There is a consensus among scholars and practitioners that energy solutions, such as electricity services and related products and systems, are paramount to the ability of nations to overcome environmental and social issues. As a result, policymakers and problem solvers in emerging economies have shown a keen interest in the transition to sustainable energy systems. Nevertheless, the design of sustainable energy solutions in low-income markets presents many challenges, such as those related to limited financial resources and poor infrastructure. In low-income markets, the adoption of a systems-oriented approach to product–service combinations may represent a promising alternative to traditional design approaches and result in a more socially and environmentally sound path to economic development. Building on design theory grounded in systems theory, this paper analyzes multiple aggregation levels of the sociotechnical system of a low-income energy efficiency program in Brazil. In this study, the authors examined findings from the literature, carried out field observations, and had discussions with practitioners and experts. The study identifies constraints that hinder energy solutions that could achieve higher levels of socioeconomic and environmental benefits in low-income energy markets. Based on the findings, the paper provides insights into sustainable energy transitions and concludes that low-income energy efficiency programs can be improved through design-led policy and stakeholder collaboration.

Population growth and city expansion in developing countries require traditional urban planning practices to be transformed in order to tackle climate change and follow Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agendas. Almost every expert in the urban sector believes that future cities should be sustainable, smart, and environmentally friendly, where energy is one of the most critical factors to achieve these goals. They also agree that smart and sustainable energy provision for cities requires a comprehensive and responsive legal and policy framework to be in place at the national level. However, this research’s findings reveal a lack of such frameworks for this group of countries. Considering the challenges and unique nature of Low-Income-Developing (LID) countries, there should be a framework based on the realities in these countries. In this research, key challenges of urban and energy sectors of LID countries, specifically Afghanistan, are identified, and a framework for the integration of sustainable and smart energy in the urban planning processes for LID countries is proposed. To make it easily replicable and adaptable for LID countries, the proposed framework is studied and analyzed around Afghanistan’s urban and energy sectors. This is one of the few frameworks of its kind for LID economies to the best of the authors’ knowledge. This framework lays a solid foundation for sustainable and smart energy integration in the urban planning process of developing countries. This study highlights that sustainable and smart energy systems could ensure climate change mitigation and economic growth enhancement but require close cross-sectoral coordination and policy maker’s commitments and involvement. This research will help many existing and emerging cities in the LID countries’ worldwide use and benefit from the proposed framework in their urban planning processes. It also enables policymakers, urban planners and designers, municipalities leadership, and other stakeholders of the urban, energy, and environment sectors to work together and make smart and rational decisions for the future of their cities and lead them towards smart and sustainable cities.


Clean and affordable supply of energy is one of the goals among the 17 sustainable development goals. In developing nations like India the fast development in clean and sustainable energy would allow creating evaluation of the Integrated Sustainable Energy Model scenarios in the context of energy a win-win situation for ensuring the rural energy security, mitigating the impact of rising fossil-fuel cost on the economy and avoid the negative implications of exhausting natural resources and ensure the rural energy security. Therefore, there is substantial scope for the exploitation of renewable energy technologies in bridging this gap by providing affordable and clean energy to the poor to meet their lighting, cooking, and thermal needs. The huge potential for the renewable energy mainly lies in local projects, so there’s need to adopt bottomup energy modelling approaches. Energy modelling at block level is highly influential rather than modelling for one village as the block consists of approximately 80-90 villages. Hence the current study emphasizes on energy planning and scenarios modelling for Gadhinglaj block which consists of 93 villages using LongRange Energy Alternatives Planning system (LEAP) tool. The main objective of the study is to develop Integrated Sustainable Energy Model scenarios for Gadhinglaj block also requirement, Social cost and benefit, and their environmental impact. Survey method is used to collect the data. The main output of this research is the development of alternative renewable energy options under different conditions for Gadhinglaj up to 2030.
