The aim of the present study was to evaluate the response of different doses and sources of nitrogen (N) on agronomic characteristics in upland riceas well astheclimaticand environmentalinfluence on nitrogen fertilization results. Theexperiments were conducted in the University of Lavras, during 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 crop seasons, the plots consisted of 4 lines of 3 linear meters, with spacing among rows of 35 cm and a useful plot of 4.2 m2. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications in a 4x4x 2factorial design. The factor doseconsisted in 0, 50,100 e 200 kg ha-1N and the factor sourcesconsisted in ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, urea and polycote, totaling 16 treatments. The characteristics evaluatedwere plant height, grain yield, grain chalkness, 1000 grainsweight andyield. It was concluded that the addiction of doses and Nsources didnot change the agronomic performanceof the upland rice crop. There is an influence of the environment on the responses of plants to nitrogen application, being observed different results in different cropseasons.

This research involved ninety-six S1 maize lines with the opaque-2 gene that carne from populations 63 (26 lines), 65 (12 lines), and 68 (58 lines) from the CIMMYT maize breeding programo The S1 lines selected in the laboratory because of their high lysine content were crossed with five testers that had a different genetic base: a synthetic variety, two early lines derived from this variety, and two single intermediate crosses of normal performance. The test crosses were evaluated and compared with five control s (two commercial and three experimental hybrids) using a randomized complete block design in two sites in Mexico during 1992. The objecti ves of this research were to select SI lines in early generations according to their agronomic performance, grain lysine content, and GCA grain yield, and to compare testers' efficiency in discriminating S1 lines. On average, the SI lines of population 63 showed a greater grain yield as compared to that of populations 65 and 68 combined with all testers, except in the case of the synthetic tester YS- 201-M. A line from population 65 combined with tester B3 x B5 showed the highest grain yield (10,23 t ha-I), representing a superiority of 4% above the best commercial hybrid, AN- 447. A total ofthirty-one Sllines were selected based on their agronomic attributes and grain yield: 13, 14, and 4 from populations 63, 65 and 68 respectively]. Tester B3 x B5 tumed out to be the best line discriminator according to the following criteria: grain yield, percentage of ears damaged by Fusarium spp., and number of rotten ears.

For upland rice, it is desired, among many objectives, to obtain highly productive and early genotypes, consequently reducing the risk of establishing a crop regarding climatic adversities. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the correlation between the agronomic traits days to flowering and grain yield of 14 upland rice lines. The experiment was conducted in seven environments, in the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 crop years, in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Both the genotypic and phenotypic correlation were significant and positive, whereas the genotype correlation was superior to the phenotype. However, it was noted a low magnitude of the correlation values. It was concluded that a favorable and simultaneous selection is possible for high grain yield and plants with early blossoming cycle in upland rice.

Maize inoculation with bacteria of the genus Azospirillum can reduce the consumption of nitrogen fertilizers to obtain maximum grain yield. In this context, the aim was to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense associated with nitrogen fertilization on the maize agronomic performance. A randomized block design was used in a split-plot scheme with four replicates. Four inoculation managements with Azospirillum brasilense (T0 - control without inoculation; TC2 - seed box inoculation, 200x108 viable cells ha-1; TC3 - seed box inoculation, 400x108 viable cells ha-1; TS1 - previous inoculation of the seeds, 600x108 viable cells ha-1) associated with four top-dressing N doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1), applied at maize stage V6 by urea. Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense associated with top-dressing nitrogen fertilization increases the number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row, number of grains per ear and grain yield of maize, mainly due to its positive effects on plant nutrition. Managements with seed box inoculation with 400x108 viable cells per ha (TC3) and inoculation in seed pre-treatment (TS1) are the most recommended for maize.

ABSTRACT In rice, the use of the bacterium Azospirillum brasilense has shown to be very useful for the crop, being able to increase the final productivity of the same or reduce the need for nitrogen in topdressing. It has recently been noted that there are other regulators that perform other functions, such as thidiazuron (TDZ), a cytokinin-like substance that has been shown to significantly increase upland rice productivity. Thus, the present work aimed to verify the effect of the interaction between the foliar application of A. brasilense and thidiazuron doses applied at the occasion of the tillering of the plants on the productive aspects and crop productivity. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural years of 2015/16 and 2016/17, at the UNESP Teaching, Research and Extension Farm belonging to the Engineering Faculty of Ilha Solteira - UNESP, located in the municipality of Selvíria, MS. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 4 factorial scheme with four replicates. The treatments were the combination of the presence or absence of A. brasilense foliar application with doses of TDZ (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g ha-1) applied to upland rice cultivar BRS Esmeralda. Based on the results obtained for plant height, number of panicles per square meter, total number of grains and fertility of spikelets, mass of 100 grains and grain yield, it was concluded that, in the two agricultural years observed, there were no interaction and individual effects of the foliar application of the bacteria, and of the TDZ doses used at the time of tillering in the BRS Esmeralda cultivar.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of forage sorghum when intercropped with piatã grass and cultivated in eucalyptus sub-forest. The experiment was carried out at the Embrapa Gado de Corte, in Campo Grande - MS. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The main treatments were: monoculture (single sorghum); intercropping (simultaneous sowing of sorghum + piatã grass). The secondary treatments were composed by the sampling sites, with five sites equidistant between the rows of eucalyptus trees (CLFI), with full sun as a control (CLI). The percentage of shading was always higher than 30% in the sub-forest, and the overall average of the system with 63% shade, even after 50% thinning of eucalyptus trees. The intercropping with the grass, an interesting fact, did not affect sorghum grain yield, since it validates the potential of forage sorghum for use in intercropping with perennial grasses, with average grain yield of 2,404.63 kg ha-1. Regarding the sampling sites, it was observed a higher yield in the full sun with 3,283 kg ha-1. The weight of 100 grains was higher for sorghum in monoculture. On the other hand, the upper W1000 was observed at sites A and C. The weight of 1000 grains is considered stable, being affected only under conditions of stress during grain formation. The sorghum intercropped with the piatã grass did not influence the harvest index (HI), while in the shaded environment there was an increase in the harvest index in relation to the full sun.

The aim of the present study was to compare the selection performed by the sum of standardized variables index (Z Index) with the selection based only on the grain yield character, to verify if the grain yield alone is a good alternative for the selection involving multiple characters. The experiments were conducted in Lavras-MG and in Lambari-MG, during the 2015/2016 agricultural year. The used design was the randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Thirty-six genotypes of the preliminary trial of upland rice breeding program of the Federal University of Lavras were evaluated. In order to compose the Z index, the following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield, height, number of days for flowering, 1000-grain weight, income, yield, leaf blast incidence, and grain length/width ratio. Z index was efficient in the selection for multiple characters whereas not all lines with the highest grain yield obtained good results in the other desirable characteristics, indicating that the selection based only on grain yield is not efficient when working with several characters of interest in upland rice cultivation.

The research was conducted in Tamanbogo Station Research in the 2007 Rainy Season in upland rice-corn intercropping farming. The research design used Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were 1). 15 t ha-1 manures + Residues of rock phosphate (RRP),  2). Without manures + RRP, 3). 15 t ha-1 manures + 150 kg  ha-1 SP 36 and  4). Without manures + 150 kg ha-1 SP 36. The upland rice was seeded in planting space of 25 cm x 25 cm, 2-3 seeds/hill. The land was treated with 1 t ha-1 of RP in the last farming year while SP36 was applicated each season. Urea and KCl fertilizers that were used on upland rice were 300 kg ha-1 and 100 kg ha-1, respectively while corns were fertilized with 250 kg ha-1 urea and 100 kg KCl ha-1. The research results showed that the availability of N and K nutrients in the soil at the time of before planting was low but the availability P was high. Application of manures and RRP increased C-organic, availability of P , Ca and  Cation Exchangeable Capacity in the soil. Application of 15 t ha-1 of manures with RRP increased dry biomass weight of rice and corn, there were 45.17 % and 49.23 %, respectively. The grain yield of rice and corn on the treatment of manures and RRP were not gave significant different compare to the yield was gained with SP 36  fertilizer.

Field experiments were conducted to assess the effect of time of introduction of maize and cropping pattern on two varieties of soybean in a soybean/maize intercrop in 2007 and 2008 seasons at the University of Agriculture Makurdi. Three periods of introduction of maize were evaluated: (i) planting at the same time with soybean;(ii) introduction of maize two weeks after planting soybean and (iii) introduction of maize four weeks after planting soybean. There were five cropping patterns viz: (i) soybean variety Samsoy-2 planted sole (ii) soybean variety TGX 1448-2E planted sole (iii) maize variety DMR-ESR-Y planted sole (iv) Samsoy -2 intercrop with maize and (v) TGX1448-2E intercrop with maize. The experiment was a split plot laid on complete randomized block design replicated three times. Results obtained revealed that there was no significant effect of time of introduction of maize on any soybean parameter observed. Yield and yield components of soybean indicated significant effect of cropping pattern (P<0.01) with number of pods per plant and grain yield. Grain yield and number of pods per plant decreased in intercrop with soybean variety Samsoy-2 having the highest number of pods per plant and grain yield. The result on maize indicated that maize planted sole was significantly (P<0.01) taller than intercropped maize, there was significant (P<0.01) effect of time of introduction of maize and cropping pattern on maize plant height, ear length, ear diameter, survival and barrenness percentage and grain yield. The Land Equivalent ratio (LER) values indicated that higher yield advantages were obtained from maize introduced two weeks after planting soybean and maize intercropped with soybean variety Samsoy-2 (1.35) than with soybean variety TGX1448-2E (1.12).

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of isolated or combined roots and straw of black oat and wheat, as previous crops in autumn/winter, on the performance of soybean in succession. The experiment was carried out in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The following seven treatments were applied in the autumn/winter of 2017 and 2018, before soybean planting: fallow; straw of black oat or wheat, distributed on plots kept under fallow during autumn/winter, without roots; plots only with roots of black oat or wheat, without straw; and plots with straw and roots of black oat or wheat. Soybean crop performance was estimated using the following variables: plant density, leaf area index, soil plant analysis development (SPAD) index, shoot dry matter, grain yield, and yield components. In comparison with fallow, the cultivation of black oat or wheat, as previous crops during the autumn/winter, increases soybean grain yield. The impact of the roots of black oat or wheat on soybean yield is similar to that of straw. Soybean agronomic performance is improved in the combined presence of roots and straw of black oat or wheat.

Alley cropping or hedgerow intercropping is one of the many sub-systems of agroforestry technology. A 5 x 3 factorial experiment in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications was used to determine the effect of four alley woody species and three plantain cultivars on the yield of ITA 331 upland rice grain in the 2017 and 2018 farming seasons. The Alley species, plantain  cultivars and Alley species x plantain cultivars treatment interactions showed no significant effects (p>0.05) on ITA 331 upland rice grain yield. Student t-test on the two farming seasons showed significant increase in yield of ITA 331 upland rice grain in 2018 than in 2017. The non-significantly different rice grain yield in the alley species treatment plots could be due to the generally high nutrient release of the decomposed legume-based alley species. Agroforestry combination of alley plants species and plantain cultivars is suitable for ITA 331 upland rice production. Key words: alley cropping, yield, ITA 331 upland rice grain, alley woody species, plantain cultivars
