When Austrian composer Alban Berg was working on his opera Lulu, he wrote three Baudelaire songs as a Konzertaria entitled Der Wein. Premiered in 1930, Der Wein is a large-scale work for voice and orchestra. Berg uses a German translation by Stefan George, but the published score is in parallel texts, accommodating the French verse line. The chapter also considers a ‘hidden’ Baudelaire setting from Berg’s 1926 Lyric Suite for string quartet. The analysis covers: (a) the context of composition; (b) the connections established between selected poems; (c) the statistical data generated from the adhesion strength tests; and (d) how the data shape an evaluation of Berg’s settings of Baudelaire. Evidence suggests that Berg’s settings of Baudelaire are loosely entangled; the highly prescriptive score affects syntax, semantics, and prosody. Yet, because Der Wein has stood the test of time, the settings are deemed loosely accretive.

Organiste-titulaire of Notre-Dame de Paris for nearly forty years, Louis Vierne composed over sixty songs, including a set of five Baudelaire songs, Cinq Poèmes de Baudelaire, published in 1921. This analysis covers: (a) the context of composition; (b) the connections established between selected poems; (c) the statistical data generated from the adhesion strength tests; and (d) how the data shape an evaluation of Vierne’s settings of Baudelaire. Findings reveal how the poetic line is minimally disrupted in these songs, as the vocal line remains very independent of the piano. As a result, the bonds between poem and music are largely abhesive, which means it is possible to recover the poem intact from the song score. As complex mélodies, the lack of interference with the fabric of Baudelaire’s versification, together with limited musical-semantic interpretation, means that Vierne’s music remains attentive towards Baudelaire’s poetic vision, offering an accretive outcome overall.

The paper aims to determine, through experiments, the necessary force for detaching the deposited layer (SD) from the support layer (SB). The thermal sprayed coating was formed by successive deposition of two sub-layers, one for anchorage and the second for corrosion resistance. Shear adhesion strength tests were performed on a specialized stand, while force (Fad) and displacement (x) values were recorded with a data acquisition system. The variation curves, Fad = f (x), outline the evolution of the detachment process of the sprayed layer and the two main components of the deformation process: slip and breakage.

The article presents the results of studies of adhesive, strength and tribotechnical properties of composite polycaproamide polymer materials and coatings based on them for mechanical engineering purposes. It has been established that the relative change in the adhesion strength depends on the degree of filling in air and in argon has an extreme character passing through a maximum for coatings based on PCA with aluminum oxide, and for coatings made of PCA with copper oxide, it has a complex character. The formation of adhesive, strength, and tribotechnical properties of filled polycaproamide coatings was also studied. At the same time, it was found that by adjusting the temperature-time technological modes, it is possible to increase the adhesive, strength, and tribotechnical characteristics of composite polycaproamide coatings for machine-building purposes.

Known for his 1900 opera, Louise, Gustave Charpentier also published seven Baudelaire songs: four as a set called Les Fleurs du mal; three alongside settings of other poets in Poèmes chantés, a collection of sixteen songs. Charpentier’s Baudelaire songs stand out, and challenge their status as melodies, for their use of refrains for female mini-chorus. The analysis covers: the context of composition; the connections established between selected poems; the statistical data generated from the adhesion strength tests; and how the data shape an evaluation of Charpentier’s settings of Baudelaire. The findings reveal highly intermingled bonds between poem and music. Despite this close connection, the songs themselves are not always stable, creating an uncertain (sometimes dilutive, sometimes accretive) outcome. This indicates a composer attempting to develop new text-setting techniques, alongside an expansive aesthetic agenda informed by a social conscience, as he sought to open up musique savante to wider audiences.

In this article the various methods of assessment of gas-thermal coating’s adhesion strength are considered. The methodology of carrying out the strength tests, using traditional methods of quantitative assessment of adhesive strength of a coating towards its basement, is reflected; the advantages and disadvantages of the represented methods are given. In the article, the theoretical justification of the mechanics of adhesive avulsion is given, and the imperfection of conic pins’ usage is shown. Aiming at increasing of the accuracy and quality of the strength tests of gas-thermal coatings, a modernised methodology, as well as the samples (а.с.1436025), related to detection of the adhesion strength, are suggested. The theoretical computation of the reasonableness of usage of ring cross section of the coating, resulted in the event of usage of the offered sample, is given. On the basis of theoretical computation, a defining formula of the adhesive strength is conducted. Comparison tests of adhesion strength with various sample’s designs are completed. The reasonableness and effectiveness of usage of the offered methodology in assessment of gas-thermal coating’s adhesion strength are proven.

This work is a continuation of the publication [1], in which the torsional strength tests of samples made of polymer materials, loaded with torsional moment, which more and more often can be made with the use of incremental technologies, were carried out. The designed proprietary test stand, which was described in the publication [1], was used. A series of preliminary studies on the torsion of fittings with spline connections obtained using additive techniques were carried out. It was found, that a additive technologies have a clear impact on the torsional strength of the tested machine components, including the placement of the prototype relative to the 3D printing plane or the method of processing polymer material.

After training at the Moscow Conservatory, Alexander Gretchaninov studied composition under Rimsky-Korsakov in St Petersburg, where he developed his vocal writing technique. In 1911, he published a set of five Baudelaire songs entitled Les Fleurs du mal. They are printed in parallel text, with the French alongside a Russian translation, and include a motif recurring across the set. The analysis covers: (a) the context of composition; (b) the connections established between selected poems; (c) the statistical data generated from the adhesion strength tests; and (d) how the data shape an evaluation of Gretchaninov’s settings of Baudelaire. Analysis reveals that the songs are highly entangled through the way Gretchaninov deforms the fabric of Baudelaire’s verse. Yet the songs are also accretive, because the flexible approach to text-setting enables Gretchaninov to respond to emotive aspects of the poem. These are songs whose complexity suggests that they were designed for highly trained musicians.

Poet, musician, and Chat noir cabaret artist Maurice Rollinat set Baudelaire to music a number of times during the 1880s. This chapter analyses two key sets of songs published in 1892: Six Poésies de Baudelaire and Six Nouvelles Poésies de Baudelaire. The analysis covers: (a) the context of composition; (b) the connections established between selected poems; (c) the statistical data generated from the adhesion strength tests; and (d) how the data shapes an evaluation of Rollinat’s settings of Baudelaire. The chapter concludes by suggesting that the settings are neither particularly disruptive nor especially cohesive (adhesion strength: loosely intermingled). A relatively high proportion of unexpected accentual stresses in the poetic line is mitigated by regular phrase lengths and breathing spaces. Rollinat’s settings demand a free approach to interpreting the printed score to achieve an accretive song; if the score is followed to the letter, it may create a dilutive song.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to establish which of seven factors influence the adhesion strength and hence bacterial transfer between biofilms containing Listeria monocytogenes (pure and two-species biofilms) and tryptone soya agar (TSA) as a solid organic surface. The two-species biofilms were made of L. monocytogenes and one of the following species of bacteria: the nonpathogenic organisms Kocuria varians, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Staphylococcus sciuri and CCL 63, an unidentified gram-negative bacterium isolated from the processing plant environment. We used biofilms prepared under conditions simulating open surfaces in meat-processing sites. The biofilm's adhesion strength and population were evaluated by making 12 contacts on a given whole biofilm (4.5 cm2), using a new slice of a sterilized TSA cylinder for each contact, and plotting the logarithm CFU · cm−2 detached by each contact against the contact number. Three types of detachment kinetics were observed: biphasic kinetics, where the first slope may be either positive or negative, and monophasic kinetics. The bacteria that resisted a chlorinated alkaline product and a glutaraldehyde- and quaternary ammonium-based disinfectant had greater adhesion strengths than those determined for untreated biofilms. One of the four non-Listeria strains studied, Kocuria varians CCL 56, favored both the attachment and detachment of L. monocytogenes. The stainless steel had smaller bacterial populations than polymer materials, and non-Listeria bacteria adhered to it less strongly. Our results helped to evaluate measures aimed at controlling the immediate risk, linked to the presence of a large number of CFU in a foodstuff, and the delayed risk, linked to the persistence of L. monocytogenes and the occurrence of slightly contaminated foods that may become dangerous if L. monocytogenes multiplies during storage. Cleaning and disinfection reduce the immediate risk, while reducing the delayed risk should be achieved by lowering the adhesion strength, which the sanitizers used here cannot do at low concentrations.
