rata tergolong sedang (20,7 me/100 gram) dan (19,6 me/100 gram). Kejenuhan basa (KB) tanah pada keduan lapisan atas dan bawah rata-rata tergolong sedang yaitu (55%) dan (51%). Kadar nitrogen (N-total) tanah lapisan atas sama dengan lapisan bawah rata-rata tergolong rendah (0,18%) dan (0,11%). Kadar fosor (P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>) tergolong sangat rendah, di kedua lapisan atas rata-rata sebesar 5,40 dan 3,10 me/100g. Unsur hara kalium (K<sub>2</sub>O) sangat rendah pada kedua lapisan 5,13 mg/100 gram dan 3,81 mg/100 gram. Parameter yang digunakan untuk menilai status kesuburan tanah yaitu KTK, KB, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> yang diesktrak dengan HCl 25%, sedangkan K<sub>2</sub>O diekstrak dengan HCl 25% dan C-organik tanah.
