This paper presents a preliminary physical and mathematical model which describes the specific action of an automatic, short recoil operated firearm with an accelerator. The model includes the characteristic stages of the automatic action for a short recoil operated firearm (during one half of a single shot cycle), which enables simulation and assessment of the effect of the firearm’s system design parameters on the recoil velocities in specific recoil assembly components.

The objective of this paper was to create a mathematical model of vacuum drops in a form that enables the testing of the impact of design parameters of a milking cluster on the values of vacuum drops in the claw. Simulation tests of the milking cluster were conducted, with the use of a simplified model of vacuum drops in the form of a fourth-degree polynomial. Sensitivity analysis and a simulation of a model with a simplified structure of vacuum drops in the claw were carried out. As a result, the impact of the milking machine’s design parameters on the milking process could be analysed. The results showed that a change in the local loss and linear drag coefficient in the long milk duct will have a lower impact on vacuum drops if a smaller flux of inlet air, a higher head of the air/liquid mix, and a higher diameter of the long milk tube are used.

Abstract Airtankers, while actively engaging in initial attack, are sometimes reassigned and flown directly to another randomly occurring initial attack fire. Airtanker system planning that means to incorporate this fire-to-fire transfer activity needs information about the flight distance between these randomly located fires. Moments of the distance distribution, derived in this article, can be used to characterize and evaluate fire-to-fire airtanker dispatch within and between protection areas. A hypothetical example illustrates how a proposed change in an airtanker protection zone can affect not only airbase-to-fire flight distance but also fire-to-fire flight distance. In this example, the expected airbase-to-fire distance and the expected total transfer-flight distance are both significantly reduced, but at the same time, somewhat unexpectedly, the average fire-to-fire flight distance actually increases. The discovery and quantification of such unanticipated results can potentially influence airtanker system design. These key system design parameters can now be obtained through the exceedingly fast and accurate analytical methods presented here.

AbstractAdvanced, direct thermal energy conversion technologies are receiving increased research attention in order to recover waste thermal energy in advanced vehicles and industrial processes. Advanced thermoelectric (TE) systems necessarily require integrated system-level analyses to establish accurate optimum system designs. Past system-level design and analysis has relied on well-defined deterministic input parameters even though many critically important environmental and system design parameters in the above mentioned applications are often randomly variable, sometimes according to complex relationships, rather than discrete, well-known deterministic variables. This work describes new research and development creating techniques and capabilities for probabilistic design and analysis of advanced TE power generation systems to quantify the effects of randomly uncertain design inputs in determining more robust optimum TE system designs and expected outputs. Selected case studies involving stochastic TE .material properties demonstrate key stochastic material impacts on power, optimum TE area, specific power, and power flux in the TE design optimization process. Magnitudes and directions of these design modifications are quantified for selected TE system design analysis cases.

Mathematical model and computer programs have been developed for the analysis of the economic performance of a terrestrial solar power system using heat engines. Various combinations of cycle, collector, engine, storage system, and sink have been studied and the influence of design parameters on power costs examined for both the steady and unsteady state cases. Typical minimum power costs under central Australian conditions for units of 12 kw capacity at current levels of materials and labor costs range from 7 to 47 U. S. cents per kwh, according to the specific design of installation.

This paper studies marine structures made of steels and light alloys and exposed to cyclic operational loads. Stress-strain parameters of their joints were taken from mathematical simulations of loads and strains or from actual strain gauging data. The aim of this study is to develop recommendations on fatigue strength calculations: specifically, how to quite the complex mathematical model of multi-axial loading at critical structural points with fast fatigue wear in favour of a simplified stressstrain state description based on optimal assignment of design parameters (stresses) in fatigue failure criteria. Preferability of this approach depends on case-specific requirements to calculation accuracy and timeframes. Uniaxial description of stressed state instead of the three-axial one enables much faster calculation with acceptable drop in accuracy.

This paper proposes a new bed stage for patients in ambulance vehicle in order to improve ride quality in term of vibration control. The vibration of patient compartment in ambulance can cause a secondary damage to a patient and a difficulty for a doctor to perform emergency care. The bed stage is to solve vertical, rolling, and pitching vibration in patient compartment of ambulance. Four MR (magneto-rheological) dampers are equipped for vibration isolation of the stage. Firstly, a mathematical model of stage is derived followed by the measurement of vibration level of patient compartment of real ambulance vehicle. Then, the design parameters of bed stage is undertaken via computer simulation. Skyhook, PID and LQR controllers are used for vibration control and their control performances are compared.

The multi-facet drill shows good performance during materials are difficultly machined. However, for a new type of the drilling point, the grinding has been the main problem that restricts its application. To properly grinding the drill point confirms the design parameters, the relationship between design parameters and grinding parameters must be resolved. The mathematical model is the key to solve this problem. In this paper, according to the design of the high manganese steel drilling tool, a mathematical model has been established by the plane grinding method to solve grinding parameters, and to achieve improved mechanical grinding of drill point.
