The purpose of the current study was to assess the allocative, technical, and economic efficiency of wheat crop produced in Punjab. Primary data were collected through a well-structured questionnaire. The economic efficiencies were estimated by the DEA technique using the farm level data gathered from 240 wheat growers of the Rajanpur district of Punjab, Pakistan. According to the results of the study the estimated efficiencies results show that the mean technical efficiency of the wheat crop is about 70%, the mean allocative efficiency is 74%, and the mean cost efficiency is 52%. The findings revealed that Pakistani wheat farms could minimize production costs by up to 30% to ensure the same level of production, using resources in optimal proportions and increasing technical efficiency. The findings also reveal that the current level of wheat production can be amplified by up to 30% by mollifying the technical efficiency of wheat crop.

The present study aims to estimate the possible effects of credit on production of wheat crop in Chakwal. The research was based on primary data gathered from 120 farmers, selected by using random sampling technique belonging to two tehsils i.e. Talagang and Chakwal. SFA (Stochastic Frontier Analysis) model was adapted to analyze the data and the results show the mean technical efficiency of the wheat crop was 82 percent for borrowers and 76 percent for non-borrowers. The results proposed that the technical efficiency of wheat growers can be increased by increasing loan disbursement in the area.

The main objective of this study was to measure and analyzes economic efficiency of crop production in North Kordofan State. Secondary objectives included: estimate technical, allocative and economic efficiency and construct efficiency profile determination and the effect of socio-economic factors behind inefficiency. Primary data was collected by a structured questionnaire following stratified random sampling technique from 205 farmers, while secondary data was collected form relevant Institutional sources. The stochastic frontier production and cost function model analysis was used to estimate the technical, allocative and economic efficiency of producing crops. The predicted technical efficiency and economic efficiency are the basis for estimating allocative efficiency of farm. Results indicated that the mean technical efficiency of sorghum, millet, groundnuts and sesame were 0.57, 0.73, 0.53 and 0.74, respectively. The mean allocative efficiency of sorghum, millet, groundnuts and sesame production were 0.84, 0.83, 0.92 and 0.90, respectively. The mean economic efficiency of sorghum, millet, groundnut and sesame were 0.48, 0.62, 0.49 and 0.67, respectively. Farmers who have credit access are more technically efficient than those who have no credit access.

The study investigated the technical, Allocative and economics efficiencies of yam producers in Ganye Local government Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Combinations of purposive and random sampling techniques were employed using 100 famers from five different wards of the local government. In the first place, five wards were selected and used for this study and twenty farmers were selected from each ward, making a total of 100 famers, twenty. The analytical tool used to achieve the objectives of this study was Data Envelopment Analysis. The results of the study revealed that 57% of the farmers had technical efficiency of 0.81 and above while 43% of the farmers operate at less than 0.81 efficiency level. The mean technical efficiency for the 100 sampled farmers in the study area was 0.78. The farmer with the best practice has a technical efficiency of 1.00 while 0.37 is for the least efficient farmers. This implies that on the average, output fall by 0% from the maximum possible level of 1.00 due to technical inefficiency. The mean allocative efficiency was 0.98. The result indicates that average yam farmer in the state would enjoy cost saving of about 5% while allocative inefficient farmer will have an efficiency gain of 95% to attain the level of most efficient farmer among the respondents. The mean economic efficiency was 0.77. The farmer with the best practice has an economic efficiency of 1.0 while 0.08 was for the least efficient farmers. This implies that on the average, output fall by 52% from the maximum possible level due to inefficiency. Finally, among the constraints identified in the study area, the majority of the respondent attested to the fact that high cost of inputs, transportation problem, lack of credit facilities and storage/preservation problem were the major constraints they faced in yam production in the area. The study concludes that yam farmers in the study area have achieved absolute efficiency in the use of variable inputs. It was found that yam production in the study area is profitable.

AbstractBackground: There is strong evidence that clinical outcomes are improved for stroke patients admitted to specialized Stroke Units. The Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) created a Neurovascular Unit (NVU) using resources from General Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Neurosurgery for patients with stroke and acute neurovascular conditions. Under resource-constrained conditions, the operational and economic impacts of the Neurovascular Unit were unknown. Methods: Retrospective patient-level data was studied from two years prior and one year post NVU implementation. Descriptive statistical analysis and non-parametric testing were conducted on the acute length of stay (LOS), alternate level of care LOS, total cost per bed-day and per visit, and patient flow within each medical service and hospital wide. Results: The median acute LOS per hospitalization for NVU-eligible patients decreased significantly (p=0.001). For Neurology patients, mean acute LOS decreased from 9.1 days pre-Neurovascular Unit to 7.6 days post and median acute LOS decreased from 6 to 5 days (p=0.002); however, mean alternate level of care LOS per visit more than doubled (from 1.6 to 4.1 days, p=0.001). For the Neurology service, the mean cost per visit decreased by $945, representing a 5% reduction (p=0.042) and the mean cost per bed-day decreased by $233, or 12.5% (p=0.026). Hospital wide, a saving of over C$450 000 was achieved. Conclusions: During the first year of operation, the NVU at TWH achieved decreased acute LOS per visit and lowered the total hospitalization cost per year for NVU-eligible patients. Addressing the issue of increased alternate level of care LOS could result in additional efficiencies.

<p><em>The board objective of study is to evaluate the profitability and technical efficiency of shallot farming in Bantul and Nganjuk regency. The specific objectives are to (1) Evaluate the profitability of shallot farmers in the study area and (2) Determine the levefl of technical efficiency of shallot farmers. The primary data used for the study obtained using structured questionnaire administered to 60 selected farmers. Gross margin, net farm income, gross ratio, operation ratio, return on capital invested, and stochastic frontier production function were used to analyze the data. The study showed that (1) shallot farming in Bantul and Nganjuk regency was profitable with net income Rp 20.903.711,00/ha and Rp 35.294.540,00/ha, (2) the distribution of the technical efficiency indices revealed that the most of the farmers were technically efficient with mean TE Index of 0.802 (Bantul) and 0,929 (Nganjuk), (3) the result of the inefficiency model showed that years of education (Bantul) and age (Nganjuk) significantly increased the farmers technical efficiency.     </em></p><p> </p><p><em>Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi profitabilitas dan efisiensi teknis usahatani bawang merah di Kabupaten Bantul dan Kabupaten Nganjuk. Secara spesifik, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui profitabilitas usahatani bawang merah di lokasi penelitian dan (2) mengetahui tingkat efisiensi teknis petani bawang merah. Penelitian ini mengggunakan data primer hasil survey pada 60 petani responden dengan menggunakan kuisioner yang telah dirancang sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian. Gross margin, net farm income, gross ratio, operation ratio, return on capital invested, dan fungsi produksi frontier stokastik digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) usahatani bawang merah di Kaupaten Bantul dan Kabupaten Nganjuk menguntungkan untuk dijalankan dengan net income Rp 20.903.711,00/ha and Rp 35.294.540,00/ha, (2) distribusi tingkat efisiensi teknis menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas petani telah mencapai tingkat yang efisien dengan rata-rata TE Index 0,802 (Bantul) dan 0,929 (Nganjuk), (3) hasil analisis model in-efisiensi menunjukkan bahwa tingkat pendidikan (Bantul) and umur (Nganjuk) berpengaruh signifikan terhadap peningkatan efisiensi teknis petani.</em></p>

Abstract. This study analyzes the determinants of rice consumption preference for local or imported type in Delta State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to identify the socio-economic characteristics of rice consumers, ascertain the forms rice is prepared and consumed by respondents, examine the factors influencing rice consumption preference, and identify reasons for household’s preference for local or imported rice consumption in the study area. Primary data were collected from households using a structured questionnaire. The multistage procedure was used to select 200 respondents for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The result revealed that 69% of female were more involved in rice consumption preference than their male counterparts. The mean age was 42 years and the respondents can read and write. About 56.4% were married and the average household size was seven persons. The average monthly income of respondents was N 22372.50 (62.84 USD). The results also show that 44% of households preferred their rice being consumed as white rice and stew. The major reasons for the choice in rice type were because of its availability, cleanliness, taste and swelling capacity. The factors that influence rice consumption pattern were gender, age, price per kg of rice, household size, educational level and income level. It is recommended that the farmers should be encouraged to process their grains in a manner that they will be clean.

This study measured the technical, allocative and economic efficiencies of maize production in the central rift valley of Ethiopia using cross sectional data collected from randomly selected 138 sample households. The estimated result showed that the mean technical, allocative and economic efficiencies were 84.87%, 37.47% and 31.62% respectively. Among factors hypothesized to determine the level of efficiency scores, education was found to determine allocative and economic efficiencies of farmers positively while the frequency of extension contact had a positive relationship with technical efficiency and it was negatively related to both allocative and economic efficiencies. Credit was also found to influence technical and economic efficiencies positively and distance to market affected technical efficiency negatively. The model output also indicated that soil fertility was among significant variables in determining technical efficiency in the study area. The study examined the economic analysis of yam processing into yam flour in Saki Agro ecological Zone of Oyo State. It specifically described the profitability of yam processing; examined the technical efficiency of yam processors and determined the effect of the socio-economic characteristics on technical efficiency. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, profitability and budgetary analysis as well as stochastic frontier model and Garrett scale. The study reveals that majority of the respondents were female (88%) with a mean age of 47. The result shows that the rate of return on investment was 12 percent. The mean technical efficiency of the processors was 85% indicating that the yam processors were relatively efficient in allocating their limited resources. Some observable variables relating to socioeconomic characteristics such as processing experience and sex of the respondents significantly explains the variation in technical efficiency. Factors such as high cost of yam tubers, poor weather condition and inadequate processing facilities are the major factors that hinder the processing activities in the study area. The study therefore recommends that government policies should be made to improve the provision of inputs such as yam tubers and capital equipment at affordable price.

Technical efficiency for cotton growers is examined using both stochastic (SFA) and nonstochastic (DEA) production function approaches. The empirical application uses farm-level data from four counties in west Texas. While efficiency scores for the individual farms differed between SFA and DEA, the mean efficiency scores are invariant of the method of estimation under the assumption of constant returns to scale. On average, irrigated farms are 80% and nonirrigated farms are 70% efficient. Findings show that in Texas, the irrigated farms, on average, could reduce their expenditures on other inputs by 10%, and the nonirrigated farms could reduce their expenditures on machinery and labor by 12% and 13%, respectively, while producing the same level of output.

This study investigated the profitability of shrimp value chain. Primary data were obtained using well structured questionnaire from randomly selected 240 shrimp operators (harvesters, processors and marketers). Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to analyze collected data. The result revealed that the mean profit realized was N70,092 N36,255 and N26,097.30 by harvesters, processors and marketers respectively. Value added at was N500 and N1000 per basket by processors and marketers respectively. Test of hypothesis indicates that quantity sold (0.218), price (0.033), bargaining power (0.002) and union dues (0.099), showed positive and significant relationship with shrimp value chain profitability. While market levy and store rent showed negative relationship with profitability in shrimp value chain. It was recommended that there should be moderate store rent. Marketers should increase their bargaining power at the point of procurement and union dues should be reduced so that shrimp value chain profitability can be enhanced.
