Reporting verbs is one of the most important issues in writing academic paper because they are used to express the process and reliability of claims to support authors’ writing. Therefore, the current study aimed at investigating (1) the most frequently used category of reporting verbs in applied linguistic articles and (2) how the category used in the citation process is used. 52 articles from three applied linguistic journals were analyzed using Antconc software’s concordance function. This study focused on reporting verbs used in the literature review section since it consists of more reporting verbs than other sections in articles. The reporting verbs in the articles were analyzed into a concordance line and then were classified into Hyland’s Framework of reporting verbs (2002). The results of the study showed that the uses of reporting verbs were classified into research acts, which was the most frequent use of reporting verbs, discourse acts, and cognition acts respectively. The study also presented the frequently used of reporting verbs in different subcategories of the research, discourse, and cognition acts. Additionally, reporting verbs were examined to investigate the verb forms and voices used in applied linguistic articles. The use of reporting verbs according to Hyland’s (2002) framework, verb forms, and voices are also discussed.

Manifest intertextuality is a fundamental aspect of all academic discourse, and, hence, this study purports to explorethe myriad functions of citation in a representative and contrastive corpus drawn from 20 Literature Review chaptersin the domain of Applied Linguistics, and equally divided among Ph.D. theses successfully defended in Sudan andBritain. A variety of typologies were utilized to elicit citations, including Thompson’s (2005) classification ofintegral and non-integral citations, together with Hyland’s (2002) designation of denotative and evaluative functionsassociated with reporting verbs. Groom’s (2000) and Petric’s (2007) notions of averral and attribution, propositionalresponsibility and knowledge transformation also inform this investigation. Results indicate that the densedeployment of citations and the predilection both corpora have for integral structures, verbatim quotations andpresent active Discourse reporting verbs are largely dictated by the discursive and human-imbued nature of AppliedLinguistics. On the other hand, the findings reveal that Sudanese candidates formally and functionally employcitations in manners markedly different from their British peers. Thus, the Sudanese corpus is characterized byblatant errors, repetition and awkwardness in both documenting sources and reporting the findings of research.Moreover, naïve unwarranted quotations and authorial evaluations were ubiquitously observed, as compared to theBritish corpus. More significantly, there were ample variations in the way in which the two groups conceive of therole of the Literature Review. While the British adopted a range of Writer-oriented and metadiscoursal strategies toamalgamate and integrate the cited materials within their mainstream arguments, the Sudanese candidates werestrictly concerned with unmediated and uncontested attribution of ideas to their authors. Such is the synthetic natureof the resultant type of this Literature Review that the writer’s textual voice is submerged under the sheer burden ofsuccessive descriptive citations, thus eclipsing almost all of the objectives of this chapter in critiquing sources andsubordinating the cited literature to the overarching transformative perspective of the thesis writer. The Discussion isilluminated through extensive quotations from the two corpora.

Stenosing tenosynovitis of the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) without trauma is very rare. We report a 21-year-old woman who presented with dorsoulnar wrist pain during palmar wrist flexion and soft tissue mass at the site of pain. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a round mass radial to the EDM tendon. Conservative treatment for 3 months failed to improve the patient’s pain levels. Intraoperative findings revealed smaller radial slip of the EDM tendon, and bifurcation of these was under the distal portion of the extensor retinaculum (ER). Surgical release of the ER, resection of the smaller slip of the EDM tendon, and tenosynovectomy were performed. Histological examination showed tenosynovitis. At the final follow-up 1 year postoperatively, she was asymptomatic. A literature review suggested that stenosing tenosynovitis of the EDM tendon might be caused by frequent use of the hand with a background history of bifurcation of the EDM tendon.

In the present work I try to show how certain distinctive grammatical-rhetorical features of the hymns, such as frequent use of elaborate epithets, a rich arsenal of noun and pronoun address forms as well as a large variety of finite verb forms, can be accounted for from a pragmatic perspective by discussing them at the three main linguistic levels — morphology, lexicon, syntax. 10.39 is a representative laudatory hymn performed in a ceremonial setting, whose topic is related to the desire of a female speaker to find a good husband. The analysis is based on a socially and psychologically oriented application of pragmatic principles, namely, the politeness framework and it takes into account the specific context, on which the pragmatic interpretations are strictly dependent. The hymn is discussed as a communicative event, possible through the use of the Vedic language and designed to achieve specific ritualistic goals.

ABSTRACT:Background:In our targeted review (Section 2), 12 acute medications received a strong recommendation for use in acute migraine therapy while four received a weak recommendation for use. Strong recommendations were made to avoid use of two other medications, except for exceptional circumstances. Two anti-emetics received strong recommendations for use as needed.Objective:To organize the available acute migraine medications into acute migraine treatment strategies in order to assist the practitioner in choosing a specific medication(s) for an individual patient.Methods:Acute migraine treatment strategies were developed based on the targeted literature review used for the development of this guideline (Section 2), and a general literature review. Expert consensus groups were used to refine and validate these strategies.Results:Based on evidence for drug efficacy, drug side effects, migraine severity, and coexistent medical disorders, our analysis resulted in the formulation of eight general acute migraine treatment strategies. These could be grouped into four categories: 1) two mild-moderate attack strategies, 2) two moderate-severe attack or NSAID failure strategies, 3) three refractory migraine strategies, and 4) a vasoconstrictor unresponsive-contraindicated strategy. In addition, strategies were developed for menstrual migraine, migraine during pregnancy, and migraine during lactation. The eight general treatment strategies were coordinated with a “combined acute medication approach” to therapy which used features of both the “stratified” and the “step care across attacks” approaches to acute migraine management.Conclusions:The available medications for acute migraine treatment can be organized into a series of strategies based on patient clinical features. These strategies may help practitioners make appropriate acute medication choices for patients with migraine.

This research examined the different theories of organisational typologies and their conceptualised application to higher education institutions. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is the literature review which discusses each of the organisational typologies and their basic characteristics. Specific examples are also given for each of organisational typology alongside the proponent of each type. Four different types of typologies presented by Miles and Snow [1], Burns and Stalker [2], Morgan [3] and Hoy and Miskel [4] are discussed in the review section. The second part practically synthesised how each of the organisational typologies could apply to the higher educational institutions. A mind map was created to prove how a specifically higher institution may be classified as a ‘defender’ type of organisation.

The research paper attempt to disentangle of (applied) linguistics in English language teaching.  In this research, I used a literature review as my method. The result revealed that the role (applied) linguistics in English language teaching is needed for language learners. As a result, English language learners have beneficial from (applied) linguistics along with study English language teaching.  The content of (applied) linguistics help language learners better to comprehend ELT.

Literature review in academic writing plays an integral role in demonstrating writers’ knowledge about a field of study as well as in informing the writers of influential researchers and research groups in the field. More importantly, writers are expected to critically analyze previous studies related to their topic. Despite its importance to the academic text, student writers find it challenging to establish a critical stance and to provide evaluative judgment when reviewing the literature. This paper presents a contrastive analysis of student and expert writers’ expressions of criticality in literature review sections of 8 applied linguistics master theses from UiTM (a Malaysian public university) and 62 literature reviews of research journal articles from a similar field (i.e., Language and Communication, English for Academic Purposes and Applied Linguistics). Corpus techniques are used to identify the most common expressions of criticality used by these two groups of writers. The corpus was analyzed using detailed consistency analysis and concordance software from WordSmith Tools (Scott, 2012). Findings revealed that student writers prefer to use hedges and boosters to express criticality and the evaluations they make tend to sound more reporting rather than analyzing and synthesizing the resources critically. Results from this study are beneficial for constructing pedagogical instructions and guidelines for student writers in their critical analysis of the literature review.
