With a development history of more than half a century, the learner-centered approach has become a new teaching paradigm worldwide. The approach can produce effective and significant learning focusing on learners’ development, learning, and learning outcomes. This study aimed to determine how a learner-centered approach can increase students’ engagement, improve their English learning strategies, and enhance their academic performance in a specific EFL setting. Bloom’s taxonomy, Zhao’s “Neo Tri-Centers,” Krashen’s L2 acquisition theory, and primarily Biggs’ constructive alignment functioned as valuable guidelines when designing the instructional activities. Constructive alignment holds that intended learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and assessment tasks should be aligned organically to achieve effective learning. Data collected through the instructor’s observations, questionnaires, assessments of the students’ performances, and colleague’s feedback show that the learner-centered approach has remarkably motivated the students, improved their learning strategies, and enhanced their academic performance. The results and implications of this study may be of reference importance for future language teaching in a foreign language or second language setting.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on a course in entrepreneurship education for students studying for a Masters in Educational Sciences at a Finnish university. The course was structured around the principles of constructive alignment and aimed to move beyond reflection on entrepreneurship towards action Design/methodology/approach The course was delivered in alignment with intended learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and assessment. Along with lectures, group work and peer-review activities, students prepared a career development plan as the course progressed, undertook a homework assignment, wrote a reflective journal, and sat the GET2 test twice. Findings Quantitative and qualitative analysis suggests that students developed more enterprising attitudes as result of participating in the course. This paper makes an argument in favour of entrepreneurship as a subject for all, a transformative experience capable of shaping the mindset in all who participate. Originality/value This paper shows how a course on entrepreneurial education based on a “through” approach can be taught at a tertiary level in places other than economics faculties or business schools. Most tertiary courses rely on “about” and “for” approaches to entrepreneurial education, are teacher-centred, and follow a behaviouristic or cognitive learning paradigm of knowledge transmission, as opposed to the student-centred constructivist approach deployed and described here.

The decision by the Minister of Higher Education, that Malaysian post-secondary institutions should move to outcomes-based teaching and learning (OBTL), involves a change in teaching in over 1,000 institutions. This massive changeover would be accomplished using the “Train-the-Trainers” model in a series of workshops. We are proud to play a role in the first of these Train-the-Trainers programmes. In this article we explain how OBTL was conceptualised in the constructive alignment model, and how this first programme was structured. The major outcome was that each trainer would devise their own training programme to suit the conditions of their institution. The results were impressive but there were some difficulties; mainly to do with limiting the number of intended learning outcomes to a workable number, that would need to be addressed in order to achieve optimal outcomes.

This paper delineates the process of constructively aligning course intended learning outcomes, teaching learning activities, and assessment tasks to boost students’ accomplishments of intended learning outcomes. It, also highlights, how the usage of two teaching tools, well-regarded by educators, emerged propitious in analyzing students’ progression in learning and in augmenting their academic skills. Biggs’ model of constructive alignment, Biggs’ SOLO taxonomy and Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives were used for this purpose. Four factors emerged pivotal for efficacy and effectiveness of the process - creating positive learning environments, linking academic content to real life situations, selecting appropriate teaching learning activities and developing learning outcomes that are measurable and attainable, to facilitate the teaching and learning processes.

Eight years ago, the Department decided to embark upon a radical change to its first-year teaching. A core feature of that change was the introduction of “classroom feedback systems” in large, engineering science classes, starting with ClassTalk and then moving on to the Personal Response System. This chapter gives a brief history of the reasons for this change, which involved other, complimentary, teaching, and learning strategies, our experiences, current developments, and a look to the future, in particular, the way we would like to see the technology developing.

This study discusses the learning strategies used by elementary school teachers to students in instilling online learning in Muhammadiyah 1 Krian Elementary School. This needs to be researched, because learning strategies are one of the important aspects in giving birth to the character of students who are intelligent, creative and have character. The purpose of holding a learning strategy is to realize effectiveness and efficiency in teaching and learning activities. Strategy is a pattern that is deliberately planned and determined to carry out an action. The strategy also includes the objectives of the activity, the students involved in learning, the content of the activity, the process of the activity, and the infrastructure that supports learning activities. With the appropriate learning strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is hoped that it can improve the ability of students, especially at SD Muhammadiyah 1 Krian to participate in a quality teaching process, where learning will provide opportunities for participants to ask questions, discuss, and actively use new knowledge gained and easy to understand. The formulation of the problem raised in this study is how the learning strategies applied by SD Muhammadiyah 1 Krian teachers will depend on the approach used, while how to implement the strategy can be determined through various learning methods. The existence of this learning strategy will affect the learning outcomes of the students themselves. The conclusion is that with the learning outcomes students are expected to be able to achieve a result that has been achieved after experiencing the learning process with their environment to obtain knowledge that is in accordance with the learning objectives.
