Recent advances in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) can significantly affect technology-enhanced educational contexts. Our evolving relationship technology is a challenging topic of investigation, but alternative theories to cognition and socially aware empirical studies can shed light on the subject. In this paper, we explore "The Magic of Science" workshop, conducted in an educational museum context. With a background on learning through action and enactivism, our objective is to observe how people can individually and socially experience pervasive digital technology in educational contexts. Our study included 15 participant children and adolescents, who explored an exhibit of three interactive artworks and then built an interactive artifact from scratch during the workshop. We observed how these interactions took place and collected feedback on the experience of the workshop. Our results indicate that new ways of interacting with pervasive technologies allow us to expand the concept of learning through action, towards learning through socioenaction.

The emerging of digital technology not only encourages the development of new tools but also changes traditional approaches to solving emerging problems. The sound, music, art, colors, etc. that prevailed in the 20th-century forms of therapy are being replaced by integrated systems that overcome many of these forms, thanks to digital technology. With the increasing number of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the world, such systems provide new opportunities for the treatment of these disorders. In this research, the creation of such a system has been chosen as the object of work. The article presents an interactive tool for the education of children with ASD created by audio, video, and computer technologies and assesses its potential impact. The experimental research and its results are presented. This study aims to evaluate an interactive instrument developed for the education of such children. Following the objectives of ensuring the interactivity of the process, provoking all the perceptions of the subject, and developing the subject's ability to respond to the environment, a personalized audiovisual environment was created. For interactivity, the virtual program EyeCon, Webcam and camcorders, video projector, and speaker system were used. The study was conducted with one subject and a case study method was used. The impact of the instrument was established based on a survey of the parents of the child and the findings of childcare experts. The results of the study demonstrated the positive benefits for this child such as increased eye-to-hand coordination, concentration duration, improved communication, and emotional expression. The results obtained show that such interactive multi-sensory environments in special and general education schools can be a supplemental tool for traditional methods.

Researchers in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) have long developed technologies for older adults. Recently, researchers are engaging in critical reflections of these approaches. IoT for aging in place is one area around which these conflicting discourses have converged, likely in part driven by government and industry interest. This article introduces diffractive analysis as an approach that examines difference to yield new empirical understandings about our methods and the topics we study. We constructed three analyses of a dataset collected at an IoT design workshop and then conducted a diffractive analysis. We present themes from this analysis regarding the ways that participants are inscribed in our research, considerations related to transferability and novelty between work centered on older adults and other work, and insights about methodologies. Our discussion contributes implications for researchers to form teams and account for their roles in research, as well as recommendations how diffractive analysis can support other research agendas.

This paper focuses on the intensifying use of the fake reflexive resultative construction,as demonstrated in the example Hij lacht zich een breuk om die mop (tit. 'He laughs himselfa fracture because of that joke'). Although the literal use of the (English) fake reflexiveresultative construction has been the subject of several studies, scant attention hasbeen paid to the potential of this construction for conveying an intensifying meaning,though these intensifying uses show an intriguing mix of productivity and lexical idiosyncrasythat deserves careful analysis. This case study will zoom in on the use of theintensifying fake reflexive resultative construction in present-day Belgian and NetherlandicDutch. The analysis will reveal some discrepancies between two national variants ofDutch and shed light on the development of subschemas displaying various degrees ofproductivity on the one hand and the possible lexicalisation of strong combinations on theother.

Through the lens of liminality, this article considers the identity work engaged in by managers working at the boundary of the organization. Liminality has been used to shed light on the ambiguous positions of temporary employees, consultants and project teams. As such, the concept has become synonymous with temporary, transient or precarious work settings. However, in this article I consider the efforts that managers make to set up and co-create the support structure they require to enter into and leave liminal experiences. I draw on a social anthropology to reconsider the movements between these ‘in’ and ‘out’ phases, and introduce two kinds of enabling roles: guide and ally. Through the use of a longitudinal case study research design the article contributes to the delineation between transitory and perpetual liminality, to include the notion of temporary incorporation. In distinguishing temporary incorporation from perpetual liminality, we can shift attention towards the possibilities of incremental learning in limen, where the subject and the context remain subject to change.

Italian anti-fascists started to emigrate from the moment that Mussolini seized power. These émigrés, or fuorusciti, tried to organise themselves to put an end to Mussolini’s regime, but found themselves confronting a number of unexpected difficulties in their host countries. Among them, Giustiza e Libertà (GL) was one of the most active organisations. One of the problems they had to face was the issue of how best to deal with their hosts without compromising their integrity as Italians, and as patriots. The case of Paolo Vittorelli (Raffaele Battino), who is the subject of this article, presents a clear case study of this issue and shows how close collaboration between Italian anti-fascists and western democracies (in this case, the United Kingdom) was hindered by ideological problems. The study of such episodes helps us to shed light not only on the mentality of the GL émigrés, but also on the way the Italian Resistance would later approach the issue of working together with the Allies during the Italian campaign of 1943–1945.

This report looks at the research trends over the years 1989 — 2004 as published in the International Journal of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Over this time period, there has been a concerned focus by scholars and practitioners to bring issues such as interface design, usability engineering, human information processing, and user-centric system development into the mainstream consciousness of engineers and developers. Our research aims to provide information to both scholars and developers on the past and current trends in the growing field of HCI. Using the PsycINFO journal database, we compiled an extensive Excel workbook containing relevant information on all the articles appearing in the journal since its inception. We were then able to classify each document using the ACM SIGCHI taxonomy, developed by Hewett, et al. This taxonomy permits classification of articles based on six factors, within one of 17 possible categories. Several other dimensions were examined including year & period of publication (1989–1993; 1994–1999; 2000–2004), author affiliation, geographic location, number of empirical studies per paper, and average sample size per study. We also reported the classifications of each article as reported by PsycINFO. Besides noting the clear growth in the total number of articles published each period, our results indicate that the field of Human Computer Interaction has seen changes in research focus. Current trends point to an increase in research focusing on developmental processes, usability evaluation methods, human communication and interaction, and applications. Another trend shows a notable decrease in empirical studies using human participants over the 15-year period.

FEATURE AT A GLANCE: In this article, we examine the interplay between electronic voting technology machine types (touchscreen vs. touchscreen + keypad) and ballot designs (full ballot vs. one office per page) that together comprise the interface to which voters are exposed. Using a gerontological approach, we show that determining the most usable system for voters with the most limited capabilities (in this study, older participants) also corresponded to higher performance across groups (younger participants). Because older adults are more sensitive to slight differences in human-computer interaction designs, examining their performance may help shed light on potential problems that could otherwise go undetected.

Technological artifacts, physical and digital, have occupied an increasing space in society. Through these artifacts, individuals’ access, store and share information, which may be spread across different equipment. On the other hand, through human-computer interaction, individuals use and appropriate this equipment, creating an ecology of artifacts that appears to be able to expand the physical and mental capacities of its users. In turn, the aforementioned expansion of capabilities seems to contribute to changes in the informational behavior of users of artifact ecologies during practices such as personal information management, the passage from information to knowledge, and the management of personal knowledge. However, there seems to be little literature relating concepts such as human-computer interaction through the use or appropriation of an artifact ecology, with informational behavior, and the aforementioned management of information and personal knowledge. This scarcity reduces the information available, the understanding of these relationships, and their action on the individual. That said, this work will start from a brief systematic review of the literature, to learn about recent works developed on the subject investigated. Afterward, the recovered literature will be confronted with each other, to find relationships between the concepts. The results obtained from this confrontation will contribute to informing other investigations related to the appropriation of artifact ecologies, for information management practices and personal knowledge.
