Understanding genetic variability and mode of gene action for agronomic and yield related traits is important in formulation of effective rice breeding program for genetic enhancement of grain yield. Combining ability analysis and heterosis was conducted to identify yield associated traits from nine male indicas and three female japonicas, together with their 27 F1 hybrids. Four parental lines, including Basmati 370, Basmati 217, K2-54 and Komboka showed good general combining ability in days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of tillers plant-1, number of spikelet’s panicle-1, number of panicles plant-1, number of filled grains panicle-1, and grain yield. While the combine K2-9 × Komboka, K2-9 × Basmati 370, K2-54 × Dourado Precoce and K2-54 × Basmati 217 showed specific good for grain yield. The hybrids K2-9 × Basmati 370, K2-8 × Basmati 217, K2-54 × Basmati 217 and K2-9 × Komboka showed 20% excess in standard check variety, suggesting that they could be good breeding donors.

Pooled analysis of 8 genotypes of wheat of diverse origin, their 28 F1s and 2 checks was carried out in 4 different environments to study the combining ability in bread wheat for grain yield and its component traits. On pooled basis, analysis of variance due to GCA and SCA was significant for all characters revealed difference between parents for GCA and difference between crosses for SCA. Similarly, mean square due to GCA × E was significant for number of effective tillers per plant and flag leaf area revealed influence of environment on GCA. Whereas SCA × E was also significant for number of effective tillers per plant and grain yield per plant revealed influence of environment on SCA. The variance due to GCA was higher than their respective SCA for all characters except number of grains per spike indicating that additive type of gene action played role in the expression of all these traits. Significant GCA effects for grain yield and its component traits were exhibited by the parents HD 2987, Lok 1 and HI 1544. Fourteen crosses recorded showed significant SCA effects for grain yield and related traits.

Combining ability on grain yield and its components from line × tester analysis of thirty rice hybrids (Oryza sativa L.) produced by crossing three newly developed CMS lines and ten testers of local origin were studied. The analysis revealed higher SCA variance than GCA variance for all the characters except plant height indicating the prevalence of non-additive gene action. The line KCMS 45A and testers MSN 36 and KMR 3 were the good general combiners for yield and its major contributing characters. MSN 99 was the only good general combiner among the male parents for earliness and dwarfness. The hybrids KCMS 46A × MSN 75, KCMS 44A × KMR 4 and KCMS 45A × KMR 3 were identified as potential hybrids for yield contributing characters based on SCA effects which could be exploited in future rice breeding programme by adopting heterosis breeding strategy. The contribution of testers towards the total variance was found higher than lines and line x tester interaction suggesting predominant of testers influence for these characters. Post-anthesis water stress is a major limitation to wheat grain yield globally. Understanding the nature of gene action of yield related traits under post-anthesis water stress will help to breed stress-resilient genotypes. Four bread wheat genotypes having varying degree of drought tolerance were crossed in a full-diallel fashion and the resultant crosses along with the parental genotypes, were subjected to water stress after the onset of anthesis in order to investigate their comparative performance and nature of gene action. Parental genotypes Babax (B) and Westonia (W) performed better compared with C306 (C) and Dharwar Dry (D) with respect to relative reduction in grain yield and related traits under stressed condition. Direct cross B × D and reciprocal cross W × C were more tolerant to water stress, while cross between C306 and Dharwar Dry, either direct or reciprocal, produced more sensitive genotypes. Combining ability analysis revealed that both additive and non-additive gene action were involved in governing the inheritance of the studied traits, with predominance of non-additive gene action for most of the traits. Among the parents, Babax and Westonia were better combiners for grain yield under stress condition. B × D in stressed condition, and C × W in both stressed and stress-free conditions, were the most suitable specific crosses. Moreover, specificity of parental genotypes as female parents in cross combination was also evident from the significant reciprocal combining ability effects of certain traits. Low to medium narrow sense heritability and high broad sense heritability were observed for most of the studied traits in both well watered and water stress conditions. The results of the study suggested that specific cross combinations with high specific combining ability involving better performing parents with high general combining ability may generate hybrids as well as segregating populations suitable for further breeding programs.

The present study was undertaken to explore the genetic architecture of pearl millet through combining ability analysis in a 5X5 diallel fashion. Both GCA and SCA mean squares were significant in grain yield, plant height, panicle length and days to flowering. However, these were non-significant for number of productive tillers and panicle girth. General combining ability estimates revealed that genotype MGP-322 was good general combiner for all the traits under study except for days to flowering for which MGP-335 and 13RBS-01 were good general combiners but these were poor general combiners for all other traits under study. The crosses MGP-322XMGP-328, MGP-322XMGP-335, MGP-328X13RBS-13, 13RBS-01X13RBS-13 and MGP-322X13RBS-01 were best specific combiners for grain yield and some other attributes respectively. All these crosses involved at least one good general combiner except MGP-328X13RBS-13. This suggested that good general combiners are the best tool in improving the crop yield by manipulating the genetic architecture. Combining ability variances revealed that although both GCA and SCA variances were important, however, SCA variances were higher than GCA variances suggesting that non additive type of gene action was more prominent in the inheritance of characters under study.

Combining ability on grain yield and its components from line × tester analysis of 70 rice hybrids produced by crossing seven CMS lines and ten testers of local and exotic origin were studied. The analysis revealed higher sca variance than gca variance for all the traits indicating the prevalence of non-additive gene action. Testers played important role towards panicle length (48.18%), spikelet fertility (60.46%) and grain yield/plant (55.44%) indicating predominant of paternal influence for these traits. The contribution of interactions (line × tester) were found vital for plant height (58.55%), effective tillers/plant (51.69%), days to 50% flowering (48.95%), days to maturity (48.32%), flag leaf length (68.55%), panicles/m2 (48.61%) and panicle weight (50.39%). D.ShanA was the only good general combiner among the female parent for earliness and dwarfness. Male parent IR64R was best general combiner for dwarfness. The crosses BRRI9A × BR168R and D.ShanA × BR168R were identified as most promising for yield and desired traits based on sca effects, per se performance and gca effects of parents for grain yield and its components in rice which could be exploited beneficially in future rice breeding program by adopting heterosis breeding strategy. Combining ability analysis for grain yield and its contributing characters in maize were carried out in 5×5 diallel cross. The highest percentage of heterosis for grain per ear over mid parent and better parent were observed by the cross P2×P3. Crosses P1×P3 and P1×P5 showed significant negative heterosis for days to maturity. Significant general and specific combining ability variances were observed for all the characters except ear height. Almost equal role of additive and non-additive gene actions was observed for days to maturity. Additive genetic variance was preponderant for grains per ear and 1000-grain weight and non-additive gene action was involved in plant height, ear height, days to silking, and days to maturity. Twenty F1 hybrids from three CMS lines and eight pollen parents were evaluated to study the heterosis for various yield and quality traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The findings suggested that the magnitude of heterosis differed from character to character and cross to cross. Majority of the hybrids recorded desirable heterosis for grain yield. Among the rice hybrids exhibiting high heterosis for grain yield, IR-68897A x Pusa Sugandh-3, IR-58025A x HUR-JM-59221 and IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5 were top performers. The hybrid, IR-68897A x Pusa Sugandh-3 recorded highest yield per plant, and was among the best three performers for traits, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity and number of effective tillers per plant. Thus, IR-68897A x Pusa Sugandh-3 may be considered as the best heterotic combination for yield and yield traits. Among the three high yielding hybrids, IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5 was found to be relatively better performing for majority of the quality traits. Thus, IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5 may be considered as the best cross combination if both yield and quality traits are taken into consideration.

An investigation was undertaken to assess the combining ability for yield and quality traits in rice. Three WA cytoplasmic male sterile lines of rice i.e., IR-58025A, IR-68897A and Pusa 6A were crossed with six restorer genotypes i.e., Sanwal Basmati, Pusa Sugandh-2, Pusa Sugandh-3, Pusa Sugandh-5, Pusa 2517-2-51-1 and HURJM- 59221 in line x tester design to generate 18 hybrids. Among the female parents, IR-58025A revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for yield per plant and most of the quality traits. Among the pollen parents, Pusa Sugandh-3 revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for most of the yield traits. However, Pusa Sugandh-5 revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for most of the quality traits. Pusa 6A x Pusa Sugandh-2 evinced the highest significant value of SCA effect for grain yield followed by IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5. However, IR- 68897A x Pusa 2517-2-51-1 followed by IR-58025A x Sanwal Basmati revealed the significant desirable value of SCA effect for most of the quality traits. For both yield and quality traits, IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5, IR-68897A x HUR-JM-59221 and Pusa 6A x Pusa Sugandh-2 were found to be relatively better performing. Thus, present study aims to develop hybrids performing better for both yield and quality traits.
