The learning approach is always being the concern of educators to increase the quality of engineering education. Engineering education is essential in order to nurture quality engineers and prepare the workforce for country development. Coming to Industrial 4.0, modern engineering education has combined ICT technology to meet the demand of Education 4.0. This paper aims to review blended learning to enhanced engineering education using flipped classroom approach. The paper starts with an overview of the current trend of engineering education, which encourages using blended learning approach. Blended learning was developed to overcome the advantages and disadvantages of traditional learning and online learning, which brings a better learning experience to students. From the review, the blended learning using flipped classroom approach have positively assisted students in their learning. Future ongoing research is recommended to explore the potential of flipped classroom approach use in supporting engineering education specifically in the context of Malaysia.

This article explores blended learning strategies within teaching and learning higher education as a channel of addressing learner diversity. Three case studies were critically examined to highlight the efficacy of various blended learning techniques to improve students' learning experience. These blended learning techniques include online peer and staff feedback for formative assessment; online video and audio feedback for summative assessment; and a flipped classroom teaching model. Culturally, educationally, and socially diverse first year student cohorts participated in this study to provide insight into the advantages and disadvantages of each blended learning technique. Data on the effectiveness of these pedagogical and technological innovations were gathered through online surveys to address students' reflection of learning experience. Findings of these case studies are significant in light of the growing diversity found within student cohorts in higher education; as well as an increase in technology-driven teaching innovation and student-centred learning techniques.

For reliable blood pressure measurement, various potential sources of inaccuracies need to be considered to avoid incorrect decision-making. Pharmacy students should be sensitized and taught the skill accordingly. One strategy to teach students’ blood pressure measurement skills might be through a blended learning approach in a flipped classroom-like setting. With a randomized two-arm study among pharmacy students in their eighth semester, the required extent of in-class session in the scope of a blended learning approach in a flipped classroom-like setting was evaluated. Participants’ self-confidence and self-perceived proficiency were evaluated through a survey, and participants’ blood pressure measurement performance was assessed by objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Participants’ satisfaction with, and perception of, the flipped classroom were also surveyed. The extended in-class activities did not result in a significantly higher increase of participants’ OSCE score and self-assessment score when compared to the brief in-class session. Both in-class sessions yielded a significant increase in the OSCE scores as well as in the self-assessment scores. Moreover, the teaching approaches were predominantly well-received by the students. The use of both flipped classroom-like approaches improved pharmacy students’ blood pressure measurement performance, though the brief in-class session was sufficient. Students’ self-confidence/self-perceived proficiency in blood pressure measurement skills increased similarly in both settings.

Blended Learning is a learning model that is enriched with traditional learning methods and online education materials. Integration of face-to-face and online learning with blending learning can enhance the learning experience and optimize seat time. In this chapter, the authors present the teaching of an Algorithm and Programming course in Computer Engineering Education via an artificial intelligence-supported blended learning approach. Since 2011, Computer Engineering education in Suleyman Demirel University Computer Engineering Department is taught with a blended learning method. Blended learning is achieved through a Learning Management System (LMS) by using distance education technology. The LMS is comprised of course materials supported with flash animations, student records, user roles, and evaluation systems such as surveys and quizzes that meet SCORM standards. In this chapter, the related education process has been supported with an intelligent program, which is based on teaching C programming language. In this way, it has been aimed to improve educational processes within the related course and the education approach in the department. The blended learning approach has been evaluated by the authors, and the obtained results show that the introduced artificial intelligence-supported blended learning education program enables both teachers and students to experience better educational processes.

Objective: Evaluation of a blended learning adaptation of the accreditation process for supervisors in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ (RANZCP) Competency-Based Fellowship Program. Method: The adaption of the accreditation process is described, and a mixed-methods approach was taken in its evaluation. Descriptive statistics are presented for participant responses to and engagement with interactive workshop elements. The Wilcoxon signed ranks test was applied to examine the change in participants’ confidence in their understanding of the expectations of a supervisor at the commencement and conclusion of the workshop. Free text evaluative responses were subject to qualitative content analysis. Results: Most participants expressed a preference for the blended learning workshop format and indicated that live polling improved the learning experience. Additionally, participants expressed greater confidence in their understanding of the expectations of the supervisor role following workshop completion. Conclusions: The blended learning approach to supervisor training was preferred by participants and may provide a model to be adopted by other training committees and institutions.

This study aims at investigating the effect of Blended Learning approach compared to the traditional learning approach on fifth grade students’ achievement in My Beautiful Language Textbook and the development of their verbal creative thinking. The study consisted of 49 students among which 25 are males in the Experimental Group and 24 females in the Control Group. The study found a statistical significant difference (α ≤ 0.05) between the mean scores of the two study groups in achievement posttest and verbal creative thinking post application test. The experiment group which was taught using the blended approach of learning outperformed the Control Group in both tests. Thus, learning My Beautiful Language Textbook using the blended approach is more effective than the traditional method in terms of achievement and the development of verbal creative thinking skills. In light of this, the study recommends the adoption of blended approach in learning My Beautiful Language Textbook, the curriculum computerization, holding series of training courses, and workshops for teachers in school districts on how to effectively implement the blended approach.

Summative and formative assessments are important for students' learning pathway. The article analyzes the blended learning model in the Entrepreneurship discipline, in two classes from the perspective of a learning experience as formative assessment, applied in the online platform. The study pointed out that students' access to content increases when participation is stimulated through a formative activity in the online environment. In the class of 54 students, 37 students performed the activity, while in the other class of 76 students, 67 students performed the activity in the online environment.

Software engineering education plays an important role in keeping students educated with software technologies, processes, and practices that are needed by industries. Nevertheless, the nature of software engineering learning activities in traditional classrooms is limited in scope and time, making it more difficult to achieve a proper balance between theory and practice and address industrial demands. This makes scant provision for assisting students in keeping their software engineering knowledge current. To support software engineering education, flipped learning is a suitable strategy. Prior studies have shown that students’ perceptions in flipped learning environments are better than those in traditional learning environments. Nevertheless, in flipped learning, students may not have sufficient ability to conduct learning out of class. Therefore, the flipped learning strategy should aim to meet the needs of students to ensure that they get the appropriate support or feedback during the learning process before the class. The aim of this study was to propose a flipped learning diagnosis approach to promote students’ learning out of class in the flipped classroom. To explore students’ learning performance in software engineering courses, three classes of students were invited to learn with three different learning approaches (traditional learning approach, flipped learning approach, and flipped learning diagnosis approach). The results showed that the students who learned with the flipped learning diagnosis approach outperformed those students who learned with the flipped learning approach or the traditional learning approach.

The article discusses the problem of organizing blended learning in general education organizations. Blended learning, as one of the areas of informatization of education, has been used in foreign countries since the end of the 20th century, and in Russia it has been discussed quite recently. Blended learning has both advantages over traditional learning and possible risks, which include the lack of readiness of teachers to implement an innovative approach to teaching chemistry due to poor awareness of blended learning lesson models and methodological capabilities of electronic educational resources. Separate publications on conducting such chemistry lessons in the absence of generalized methodological recommendations do not allow the teacher to effectively master this technology. The purpose of the study is to develop guidelines that generalize and systematize the experience of organizing blended learning in chemistry lessons. The research methodology is determined: literary search on the problem of organizing blended learning; studying the readiness of chemistry teachers to organize blended learning; development of scripts for chemistry lessons in different blended learning models; preparation of recommendations for chemistry teachers. This article presents the results of a questionnaire survey of chemistry teachers, allowing to determine their readiness for the organization of blended learning. It was found that more than 70% of chemistry teachers know what blended learning is, but prefer to accompany traditional face-to-face learning with electronic resources or use the flipped classroom blended learning model as the most understandable and accessible. The authors confirmed the assumption of the need to develop a generalized model of blended learning lessons, criteria for choosing a model and electronic resources, taking into account the studied content. When choosing electronic resources, the main criterion should be the scientific nature of the studied content, and not the convenience of the user interface. An important criterion is the cross-platform nature of educational resources, as well as the availability of guidelines for the inclusion of the proposed electronic resources in the educational process.

The current program for Mechanical Engineering at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany has more than 1500 students enrolled. Lego Mindstorms’ NXT Robots are fully integrated in the current Engineering Education stream to help students practically apply theoretical concepts. The courses Communication and Organizational Development (KOE) and Computer Science in Mechanical Engineering 1 (INFO1), provided by the interdisciplinary institute cluster IMA/ZLW, follow a newly-designed “blended learning” approach. This institute cluster is composed of the Institute of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering (IMA) and the Center for Learning and Knowledge Management (ZLW). These institutes are currently within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Two years ago, the course KOE was redesigned and redirected towards a “Flipped Classroom” concept by initiating online lectures and a discussion class. Thus, the tutorial class ROBOFLEX as part of the KOE curriculum is introduced. ROBOFLEX is a two-stage business simulation that enables students to experience realistic virtual communication within computer science and engineering disciplines. Students are divided into groups of about thirty people, and become entrepreneurs and founders of start-ups that specialize in the production of innovative robots for the automotive industry. They create these robots using Lego Mindstorms’ NXT. Since its conception, the course INFO1 has been accompanied by a lab component, where students apply the concepts taught in class in a team-focused software design project. In 2011, the lab concept was changed into a two-stage robotics programming project based on Lego Mindstorms’ NXT Robots and the Java programming language. In the first stage, students practice the fundamental programming concepts that are presented in the lecture by completing a series of exercises in a self-paced manner. The second stage focuses on applied problem-solving. In this stage, pairs of students apply the previously-learned programming concepts to program a “pick-and-place” robot that is equipped with various sensors. The integration of Lego Mindstorms’ NXT Robots into these courses also join the concepts of the two described courses. While KOE delivers organizational and communicational skills, INFO1 provides technical and domain-specific skills. Here, the robots represent the connecting element. The problem-based second stage of INFO1 benefits from the skills that are taught in KOE. Because INFO1 is scheduled in the term following the KOE, it offers a direct opportunity for students to transfer the KOE skill set from the lecture where it was taught into a new context that is primarily concerned with a different subject. Both classes have been evaluated and developed independently in the past. Since last year’s introduction of ROBOFLEX in KOE, synergies between both lectures are becoming a main component of their further developments. In this paper the recent developments in both courses will be compared and discussed. Specific measurable effects concerning learning capability, motivation and learning endurance are being portrayed by using blended learning approaches.
