The study is based on research conducted on work-integrated learning (WIL), also known as teaching practice during the online enrichment and intervention programme for final-year student teachers at a tertiary institution in Johannesburg. This programme was conducted from 2016 and modified in 2020 to enhance and improve the History methodology student teachers’ Pedagogic Knowledge and Pedagogic Content Knowledge (PCK), during the Corona virus pandemic using different online tools. Former students of the institution who are now teachers, school learners and a psychologist participated in the process of enhancing the student-teachers’ WIL. The purpose of the study was to explore the effectiveness of the online enrichment intervention programme in providing History student teachers with necessary teaching skills and to ensure readiness for WIL during the Covid -19 period. The main research question was: “To what extent can the online enrichment intervention programmes for student-teachers improve and enhance teaching practice before and during WIL in the context of covid-19?” Qualitative research methods of observation, interviews and document analysis were used with a sample of 90 Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and 4th year Bachelor of Education (BEd) students. The findings indicated that the online enrichment intervention programme improved student-teachers’ confidence, emotional readiness before and during WIL and the unfavourable circumstances in their classrooms. Student-teachers reported better understanding of the need for proactive planning for any circumstance or situation. Despite the constraints imposed by the pandemic, they observed changes in their conceptualisation of teaching, improvement in their interaction with learners, in classroom management, in their ability to implement different teaching strategies, resources and assessment tasks.

Mentors are expected to create an environment in which prospective employees can be trained to be productive and be able to excel when employed. The personal one-on-one mentoring is especially beneficial for potential employees, such as student teachers, to close the gap between theory they are exposed to at higher education institutions (HEIs) and teaching practice in schools. Motivated school mentors are expected to provide student teachers with work- integrated learning (WIL) skills of a high standard, particularly since these mentors are expected to be models of professionalism for the student teachers to emulate.The aim of the study was to investigate whether the one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualification at HEIs adequately develops the WIL skills of student teachers. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to ascertain the relationship between the theoretical knowledge provided by the PGCE curriculum and the development of WIL skills of student teachers in the schools and to determine the perceptions of school mentors of the PGCE to develop the WIL skills of student teachers. The target population for this quantitative study was school mentors of PGCE student teachers. Data were obtained by means of a structured questionnaire for the mentors. It was evident in this study that mentors were well-trained to develop the WIL skills of their prot. The findings of this research, therefore, support the hypothesis that school mentors make a significant contribution to the development of the WIL skills of student teachers in the PGCE programme.

As Higher Education increasingly moving towards a plethora of blended and fully online learning, questions are raised around the space and place of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). This chapter reports on one institution's efforts to design and deliver a WIL course in a Teacher Education program adopting an open and distributed framework. The redesigned course, Orientation to Teaching, was a first year course in a Bachelor of Education (Primary) program at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. The redesign of the course was underpinned by a Distributed Open Collaborative Course (DOCC) design and as the workplace also became the site of learning, the theory of effective WIL curriculum (Orrell, 2011) also informed the design. This chapter examines the complexity of DOCC design in WIL contexts and uses Khan's 8 dimensions to frame the discussion.

The current study sought to explore the experiences of pre-service student teachers in a teaching unit in VR within a special course framework which was intended to enhance student-teacher's 21st century skills and growth processes. In particular, how their experiences working with VR affected their self-efficacy. The research population comprised of 176 students studying in their second of a four years training course to become teachers in the K-12 educational system. The main research question was: Do teaching approaches employing VR effect student teachers’ self-efficacy, interests, and creativity? If so, what are these effects? How does collaboration in VR classroom foster learners’ social integration? The main findings of this study showed that using VR learning environments with student teachers helped them increase their self-efficacy and allowed them to be more innovative and creative. VR challenges learners with active teaching and learning, making student teachers active participants who create and innovate.

In the opinion of authors involved in studies on teacher education, teaching practice is an essential period of professional development (Hormenu et al., 2014; Hussain et al., 2013; Kirbulut & Bektas, 2011) and personality transformation (Schoeman & Mabunda, 2012) that enables student teachers to develop their professional and classroom identity as well as strengthening knowledge of theory and practice (Lakateb, 2016; Morales Cortés, 2016). Therefore, an analysis of the experience gained during each practice, as well as its dynamics, is undoubtedly useful in developing an active response to the difficulties faced by the student teachers and in adjusting the training process in a way that convinces them they are sufficiently prepared to overcome these difficulties. This study is an analysis of the difficulties faced by prospective teachers of psychology during their teaching practice and the dynamics of such difficulties. We have analysed the reflections of two teaching practices of the previous two years undergone by the same student teachers (n = 34). In the study, we applied qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods. The analysis of the results shows that during the practice students usually doubt their skills and competences in confronting difficulties in classroom management such as first contact with pupils, attention management, involvement in activities, response to misbehaviour, maintenance of discipline etcetera. The quantitative analysis of the confronted difficulties shows that the proportion of the experienced difficulties does not change from one practice to another (McNemar test χ2 < 3.84). More than half (56 %) of students pointed out the same difficulties faced during the first and the second practice. Although some student teachers assess their pedagogical competence as improved, it remains unclear why a meaningful reduction of the difficulties reported after the first practice does not take place in the second practice. The results suggest more research is needed into the dynamics of difficulties experienced by student teachers and into planning new ways to develop professional competences.

This study examined the challenges faced by student-teachers during teaching practice and their possible solutions in the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue state, Nigeria. To achieve this, the descriptive survey research design was adopted. Four Research questions and four Research hypotheses guided the study. The sample of the study was drawn from five degree options out of the eight degree options in the College of Agricultural and science Education in the study area. Primary data were used for the study specifically obtained using well-structured questionnaire. Two hundred copies of the questionnaires were administered on the respondents and survey data analysed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test. Results of the analyses showed that classroom management significantly affect student-teachers’ performance during teaching practice in secondary schools. The results revealed that curriculum development and instruction significantly affect student-teachers’ during their practice year. The result also revealed that supervision of student-teachers’ does greatly affect students’ teachers during their teachers during their teaching practice. The study recommends that Proper and maximal attention should be given to the classroom management by student-teachers’ in order to achieve the specific objectives at the end of the lesson in the classroom .There is need for the government to provide good library facilities and laboratories. One of the major determinants of quality education in the Bachelor of Education program is the Teaching Practice component. Globally teaching practice is a mandatory undertaking, at both universities and tertiary teacher training colleges. Various universities adopt different modes of teaching practice especially with regards to its supervision. The exercise of teaching practice supervision is often faced by a number of challenges, for example, inadequate staffing which means that teacher trainees may not be adequately supervised. As such, this study aimed at establishing the implications of academic staff participation in teaching practice on the quality of B.Ed program. Hence, this study sought to answer the research question: how does academic staff participation in teaching practice influence the quality of Bachelor of Education program in public universities in Kenya? The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The scope of the study was the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University. The target population of the study comprised 12,342 respondents, where 30 percent of them (433) were sampled. Moi University was used for piloting, after which instruments were modified to ensure highest validity and reliability. The research instruments used in the study comprised questionnaires, interview guide and document analysis schedule. Data collected was analyzed using SPSS. The study findings were presented by the use of frequency tables. The study established that, other than the normal teaching load, academic staff were also tasked with the duty of supervising students while in teaching practice. The study established that on average each lecturer was to supervise at least 20-25 supervision over a two weeks period. In fact, some supervisors devised their own mechanisms of handling a large number of students in teaching practice, for instance, some of them would assemble students in a common hall, mostly away from their stations of practice. Such mechanisms can only be inappropriate as far as quality of assessment is concerned. The challenges surrounding participation of Bachelor of Education academic staff in teaching practice, such as a large number of students, remoteness of some stations as well as inadequate facilitation of academic staff makes it difficult for them to ensure quality experience is gained by students in teaching practice, and as such, this study concludes that teaching practice has not modeled B.Ed. students as expected by CUE. The study recommends Commission for University Education to come up with standard guidelines, which defines the kind of teaching practice Bachelor of Education students should be subjected into, the qualification of academic staff expected to conduct the preparation and assessment as well as the nature of the schools where students can undertake the teaching practice. In so doing, they will compel all the universities offering the degree to ensure quality standards are adhered to at all times. The study further recommends the university management to incorporate the model of mentor supervisors and regulate their recruitment, incentives and reporting in order to reduce the burden of B.Ed Academic Staff participation in teaching practice.
