The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes of three influential groups toward homework: parents, teachers and the public. Specifically, attitudes toward reducing and eliminating homework, as well as creating alternatives to conventional homework, are examined. The first hypothesis is that the attitude of teachers and parents toward homework is positive, whereas that of the public is negative, in line with the Israeli Ministry of Education that suggests changing homework policies. Another hypothesis is that there is a correlation between the seniority of teachers and their attitudes toward homework—the greater the seniority, the more negative the attitude. Finally, the effect of various background variables of teachers (class grade and subject area: sciences or humanities) and parents (age of parents, number of children in the family and child birth-order) on their attitudes toward homework is examined. The first research hypothesis was confirmed—most teachers and parents are supportive of homework, whereas the public is the least supportive. In addition, the public is the most supportive of changing homework policies, parents are less supportive, and teachers are the least supportive. No correlation was found between the seniority of teachers and their attitudes toward homework. Finally, background variables have no effect on attitudes toward homework. According to these findings, the public is not yet ready to completely forgo homework, which has been so widely used and accepted. The desire to change the traditional homework policy exists, but the concept that homework is essential remains.

This study is an attempt to evaluate the effects of media language misusing in comedian programs of Iraqi Kurdish televisions. To achieve this goal, the researchers have done an online survey with 145 TV viewers; as well as analyzing the thematic contents of 12 episodes of the BEZMÎ BEZM program on the KurdMax satellite channel.   Based on the research results; media language misusing in the BEZMÎ BEZM program has negative effects on viewers of this program, despite the fact that the majority of opinions agreed on the definition of this satellite as a Kurdish entertainment channel and the rates of views of its main programs "Great". However, they also agreed that this program on the KurdMax satellite channel has become a popular platform for insults, exchange of accusations, and defamation of certain personalities and groups in society, and a reason for sabotaging the Kurdish language and its methods, producing linguistic and psychological violence and highlighting gender discrimination. In addition to sabotaging the public taste of viewers, lack of respect for their needs, delinquency of adolescents, reducing the value of artistic work etiquette and educational foundations, and underestimating the family and Kurdish culture and its peculiarities. As for the topics presented in this program, the main goal is to make viewers laugh only and to achieve this; they do not hesitate to spread market language and archaic and patriarchal cultures, encourage gender differences of men and women, social and sexual taboos, defame personalities, neglect health guidelines, and violate professional media ethics. All of the above; represents the main identity of the BEZMÎ BEZM program on the KurdMax satellite channel. As a final point, this research has recommended the relevant people and bodies to subordinate such programs in order to review its content based on legal and ethical media standards, laws, and rules of the Kurdish language, along with abiding professional art principles.

MY Psychology is an online educational platform currently based in Malaysia, formed with the intention to spread awareness towards the general public of not only on issues related with mental health and those who suffer under mental illnesses, but also to create a place where psychology as a basic knowledge can be taught and learned. This is in order to correct misunderstandings from the public toward psychology. Operating on the internet requires the company to shift towards a marketing-oriented direction, in the meantime, coping with internal and external challenges in order to strive for greater reach and engagement from the audience.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explain how public libraries have been instrumental in early child school literacy teaching and learning. Most African public schools do not usually afford enough core textbooks and supplementary readers.Design/methodology/approachThis was a qualitative case study in Western Kenya amongst public library staff members, public primary school teachers and parents of library children clients. The following questions were addressed: What is the book situation in public primary schools in the study site? What school-type literacy-related services are offered by the sampled public library? and What are library staff members’, teachers’ and parents’ feelings about the public library services offered? Observations, interviews and document studies were used to collect data. Data were analysed thematically.FindingsPublic schools do not have enough core textbooks and the situation is worse for supplementary readers; the public library branch studied offers critical school-type literacies to school children both at the library building as well as at public schools registered with it; and library staff members, teachers, and parents express positive feelings about the services offered.Research limitations/implicationsThis was a case study whose findings might not apply to the larger situation and the study did not confirm actual literacy benefits of the library services amongst school children by, for instance, conducting literacy tests. The findings are, however, an index to the possible situation in the macro context.Practical implicationsThe relevant stakeholders should find ways of co-opting public libraries as associates of public schools in literacy teaching. This relationship is not straight forward in Kenya.Originality/valueThe findings reported are from original research.

This study concerns the struggle for Philadelphia's LOVE Park, which involved the general public and its functionaries on one side and skateboarders on the other. This paper argues LOVE Park was one place composed of two distinct spaces: the public space the public engendered and the common space the skateboarders produced. This case demonstrates that public and common space must be understood as distinct, for they entail different understandings of publicly accessible space. Additionally, public and common spaces often exist simultaneously as “public–common spaces,” which emphasizes how they reciprocally shape one another. This sheds light on the emergence of “anti–common public space,” which is evident in LOVE Park's 2016 redesign. This concept considers how common spaces are increasingly negated in public spaces. The introduction of common space to the study of public spaces is significant as it allows for more nuanced understandings of transformations in the urban landscape.

My thesis explores the family album as an indivisible object within a museum’s collection. Family albums hold both private and public importance for their ability to share collective memories and are valuable resources for scholars and the general public. To realize the inherent value of albums, I argue that we need to treat them as singular objects. Most institutions – such as museums, libraries or archives – treat family albums merely as a group of individual images. In this thesis, I propose an alternative approach: viewing and digitizing the albums as whole objects that are inseparable, lest we distort the narrative shaped in the album. The digitization process advances three services: first, digitization increases access to the album; second, digitization often enables the public to see and understand the album as a whole, maintaining the vision that the album’s maker sought to construct; third, digitization helps preserve the albums. My thesis investigates best practices for family album digitization so that the public can see albums as whole objects. A case study will focus on the Evans family collection from the FamCam at the ROM (accession numbers: 2018.24.1-21), a family collection which comes from a Canadian family that lived in China from 1888, for nearly a 100 years. Twenty-one family albums comprise the collection. The collection portrays the lives of a Western family in China, and provides insight into a century of photography and history. My thesis discusses the methodology, tools, and specific techniques for digitization, while highlighting the complexity of family albums. Though this digitization process may differ from the typical protocols for artifacts, the uniqueness of family albums necessitates genre-specific procedures. My thesis contributes to the emerging literature on family photography in public institutions, and develops an original method for preserving and archiving them digitally.

As part of the Ministry of Education (MoE) language policies, the UAE government made Arabic language a compulsory subject for non-speakers in all private schools. The UAE government stipulates that private schools must offer a core programme in Arabic as a second language. Thus, non-Arab expatriates are required to study Arabic as an Additional Language (AAL) from Grade 1 to Grade 9. This qualitative case study aims to explore the attitudes of parents towards the implementation of Arabic as an Additional Language (AAL) in one of the private British schools in Dubai, wherein AAL has been rated ‘Acceptable’. This exploration is a snapshot of attitudes held by parents as key stakeholders in the triad of school, teachers, and parents’ partnership towards the learning and teaching of AAL- whether approving or disapproving of it. It will illuminate some of the arising issues related to potential gaps between the implementation of AAL (practice) and the MoE framework (Theory). Ultimately, this paper aims to uncover challenges and proffer recommendations. To enhance the implementation of AAL in schools, this paper will propose potential parental engagement initiatives that can yield valuable policy decisions.

Subject area The subject areas are family-owned business, entrepreneurship and strategic management. Study level/applicability The target audiences for the case study are BBA and MBA students and management trainees who are interested in learning about family-owned business and the problems faced by them when generations change. This case can be used to teach concepts in family-owned business and strategic management courses in the context of emerging markets. The case also introduces the problems faced by a traditionally operating organization which has to change to survive in the market. The case can be used to teach senior management teams participating in executive education programs on how problems arise in family-owned business. To successfully work with this case study, students need to have the basic theoretical understanding of family-owned business. Case overview Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing home (SSANH), one of the most reputed Ayurvedic treatment centers in Kozhikode, Kerala in India, was converted into its present form in 1974 from Thekkayil Vaidyasala by Thekkayil Rajaratnam Vydiar. The latest addition to this family run nursing home is Dr Sananad Ratnam, who in continuity of his family tradition studied Ayurveda. Dr Sanand wanted to rethink the positioning of the 400-year-old family business system with an objective to increase the number of people served by SSANH. He is armed with ambitious plans to expand SSANH and increase the volume of patients served. Dr Sanand’s father, the second partner of SSANH, was not quite supportive of this idea. His father felt that the increase in scale without compromise in quality was impossible in Ayurveda. Dr Sanand felt handicapped with problems such as lack of marketing strategies, lack of standard managerial procedures, lack of innovation in processes and, more importantly, conflicting ideologies between father and son in the family-owned business. To address these problems, Dr Sanand has recently hired the services of a consulting firm. This case highlights how SSANH, in spite of being in an advantageous position, is unable to exploit its full potential. Further explaining the different ways in which different generations perceive business, this case invites the attention to the dilemma: Should the business proceed with its expansion plan? If it decides to expand, how it should convince the previous generation of the family that the expansion plan accommodates their concerns. Expected learning outcomes After completion of this case, students would be able to: gain a perspective on the problems faced by a family-owned business which has successfully survived for decades; understand how a family-owned business functions differently from other business models; evaluate different ways in which the organization can look to solve the dilemma by considering the different stakeholders in question; and apply the result of the literature on family-owned businesses to understand the dynamics of business of this specific setting, i.e. one that has a rich heritage, is in an emerging economy and is a family-owned business. It describes the problem faced by the founder of a security service company, Kurniawan Security Services Sdn Bhd., in handing over his business to his sons. The case depicts the occurrence of conflicts as one of the common problems in running a family business which, in the end, may affect the perpetuity of the business concerns. In 2006 the World Bank studied which were the primary engines of nations’ wealth and concluded that it depends to a large extent on the legitimacy of their public institutions. This research explores legitimacy as an intangible good of the public sector, considering legitimacy as a judgment on the actions of organizations according to social values ​​and norms (Suchman, 1995; Deephouse, 1996; Tyler, 2006; Bitektine, 2011). Related to this concept, we address the concepts of online legitimacy and media legitimacy. Four dimensions of legitimacy are studied: procedural, consequential, structural, and personal. The objective of this work is to explore the evolution of the degree of congruence of the judgments of legitimacy that are formulated about a public institution and their leaders, media, and citizens. The selected case study is the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports and its ministers José Ignacio Wert and Iñigo Méndez de Vigo (2011-2015). The methodological design used for the empirical observation is triangular, enabling a quantitative content analysis to contrast the three observation points from a physical and online perspective. The data enable an evaluation of the evolution over time of the congruence between the statements of the person who directs a public organization and their consequences regarding the trust of citizens. The results reveal the aspects of legitimacy that must be considered in communication practices to avoid disconnecting the organization from the media and citizens. Resumen En 2006 el Banco Mundial estudió cuáles fueron los motores primordiales de riqueza de las naciones y concluyó que la riqueza de los países depende en una gran parte de la legitimidad de sus instituciones públicas. Esta investigación explora la legitimidad como un bien intangible del sector público, considerando la legitimidad como un juicio sobre las acciones de las organizaciones de acuerdo a valores y normas sociales (Suchman, 1995; Deephouse, 1996; Tyler, 2006; Bitektine, 2011). Relacionados a este concepto, aborda los conceptos de legitimidad online y legitimidad mediática. Se estudian cuatro dimensiones de la legitimidad: procedimental, consiguiente, estructural y personal. El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar la evolución del grado de congruencia de los juicios de legitimidad que formulan sobre una institución pública y su líder, la propia organización, los medios y los ciudadanos. El diseño metodológico empleado para la observación empírica es triangular y se trata de un análisis de contenido cuantitativo para contrastar los tres puntos de observación desde una perspectiva tradicional y online. Los datos permitirán evaluar la evolución en el tiempo de la congruencia entre el discurso de la persona que dirige una organización pública y sus consecuencias en la confianza de los ciudadanos. A la luz de los resultados se muestran los aspectos de la legitimidad que hay que considerar en las prácticas de comunicación para evitar la desconexión de la organización con los medios y con los ciudadanos.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report on a three-year case study of the extent with which altmetrics compare to traditional metrics in certain subject areas for selected departments at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine (COM). Design/methodology/approachA three-year analysis of peer-reviewed papers and invited editorials from 2009 to 2013 written by tenure-track faculty from 20 COM departments was done to explore what subject areas received the highest altmetric scores. Research output was searched in PubMed; articles were quantified by subject area, times cited in Scopus, and its altmetric score over each of three successive years. FindingsThe topics of the highest scored altmetric papers (n = 40) sample focused on stroke, obesity, and diabetes for all three years. Analysis of high initial altmetric scores over the course of the three years shifted from a possible predictor of future impact in the second year to no indicator of long-term interest in the scientific community as the public interest waned over time. Research limitations/implicationsThe authors used Scopus Times Cited and Altmetrics.com to gather data. Originality/valueInitially assessed a total of 3,678 unique publications and worked with the 40 highest altmetric scores in subsequent years. Data showed that subjects of interest to the public receive the highest altmetric scores and the topic areas did not change over the course of the study. These initially high altmetric scores do not indicate long-term interest by the scientific community.
