There appears to be a continuing and inconclusive debate amongst scholars whether theoretical knowledge or practical experience is more important in related and associated areas such as education, recruitment and employability. This research, limited to a literature review and face to face interviews, conducted a systematic investigation to obtain and analyze valid and reliable research data to establish whether theoretical knowledge or practical experience are of paramount importance. The outcome of this research suggests that a hybrid approach should be adopted, with the major focus being on practical experience supported by relevant theoretical knowledge and not the converse. A number of additional recommendations are presented how to balance and close the gap between theory and practice including a redesign of ordinary and advanced level educational teaching. Far greater emphasis needs to be placed on young people gaining early practical experience inside and outside the classroom. This can be achieved by developing practical workshops (pilot studies) for use in safe laboratory-type environments and by extending work placements within organizations during term times.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct and indirect effects of information and communication technology (ICT) on a hybrid lean-agile supply chain performance (HSCP) in terms of leanness, agility and leagility of automotive supply chains (SCs) in Egypt. A conceptual framework was proposed and tested using questionnaires, which were filled through face-to-face interviews. A mixed-methods approach was used to achieve a comprehensive understanding of research relationships. The population was 101 international organizations in Egyptian automotive industry within its three sub-sectors (manufacturers of auto-feeding and automotive industries and distributors). Structural equation modelling was used to examine the proposed relationships. Results indicated that ICT positively/significantly affects both SC integration (SCI) and HSCP. SCI positively/significantly affects SC information sharing (SCIS). SCIS affects HSCP in terms of mass customization and postponement positively/significantly. The three sub-sectors are using a new blended SC strategy that hybridizes attributes of each approach according to the SC node’s position. This article adds value to the current debate on the applicability of implementing a blended lean-agile SC strategy by integrating two main lines of management research (leagility approach and hybridized lean-agile manufacturing systems) into one new hybrid approach. It is the first study that investigated empirically the direct/indirect ICT–HSCP relationships of multiple nodes in a heterogeneous market. It maps the hierarchical auto SCs of an emerging market. It provides automotive SC players with practical insights on using ICT for better SCI and SCIS and choosing the appropriate aspects of leanness, agility and leagility based on the organization’s position across its SC.

In this study, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars participated in a hybrid, multi-institutional workshop series about course design. Trainees developed college courses based on their research expertise, posting works-in-progress to a shared, online drive for peer review and collaboration. Learners also met weekly with local facilitators at their institution. The program led to similar learning outcomes as when the program was previously run in a face-to-face only format at one institution. However, the multi-institutional design led to additional benefits, especially for leaders at each institution, who described a rich learning community in their collaborative work.

The purpose is to analyze the influence of gender on touching behaviour in a mixed dyad within romantic media discourse. The comparative study demonstrates new insights into gender-neutral and gender-specific touch cues initiated by strangers in face-to-face romantic encounters. Methods. A hybrid approach (inductive and deductive) to thematic analysis was used to interpret codes of nonverbal immediacy cues. The thematic analysis covered six stages of the coding process resulted in deriving a codebook. Qualitative interactive sociolinguistic and quantitative analyses, as well as a method of statistical evaluation of hypotheses (Pearson’s chi-square test), were used to reveal the statistical evidence for touch cues functioning.Results. The sample consisted of 24 groups of touching behaviour, which included 557 feminine and 302 masculine touch cues. The identified nonverbal cues were grouped according to the focus of the object: self-focused (eight groups) and other person focused (sixteen groups). According to the results of the study, the expected gender differences were partially supported, considering the extent of the effect size. Gender-neutral touching behaviour includes eleven groups: four groups of self-focused (clothes straightening, holding hands in front of one’s body, hair grooming, holding hands behind one’s back) and seven groups of other person focused (hugs, hand-in-hand, handshake, kiss on the cheek, clap, dancing, arm link). Thirteen groups of touching behaviour were found to be gender-specific: four self-focused (clap – initiated only by men; hand(s) on the heart, face covering, lower lip biting – initiated only by women) and nine other person focused (hand kiss, lifting up a woman, selfie – initiated only by men; conversely, caress, kiss on lips, couple rubbing noses, shoulder massage, feeding a partner with one’s fingers, jumping into partner’s arms – initiated only by women).Conclusions. Comparative analysis of touching behaviour revealed that women tended to communicate the immediacy through hand-in-hand (φ = 0.35), hair grooming (φ = 0.28), hugs (φ = 0.23), holding hands in front of one’s body (φ = 0.18), pat (φ = 0.12), hand(s) on the heart, and face covering; while men were predisposed to use clothes straightening (φ = 0.1) and hand kiss; handshake and kiss on the cheek were initiated similarly by both genders. The obtained data are a prerequisite for further analysis of nonverbal behaviour initiated by opposite-sex strangers in the contemporary media dating context.Key words: nonverbal communication, face-to-face encounters, initiating romantic relationship, media context, dating culture, reality dating show, interpersonal interaction. Background Health related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with hematological malignancies (HMs) is greatly affected by the disease and the treatment and this has not been captured in a systematic manner in routine clinical practice. A systematic review of the HRQoL issues and instruments used in HM showed gaps between what is important to patients and what is being measured. The aims of this study were to develop and validate an instrument for measuring the impact of HMs and their treatment on patients' HRQoL and symptoms in daily clinical practice. Methods A multicentre Ethics approval was obtained from the National Research Ethics Service (NRES) of South West Bristols, UK. Adult patients with HM as per 2016 Revised WHO classification, capable of reading English and able to give written informed consent, were recruited from inpatient/outpatient clinics of seven secondary care hospitals in England and Wales for all phases of the study (Table 1). The qualitative study employed semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The generated items were then discussed in data definition panel meeting for inclusion in the prototype version of the new instrument. The content validation was followed by item reduction phase where number of items were reduced to more confined set of items. The version of HM-PRO developed after exploratory factory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis was used to perform Rasch modeling. In next step for demonstrating validity of the HM-PRO, construct and convergent/divergent validity was studied. The score banding was developed and MCID was established. Results Face-to-face interviews were performed in 129 patients. The content analysis of the transcribed interviews resulted in a comprehensive item pool. The generated items included in the prototype HM-PRO, were 34 items for impact on HRQoL category (Part A) and 23 items representing disease signs and symptoms (Part B). The version after exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was used to perform Rasch modeling in 182 patients resulting in 24 items in Part A and 18 items in Part B. The reliability testing (n=150) showed strong stability of measurement with Cronbach's alpha estimates of the HM-PRO for both assessment points (t1 and t2) above 0.9 for Part A, and above 0.8 for Part B. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for four domains of Part A was 0.85 - 0.91 and >0.8 for the overall scores of Part A and Part B, for all ten diagnoses, confirming strong reliability of the HM-PRO. Construct and convergent/divergent validity were studied in 905 cases. The HM-PRO scores correlated with scores of EORTC QLQ-C30 and FACT-G, both at the scale and at individual item levels. The univariate regression analysis confirmed a strong relationship between the HM-PRO and the other two measures. For the majority of regression models, the HM-PRO domains and individual items explained more than 50% of the variance in domain and item scores of EORTC QLQ-C30 and FACT-G, confirming the construct validity. The responsiveness testing (n=299) showed that HM-PRO is responsive to small but clinically important change in patients' HRQoL. The score banding was developed for the HM-PRO for its interpretability in to day-to-day clinical practice. The MCID for Part A based on standard error of mean was 6.2 and for PART B 5.9 points. It therefore was prudent, for practical reasons, to propose MCID of '6' for the HM-PRO. Conclusion This study provides evidence of the value of HM-PRO through content validity, reliability, construct validity, responsiveness and interpretability. The current research has developed and validated the English version of the HM-PRO. Further studies are being carried out to validate the instrument in several global languages for cross-cultural adaptation. Furthermore, the Acute Leukaemia Advocates Network (ALAN) is using the HM-PRO in a multi-country survey including five European (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish) and five non-European countries (Chinese, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese, Russian) to generate data in order to understand the impact of the disease and treatment on patients with different types of leukaemia. The data collected from this survey will be used to further validate the HM-PRO specifically in patients with leukaemia and potentially improve management of patients and their treatment. The HM-PRO has good potential to be widely used in daily clinical practice as well as in hemato-oncology clinical trials. Promoting pupils’ face-to-face promotive interaction (FtFPI) is crucial for effective cooperative learning (CL) in group work. This article provides insight into interpersonal behaviour and supportive communication as two important aspects of FtFPI. Sixteen pupils 9–10 years of age were videotaped in four structured mixed-ability groups during CL sessions at two primary schools in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The features of FtFPI that pupils use for peer support in small CL groups and on interfering factors that pupils encounter during FtFPI were analysed using a thematic hybrid approach. The study found that pupils used verbal and non-verbal features for co-learners’ responsive actions during FtFPI. However, the findings also revealed some factors that interfere with the pupils’ FtFPI, such as having insufficient knowledge and personal skills about peer attention, encouragement and praising. The study recommends that future studies should implement the intervention necessary to foster both teachers’ and pupils’ understanding and functional knowledge of FtFPI for successful small CL groups.

The global pandemic COVID-19 has forced traditional teaching pedagogies to meet the new educational demands such as remote learning. The safety measures and regulations of COVID-19, such as social distancing, have challenged all facets of education to transform their pedagogical strategies to mitigate the spread of the pandemic, but the rate has been slow to catch up the lost learning time in Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE). This study, underpinned in critical emancipatory research, responded to two questions: what are the challenges of ECCE in the context of COVID-19 and how ECCE could adapt ways of promoting transformative pedagogical strategies. This article underpins the notion that ECCE practitioners should be equipped with novel technology methodologies that replace traditional face-to-face teaching and learning. However, it is reasonable to believe that face-to-face teaching and learning will not be totally replaced by any other new methodology or fads; it will remain important for some years to come, especially in the lower level classes. A hybrid approach of using both the in-person and distance learning strategies for flexibility and manageability by both learners and practitioners seems promising at the moment. In short, this paper explores the challenges to explore promotion of pedagogical transformation strategies in ECCE, and offers some correctives because this will be an ongoing issue for years to come. There are no easy solutions to be packaged in fancy terminology. We argue that the early promotion of transformative pedagogical strategies will assist the children and make the practitioners’ work more flexible and understandable.

It has been suggested that the development of decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs) will lead to a paradigm shift in the way we perceive businesses. DAOs ostensibly eliminate agency costs due to the absence of a board of directors, automated governance mechanisms and transparency provided by the blockchain upon which the DAO is launched. This article undertakes a comparative analysis between DAOs and corporations and questions whether DAOs really do improve the corporate form. Using a corporate governance and legal realist lens, this article suggests that a number of the purported benefits of DAOs are overly simplified. Moreover, there are several practical and legal obstacles that technological advancements and improved engineering must overcome before DAOs become a viable, mainstream organisational structure. Balancing the inevitable improvement in technology against these significant obstacles, this article predicts an incremental integration of DAOs into society through a hybrid approach, involving interim legal solutions and varying degrees of automation and decentralisation.
