Due to the effects of climate change on the sea levels and on the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, many coastal defense structures are expected to be exposed to increased loads with respect to their design conditions in the near future and need to be upgraded. Often, several design alternatives are available, and the identification of the ideal solution is not straightforward. Solutions that are effective in reducing overtopping and ensuring hydraulic safety may reduce or compromise the structural performance. Solutions that are both hydraulically and structurally effective may be extremely expensive and/or environmentally harmful. Using consolidated techniques of Multi-criteria analysis, this contribution proposes a simple methodology to consistently compare and rank the performance of several alternative approaches to upgrade existing structures, and to individuate the best solution. The proposed methodology consists of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of alternative solutions of upgrades, considering the reduction in the wave overtopping discharge (q) and the wave forces (F) by limiting costs and environmental impact. The definition of the KPIs was developed on the basis of new experimental data of q and F at dikes with crown walls and parapets, but it can be applied to various structure types, sea levels, and wave conditions. The application of the KPIs to the new experiments prompts a few conclusions of practical utility concerning the effectiveness of berms, crown walls, and parapets as elements to upgrade existing dikes.

Abstract Key Performance Indicators help an organisation to improve productivity and to evaluate its success. Improved productivity is an essential part of increasing the value-added services that companies can offer to clients and hence their competitiveness. By using Key Performance Indicators, a company can establish baseline figures against a number of important areas. They can be considered like a health check on a company or a diagnosis of where a company can improve its performance. The definition of what they are and how they are measured does not change often, but Key Performance Indicators may change as the organisation's goals change. In this paper we present and discuss the way to establish Key Performance Indicators to evaluate the production effectiveness of garment companies. The KPIs are being tested in several garment companies in Albania and actually implemented in 25 companies.

Background: In recent decades, in the field of healthcare, awareness of the problems inherent to the quality has steadily increased. Currently, the evaluation of healthcare activities is one of the ways in which health systems regulate internal relationships and define strategic decisions. Objective: The study aims to describe in detail the entire process of developing a group of Key Performance Indicators for monitoring and implementing the management of litigation due to medical liability. Particularly, the objective is to centralize and standardize the indicators to provide scientifically reliable data on claims management to hospital professionals responsible for strategic choices. Methods: The study was conducted to analyze data relating to the claims management at Umberto I General Hospital in Rome from 2012 to 2018. All claims reported were classified according to a selection of the categories coded in the International Classification for Patient Safety system, the economic features, and the chronological references of the main management extrajudicial and judicial phases. The Process Analysis Method was followed to develop significant indicators for measuring the performance and the quality of claims management. Results and Conclusion: The results obtained demonstrate how the assessment of performance in claims management can potentially lead to greater risk control with significant repercussions in terms of reduction of disputes, speed in settling claims, reduction of management times, planning of loss prevention measures, and implementation of quality of care.

Smart and sustainable cities are expected to form a cornerstone for achieving resource efficiency and sustainability worldwide. In this specific study we introduce a holistic framework for determining a repository of key performance indicators (KPIs) that are able to evaluate both business-as-usual and novel technologies and services related to smart city solutions. The framework includes six steps: (a) Clustering of the technology/service solutions into groups called Transition Tracks; (b) definition of the main groups of stakeholders; (c) definition of KPIs dimensions (or domains); (d) definition of KPIs repository per dimension; (e) definition of the scope of evaluation per KPI; and (f) threshold definition per KPI. The implementation of the proposed framework led to the development of a repository of 75 KPIs categorized in six dimensions (technical, environmental, economic, social, ICT and legal KPIs) with the corresponding levels of assessment and stakeholders’ group of interest. The proposed repository can serve as a great basis for similar projects to monitor and evaluate the performance of their solutions. Tips and guidance based on the actual implementation and lessons learned from a smart city project are provided.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), now applied widely in the global construction market, are more complex than conventional public procurements in economic, social, political, legal, and administrative aspects. Therefore, in order to ensure good performance and subsequent success of project, PPPs require a well-formulated performance management system that takes into consideration the perspectives of all stakeholders involved. A general agreement on how to measure success is necessary, which may be achieved by the definition of Performance Objectives (POs) of the project. Further statistical evidence, often labelled Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), may be employed to ensure that the actual progress is at par with the targeted. Determination of appropriate POs and KPIs is important for successful performance management. Numerous studies have been conducted worldwide to identify a desirable set of POs and KPIs in PPPs.

The article analyses the following issues: 1) Definitions of benchmarking. Benchmarking as a management tool that has long been succefully used both in the private and public sectors to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of products and processes; 2) Benefits of transport benchmarking. Benchmarking can help transport enterprise to: locate its strengths, pinpoint weaknesses, measure its performance against its competitors, discover what it is possible to achieve; 3) Different types of benchmarking. Different types of benchmarking processes can be distinguished into performance benchmarking, process benchmarking, strategic benchmarking, competitor benchmarking, functional benchmarking, generic benchmarking; 4) Transport benchmarking methodology. The basic transport benchmarking principles ‐ planning, analysis, integration, action and recycle are equally valid for transport policy benchmarking; 5) Key performance indicators in a transport sector.

The subject of the study is the process of preparing applicants for higher education in the context of assessing its effectiveness. The purpose of the study is to develop a balanced system of non-financial indicators suitable for analyzing the costs of training applicants for higher education. Method or methodology of the work.General scientific methods (scientific abstraction, comparison, analysis, synthesis, generalization) and a specific method of key performance indicators (KPI). The results. The article describes modern approaches to understanding the phenomenon of nonfinancial indicators applied to the education system effectiveness analysis in Ukraine, in particular it deals with the issues of the higher education applicants training effectiveness. The key elements of the strategic goals of educational institutions are considered. Author reveals basic stages of non-financial indicators balanced system formation including formation of strategy, determination of the most important factors of success, definition of efficiency indicators system, which corresponds to the needs and opportunities of the institution of higher education. The main risks and peculiarities of the implementation of non-financial indicators are investigated. An indicative list of key performance indicators is proposed, which can become the basis for effective monitoring of the cost effectiveness of training for higher education. Scope of the results: for development of a strategy for managing higher education at the macro and micro levels by state and regional authorities. Conclusions. The method of key performance indicators is acceptable for analyzing the cost-effectiveness of training applicants for higher education. Existing methodological approaches allow to develop a system of efficiency analysis both at the macro level (analysis of the entire higher school) and at the level of individual institutions. Using developed system of indicators, it is possible to go beyond the naive quantitative assessment of indicators and to achieve a real assessment of the return on state investment in training.
