The growth curve is a tool that can be used to determine the performance potential of fish at different ages. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth curve of pacu (P. mesopotamicus) and the patinga hybrid (P. mesopotamicus × P. brachypomus) cultivated in a semi-intensive system. In the initial phase of the experiment, the pacu and patinga fish weighed 32.6 ± 7.5 g and 24.9 ± 7.1 g, respectively. The Gompertz model was adopted to describe the growth curve. At the end of the experiment, body weight, standard length, head length, body height and body width did not differ significantly between the pacu (625.9 g; 25.6 cm; 7.2 cm; 12.1 cm; 4.5 cm) and the patinga hybrid (727.1 g; 27.3 cm; 7.6 cm; 13.2 cm; 4.9 cm). The asymptotic value (parameter A), relative growth rate (parameter B), and age at the inflection point (parameter C) of the growth curve of the two species were similar for weight and for the evaluated morphometric traits. The asymptotic values obtained for weight in the pacu and the patinga hybrid were 1212.0 g and 1348.0 g, respectively. The growth curve of the patinga hybrid is similar to that of pacu, contrasting with the belief of many fish farmers

AbstractThe objective of the current paper was to apply mixed models to adjust the growth curve of quail lines for meat and laying hens and present the rates of instantaneous, relative and absolute growth. A database was used with birth weight records up to the 148th day of female quail of the lines for meat and posture. The models evaluated were Brody, Von Bertalanffy, Logistic and Gompertz and the types of residues were constant, combined, proportional and exponential. The Gompertz model with the combined residue presented the best fit. Both strains present a high correlation between the parameters asymptotic weight (A) and average growth rate (k). The two strains presented a different growth profile. However, growth rates allow greater discernment of growth profiles. The meat line presented a higher growth rate (6.95 g/day) than the lineage for laying (3.65 g/day). The relative growth rate was higher for lineage for laying (0.15%) in relation to the lineage for meat (0.13%). The inflection point of both lines is on the first third of the growth curve (up to 15 days). All results suggest that changes in management or nutrition could optimize quail production.

AbstractIn this paper, we propose a flexible growth model that constitutes a suitable generalization of the well-known Gompertz model. We perform an analysis of various features of interest, including a sensitivity analysis of the initial value and the three parameters of the model. We show that the considered model provides a good fit to some real datasets concerning the growth of the number of individuals infected during the COVID-19 outbreak, and software failure data. The goodness of fit is established on the ground of the ISRP metric and the $$d_2$$ d 2 -distance. We also analyze two time-inhomogeneous stochastic processes, namely a birth-death process and a birth process, whose means are equal to the proposed growth curve. In the first case we obtain the probability of ultimate extinction, being 0 an absorbing endpoint. We also deal with a threshold crossing problem both for the proposed growth curve and the corresponding birth process. A simulation procedure for the latter process is also exploited.

The objective of this study was to obtain the growth curve of selectively bred tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) reared in different environments. The experiment was carried out in the municipalities of Santo Antônio de Leverger (Mato Grosso – MT) and Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul – MS), Brazil, over 431 days. Weight and morphometric traits of two families (A and B) from the second generation of selective breeding (G2) were measured every 30-45 days. The Gompertz regression model was used to obtain the growth curves. The production performance of both families and the interaction between families and locations (genotype × environment) were evaluated by analysis of variance considering the family (A and B), location (MT and MS), family × location interaction and error as variation factors. The asymptotic value (parameter A) obtained for weight and morphometric traits (except head length) was higher (P<0.05) in MT (weight of families A and B: 2279.6 g) than in MS (weight of family A: 1400.0 g; weight of family B: 1600.0 g). Family B showed better production performance in MS. There was a genotype × environment interaction effect on weight, body length and standard length. The two families have distinct growth patterns in different production environments. Family B has better growth performance in the environment with lower temperatures (MS).

Wet and dry weights of Atlantic salmon are given up to the end of yolk sac absorption, and from them the growth rates are determined. Attempts are made to smooth the growth curve by the methods of Brody, Murray-Schmalhausen, and MacDowell et al. Of these the last is best taking zero time as nine days after fertilization. It is concluded that, as to weight, the interval considered ends before the point of inflection of a Sachs growth cycle. Growth in length, however, represents a complete cycle, hence there can be no simple quantitative relation between length and weight. Deviations from the smoothly descending relative growth rate (RGR or Minot) curve are considered, with the conclusion that all such irregularities so far presented can be attributed to random errors (except possibly the posthatching rise in RGR of the trout at 12° reported by Wood). In general weighing is not sufficiently sensitive as a method, to permit a detailed description of the RGR.

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that size variation among individuals of one particular age affects the precise assessment of anticipated growth curve trajectories and their parameters for the marine shrimp, Penaeus vannamei Boone, 1931. The data came from shrimp farmed in earthen ponds of an aquaculture farm located in the Gulf of California. Five asymptotic models were applied to averaged length-at-age data: specialized Von Bertalanffy, generalized Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, Logistic and Johnson. These models were parametrized considering two criteria: (1) variability in length-at-age () decreases with age (growth compensation approach), (2) constant variance (“normal” and “fat tail”). The model parameters were computed with the maximum likelihood criterion. The corrected version of Akaike’s information criterion AICc, selected the Gompertz model and the growth compensation approach as those who fitted the data best. We conclude that the growth compensation approach allows the application of a very high performance objective function to analyse individual length-at-age variability without underestimation of the parameters, and also that the best model to describe the growth trajectory of P. vannamei in a farmed environment is a sigmoid curve with an inflection point at 34% of the life period analysed (the Gompertz model).

Significant political and economic transformations took place on the territory of contemporary Russia in the first part of the 20th century. We hypothesized that they would have affected male growth curve negatively. To test this idea, the dataset was collected to present the graph, which illustrates the changes in male body height during the 20th century. We searched for bibliographic sources with information about body height of men and women born during the 20th century, with full description of measurement methodology, sample design and significant geographical distribution of the dataset covering more than 15 territories of the country – cities or regions. Such criteria were met only for men. We found only 8 sources that could be considered reliable in the research. The observed graph confirms positive changes in male body height on the territory of the European part of contemporary Russia: for those, who were born in 1900‘s it was 166.1 cm, in 1920s – 166.5 cm, in 1940s – 171 cm, in 1960s – 174.8 cm and in 1980s the indicator reached 176.1 cm. No significant negative changes in this indicator have been found during the studied period. The primary hypothesis that political and socio-economic transformations affect male growth curve negatively was confirmed only partly. We concluded that unfavorable political and socio-economic events (such as revolutions, World War I and World War II, purges and famines) influenced the pace of body height increase in men. While the main period of secular trend was fixed in the first decades of the 20th century in Germany, Netherlands and France, in this part of Russia it occurred later, in 1930–1960s. However, the total increase in male height was very similar for all mentioned territories (9–11 cm) during 1900–1980’s.

ABSTRACT For prediction of the shelf life of the mushroom Agaricus bisporus, the growth curve of the main spoilage microorganisms was studied under isothermal conditions at 2 to 22°C with a modified Gompertz model. The effect of temperature on the growth parameters for the main spoilage microorganisms was quantified and modeled using the square root model. Pseudomonas spp. were the main microorganisms causing A. bisporus decay, and the modified Gompertz model was useful for modelling the growth curve of Pseudomonas spp. All the bias factors values of the model were close to 1. By combining the modified Gompertz model with the square root model, a prediction model to estimate the shelf life of A. bisporus as a function of storage temperature was developed. The model was validated for A. bisporus stored at 6, 12, and 18°C, and adequate agreement was found between the experimental and predicted data.

Although the invasive gammarid Dikerogammarus villosus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) is a recent successful invader of Western Europe's lakes and rivers and a threat to North American aquatic ecosystems, its biology is scarcely known. Different growth models for each sex were established for the first time for a natural population of a freshwater gammarid. The Laird–Gompertz growth curve was used because it best fit our data, and it was associated with an environmental forcing function to adjust the growth rate according to seasonal variations in environmental conditions. The growth curve was applied to a length decomposition obtained using the Bhattacharya method, realised on data obtained from a 1-year population dynamics study. The models allowed an assessment of biological traits such as life-span, the age of sexual maturity, the potential number of generations per year, and the growth rate as a function of environmental conditions. Differences in growth rate between males and females were consistent with biological processes such as allocation of energy for reproduction. Dikerogammarus villosus had higher rates of growth and earlier sexual maturity than all other taxa studied, which may explain its invasive tendencies and its ability to colonize numerous new ecosystems, thus becoming a cosmopolitan freshwater species.
