Despite a growing body of research into sports coaching there remains little understanding of what it is like to coach elite junior tennis players. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived coaching experience of 8 UK, less experienced tennis coaches and describe what it is like to be a coach of an elite junior tennis player.  An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of 8 less experienced tennis coaches (1 – 4 years-experience) provides a description of how they described elite junior tennis coaching.  This study found that (a) self-employment makes coaching competitive, (b) less experienced coaches were surprised by the nature of parental interactions, and (c) less experienced coaches struggled to cope with the reality of coaching and this triggered disillusionment with coaching.   The findings of this research contribute to an evolving, problematic epistemology of sports coaching and highlight a need for tennis coach education to improve the preparation of new coaches for their initiation into coaching.   The findings present governing bodies opportunities to inform coach education literature and help tennis coaches to sustain themselves in an emotionally challenging role.

“Slippage” occurs when there is a mismatch between the intended message communicated (by coach, parent, or talent development environment) and the received message by junior tennis players.  The concept of slippage has received attention in educational settings, but research has yet to investigate the possible effects on junior tennis players.  The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of 8 UK, elite junior tennis players and describe what it is like to perform in the elite junior context.  An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of 8 elite junior tennis players (playing LTA Grade 2 and upwards) shows their insights into elite junior tennis.  This study found that (a) participants seek meaning behind their tennis experiences and they infer messages from their environment that are not intended, (b) “slippage” is associated with unintentional pressure, and (c) “slippage” is associated with a reduction of junior tennis players’ confidence.  The findings of this research contribute to an evolving, problematic epistemology of sports coaching and confirms that coaches can lose control of their intended message as players infer their own meanings from interactions within tennis.  The findings present governing bodies opportunities to inform coach education literature and consider how the difference between the intended coaching message and the received coaching message can impact the emotional state of junior tennis players.

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of 8 UK, experienced tennis coaches and describe what it is like to coach elite junior tennis players.  An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of 8 experienced tennis coaches (over 10 years-experience) shows their insights into elite junior tennis coaching and provides avenues of comparison with the experiences of younger tennis coaches (Gowling, 2019).  This study found that (a) experienced tennis coaches described a panoramic view of coaching, (b) experienced coaches were confident in their coaching effectiveness, and (c) acceptance of challenges in coaching helped experienced coaches develop effective coping mechanisms to sustain their emotional well-being and motivation to coach for long careers.  The findings of this research contribute to an evolving, problematic epistemology of sports coaching and confirms that the experiences of existing coaches could contribute to more effective training of coaches.  The findings present governing bodies opportunities to inform coach education literature and help tennis coaches to sustain themselves in an emotionally challenging role.

Background: Chronic job insecurity seems to be a prominent feature within elite sport, where coaches work under pressure of dismissals if failing to meet performance expectations of stakeholders. The aim of the current study was to get a deeper understanding of elite football coaches’ experiences of getting fired and how they made sense of that process. Method: A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews was conducted with six elite football coaches who were fired within the same season. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was chosen as framework to analyze the data. Results: The results reflected five emerging themes: Acceptance of having an insecure job, working for an unprofessional organization and management, micro-politics in the organization, unrealistic and changing performance expectation, and emotional responses. Conclusion: All coaches expressed awareness and acceptance regarding the risk of being fired. However, they experienced a lack of transparency and clear feedback regarding the causes of dismissal. This led to negative emotional reactions as the coaches experienced being evaluated by poorly defined expectations and by anonymous stakeholders. Sports organizations as employers should strive to be transparent during dismissal. In addition, job insecurity is a permanent stressor for coaches and should be acknowledged and targeted within coach education.

Coach developers play essential roles in “coaching the coaches,” and investigating their lifelong learning pathway is key for better understanding the mechanisms that lead certain coaches to become coach developers. Thus, the purpose of the paper was to conduct a case study to investigate the lifelong learning pathway of a coach developer operating in a national sport federation. The case investigated is Mille, a certified coach developer in charge of the Brazilian Rugby Federation’s coach education program. Data were collected through the Rappaport Time Line and two semi-structured interviews. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was adopted to explore the lived experiences reported by the participant. The results highlighted that Mille is an individual driven by challenges provided either by external factors (i.e. school, university, work) or by his own choices (i.e. becoming a coach, becoming a coach developer, starting a PhD) for personal and professional development. Specific life events led him to make decisions for evolving in his roles, from athlete, to coach, to coach developer, and to “master trainer,” which is the highest level of certification provided by World Rugby. Practical implications are suggested to contribute to the organization of education initiatives for coach developers through a lifelong learning perspective.

Starting from the principles of ecology and holism, it is described in a manner that relates to tennis. It also elaborates on those aspects we consider to be significant in enabling a junior tennis player to prosper and develop into to his/her full potential.

There are few studies examining coaches’ awareness of their role in developing performance under pressure. This study has explored the application of implicit and explicit learning theory for skill execution under pressure through the understanding of coaches. Seven curling coaches who teach adult novices were interviewed using a semistructured approach. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore their experiences and beliefs around skill acquisition and pressure. Key factors that emerged from the analysis were the coaches’ lack of awareness of their role in developing skill execution under pressure and the importance of coach education in creating that awareness. The recognition of the pressure that players will face in games and the potential for implicit techniques to be employed by the coaches demonstrated positive prospects for the application of implicit/explicit skill acquisition theory. The coaches’ experiences highlighted aspects unique to curling that will need to be considered in progressing the study’s findings. The distinction between skill setup and execution was also raised by coaches and requires further study to identify whether it impacts the effectiveness of building robust skills and the resulting coaching advice. The study provides recommendations for application of the theory and suggestions for future research.

Abstract This study investigated tennis players’ speed before, during and after the split-step, deceleration before and acceleration after the split-step in four different stroke groups in three age categories. Seven male professional, eleven male and ten female junior tennis players were recorded with video cameras at official tournaments. Using the SAGIT system, we gathered data on 8,545 split-steps. Tennis players performed a split-step in 82.9% of cases. A tennis player’s speed, deceleration and acceleration were measured 0.2 s before and after the split-step. Differences between categories and stroke groups for each of the five variables were analyzed with a two-way ANOVA. The differences between the groups of players were generally much higher in the speed before, during and after the split-step than in the deceleration before and acceleration after the split-step. Most of these differences were observed between the various stroke groups. These results suggest that players use three types of movement while performing a split-step. In the first type, which is typical of serving and returning, the speed before, during and after the split-step is lower (0.55 to 1.2 m/s). The second type of movement is characteristic of baseline strokes where tennis players achieve higher speed than in the first type (0.7 to 1.66 m/s). The third type occurs in strokes where a tennis player is moving or already at the net (0.78 to 1.9 m/s). Movement in tennis is an area that requires constant development in terms of designing and upgrading movement patterns, increasing speed and practice in specific game situations.

Tennis has become increasingly popular in recent years but the coaches, focuses on the technique and tactic in the game and less on the issues they involve playing tennis, namely unilateral increase muscle tone which leads to the appearance of scoliotic attitudes. Hypothesis: using specific means of selected, we will improve posture junior tennis players with scoliotic attitude of the spine. Material and method: the study was conducted on a junior tennis player, age11, which participated in the sessions of physical therapy with a frequency of 2-3 times per week. Results and discussion: the patient E.S. was diagnosed with "C" shaped scoliosis. Using the scoliometer we obtained from initial testing a value of 7° and the final value of only 4°. Conclusions: as a result of tests conducted confirmed the hypothesis that it was gone and that therapeutic exercise is imperative necessary to tennis players.

Conditioning preparation plays a key role in tennis. However, conditioning is usually marked by a fairly large training volume. Early identification of youth tennis players with serious emotional disorders is critical for avoiding overtraining. In the present study we investigated the changes in mood states during the preparation period of a top junior tennis player. The Brunel Mood Scale, consisting of 6 subscales with a 5-point rating scale to assess levels of mood states was used at 8 PM each night, and then again the following morning (8 AM). It can be concluded that specific mood factors increase and decrease in accordance with alterations in training intensity and period of the day.
