Glass ionomer cements and resin-based composites are promising materials in restorative dentistry. However, their limited mechanical properties and the risk of bulk/marginal fracture compromise their lifespan. Intensive research has been conducted to understand and develop new materials that can mimic the functional behavior of the oral cavity. Nanotechnological approaches have emerged to treat oral infections and become a part of scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Carbon nanotubes are promising materials to create multifunctional platforms for dental applications. This review provides a comprehensive survey of and information on the status of this state-of-the-art technology and describes the development of glass ionomers reinforced with carbon nanotubes possessing improved mechanical properties. The applications of carbon nanotubes in drug delivery and tissue engineering for healing infections and lesions of the oral cavity are also described. The review concludes with a summary of the current status and presents a vision of future applications of carbon nanotubes in the practice of dentistry.

Jatropha neopauciflora is an endemic species of Mexico. Its latex is used to treat wounds, scarring, oral infections, and loose teeth. To date, there are no studies that validate at a morphological level a wound-healing use in diabetes. The present research aimed to evaluate the wound-healing capacity of the latex of J. neopauciflora in the skin of healthy and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. Also, a chemical analysis of the latex through molecular exclusion chromatography and HPLC were performed. Male mice ( Mus musculus) of 7-week-old CD1 strain were used. Groups of healthy and diabetic mice were formed. A longitudinal cut of 1 cm was performed on the depilated skin. All treatments were topically applied to the wound area twice a day for ten days. At the end of the experiments, the skin sections were obtained from the wound area and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. Then we counted the number of active fibroblasts in all the experimental groups. In normal mice, the latex accelerated the wound-healing process and decreased the number of active fibroblasts, similarly to Recoveron. In diabetic mice, the latex and Recoveron increased the number of active fibroblasts. In normal and diabetic mice, a thin and orderly epidermis was observed. Molecular exclusion chromatography exhibited 58 fractions, 14 of which were subjected to HPLC, to detect catechin, a flavonoid with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. J. neopauciflora latex can be useful for wound treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus because it accelerates and promotes the wound-healing process.

Abstract Background US dentists prescribe 10% of outpatient antibiotics. However, assessing the appropriateness of dental antibiotic prescribing has been challenging due to a lack of guidelines for common infections. In 2019, the American Dental Association proposed clinical practice guidelines (CPG) on the management of common acute oral infections for the first time. Our objective was to describe national baseline antibiotic prescribing for the treatment of irreversible pulpitis, apical periodontitis, and acute apical abscess prior to the release of the proposed CPG. Methods We performed a cross-sectional analysis of national VA data from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. We identified cases of irreversible pulpitis, apical periodontitis, and acute apical abscess using ICD-10-CM codes. Patient demographics, facility location, medical conditions, dental procedure codes (“CDTs”), and diagnostic (ICD-10-CM) codes were extracted from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse. Antibiotics prescribed by a dentist within 7 days of a visit were included. Multivariable logistic regression identified variables associated with antibiotic prescribing for each infection. Results Of the 470,039 VA dental visits with oral infections coded, 25% of irreversible pulpitis, 41% of apical periodontitis, and 61% of acute apical abscess visits received antibiotics. Amoxicillin was prescribed most frequently. Although the median days’ supply was 7 days, prolonged use of antibiotics was frequent (9.2% of irreversible pulpitis, 17.8% of apical periodontitis, 28.7% of acute apical abscess received antibiotics for ≥8 days). Of the irreversible pulpitis visits with antibiotics prescribed, 20.0% received ≥2 antibiotics. Patients with high-risk cardiac conditions, prosthetic joints, and certain dental procedures were associated with receipt of antibiotics (table). Conclusion Prior to the release of the ADA guidelines, 75.8% and 59.4% of irreversible pulpitis and apical periodontitis were concordant with proposed recommendations. These data identify opportunities to improve prescribing and serve as a benchmark for future outpatient antimicrobial stewardship efforts. The predictive role of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), number of tooth extractions, and oral infections for mortality in people with and without diabetes is unclear. This prospective cohort study is a 12 1/2-year follow-up of the Oslo II study, a health survey in 2000. In all, 12,764 men were invited. Health information was retrieved from 6434 elderly men through questionnaire information, serum measurements, and anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Diabetes was reported by 425 men. Distinct differences were observed in baseline characteristics in individuals with and without diabetes. In the diabetes group, age and hs-CRP were statistically significant whereas in the nondiabetes group, age, hs-CRP, number of tooth extractions, tooth extractions for infections and oral infections combined, nonfasting glucose, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, regular alcohol drinking, daily smoking, and level of education were independent risk factors. The number of tooth extractions <5 was inversely related whereas more extractions increased the risk. Multivariate analyses showed that hs-CRP was a significant predictor in persons with diabetes and tooth extractions and oral infections combined; the number of teeth extracted and hs-CRP were for persons without diabetes. Infection and inflammation were associated with mortality in individuals both with and without diabetes.

Oral diseases are among the most prevalent diseases affecting global health. In his report on the crisis in oral disease in America, the Surgeon General warned that one cannot be truly healthy without oral health. Oral health means freedom from all oral health problems; tooth decay (dental caries), periodontal diseases, tooth loss, oral-facial pain, oral cancer and the effects of its treatment, oral infections, craniofacial birth defects and more. The relationships between oral conditions and systemic health and disease are many and synergistic, and most involve dietary and/or systemic nutritional factors. Diet and nutrition can play important roles in the etiology, prevention, and/or management of oral conditions, as they do in overall health and disease. Today, all health professionals and educators need to be aware of and consider oral issues and their possible diet/nutritional implications as a component of optimal health care and education. This review article provides a brief overview of how diet and nutrition impact and are impacted by oral conditions, and offers general guidelines and resources for providing meaningful interventions throughout the life cycle.
