The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) was founded in 1551 in Lima, Peru, and for centuries has remained the major university in the country. But during the past several decades, a number of other universities, both public and private, have been created in Lima, and San Marcos now shares with them a space that, until the mid-twentieth century, was almost exclusively its own. Today, the rare book and manuscript collections within the library system are among the most important in the country. There has been an upswing in attention to South African biography in the past few decades, with a welcome trend towards remaking or revising the canon of important figures from the South African past. This has included edited collections of the works of prominent individuals, and notable among these have been early-twentieth century black African politicians and writers. Historical Publications Southern Africa (renamed from its previous moniker, the Van Riebeeck Society) has published four edited collections of the writings of such individuals since 2008, including Isaac Williams Wauchope, Richard Victor Solope Thema, and A.B. Xuma. A Life in Letters, a collection of Solomon T. Plaatje's correspondence, is the fourth such volume in just over a decade. There are 260 letters, written from 1896 to 1932, included in the book. Most are in English, but some are in Setswana, Dutch/Afrikaans, and a few are in German. Although a number of the letters are from the collections of the Cullen Library at the University of the Witwatersrand, the reviewer counted twenty-seven different collections across three continents. The book is thus an excellent resource not only for historians, but also for students and the general public who now have access to a wide range of Plaatje's thoughts, opinions, and emotions that are evident in his letters.

The aim of the article is to analyse the function of the list in the works of Georges Perec, a French writer of the second half of the twentieth century. Writing by enumeration was one of the most important literary strategies practiced by the author and it took various forms depending on the specific text. Enumeration in Perec’s work can thus be perceived as a mnemontechnical tool, thanks to which it becomes a way to force one's memory to remember what is forgotten. This mne-motechnical aspect will be particularly important in the literary project called Lieux où j’ai dormi. Simultaneously, the creation of literary lists and enumerations can be linked to author’s need to control his surrounding reality. From this perspective, the list gives the illusion of double control. On the one hand, it fights the obliteration of traces of the past, and on the other, by recording even the most trivial elements of the reality, it seems to be a way to consolidate it.

This chapter explores the conscious adoption, reformation, and indigenization of ballet in China in the mid-twentieth century to foreground how this historical development has contributed to the creation of a new genre of ballet unique to China in the contemporary period. Using The Red Detachment of Women (1964, [红色娘子军]) and the more recent Eight Heroines (2015, [八女投江]), the chapter highlights ballet’s contemporaneity in China at the convergence of the unique legacy of the sociopolitical reimagining of the form with tangible links to both the past and the present in ballet in the Global North as a modern transnational practice. It concludes that it is in its very divergence from the style of contemporary ballet more commonly performed in the West that Chinese contemporary ballet embodies the pluralistic cosmopolitan values that contemporary ballet adopts.

The 2001 launch of the fifth volume of theJames Stuart Archivereinforces this publication's reputation as a mother lode of primary evidence. TheArchive'sexistence is largely due to the efforts of two editors, Colin De B. Webb and John Wright, who transformed a tangle of notes into lucid text. They deciphered the interviews that Natal colonist James Stuart conducted with a range of informants, many of them elderly isiZulu-speaking men. Transcribed by Stuart between the 1890s and 1920s, these discussions often explored in vivid detail the customs, lore, and lineages of southern Africa. Although references to theArchiveabound in revisionist histories of southern Africa, few scholars have assessed how testimonies recorded by Stuart have critically influenced such pioneering research. Fewer still have incorporated the compelling views of early twentieth-century cultural change that Stuart's informants bring to a post-apartheid understanding of South Africa's past.Well before the University of Natal Press published volume 5, the evidence presented in theArchivehad already led scholars of South African history into fertile, unmarked terrain. One example of groundbreaking data can be found in the statements of volume 4's master interpreter of Zulu power, Ndukwana kaMbengwana. His observations of the past anchor recent studies that debunk myths surrounding the early-nineteenth-century expansion of Shaka's kingdom. Ever timely, the endnotes in volume 5 discuss these reappraisals of historical interpretation and methodology. Editor John Wright elaborates in his preface: “By the time we picked up work on volume 5, we were starting to take note … that oral histories should be seen less as stories containing a more or less fixed ‘core’ of facts than as fluid narratives whose content could vary widely.”

After the Rose Revolution, a process of transformation of the city begins. Very different public and private architectures from the past arise, while the strategies for the conservation of old Tbilisi are matter of discussion. To understand the factors that determine the creation of new urban spaces we first need to focus on two factors: the process of Institution Building that follows the Rose Revolution and the emergence of a political narrative that combines modernisation and nationalism. The hypothesis is that these two factors create the ground for developing the specific practices of transformation of the city and for the emergence of a new urban form.

This article describes the background behind and the process of the digitization of travel ephemera contained within the University of Guelph’s Scottish Studies Collection. Developed as an experiential learning opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of Guelph, this project explores the place that postcards held in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Scotland, the technologies involved with the printing and creation of postcards, their intended purpose, and what can be learned about Victorian, Edwardian, and postwar society based on postcard design, descriptions, and use. Through the creation of an Omeka online exhibit, those involved with this digitization project were able to share their analysis with the public, while making these materials digitally available for consultation and review.

In 2017–2020 The Center for Eastern European Studies of the University of Warsaw has published four voluminous volumes of the serial edition “Poles in Belarus” edited by the historian Tadeusz Gawin. The books reflect the results of a large-scale Polish-Belarusian scientific project, in the course of which Polish and Belarusian historians focused their attention on the problems of history that are urgent for both countries, first of all, of the twentieth century. In particular, separate volumes and scientific conferences preceding them were devoted to the Polish and Belarusian ideas of state independence in 1918–2018 and the military action of 1920 against the backdrop of political changes in the twentieth century. The uniqueness of the serial publication is that historians from Belarusian state universities and research institutes actively participated in it; this practice, in the context of a sharp deterioration in Polish-Belarusian political relations, has already become a thing of the past.

This article recounts the unusual fate of the artist-copyist Nicholas Lochoff. Lochoff, who lived most of his life abroad, in Italy, remains relatively unknown in his Russian homeland. Based on Russian and American historiography, and the periodical press, the author follows Lochoff ’s path from professional revolutionary to self-taught artist who became recognized as one of the leading copyists of the twentieth century. As research shows, the philanthropy of Helen Clay Frick enabled the University of Pittsburgh to acquire Lochoff ’s unclaimed copies of European masterpieces where they became an asset in educating future generations of American art historians.

Abstract: Narratives from four Canadian communication scholars describe the development of communication studies and journalism in Canada. The development of a discipline is best understood through the stories told about its growth. The story of the discipline of communication in Canada is traced with the narrative of the creation of programs at York University, the University of Calgary, the University of Saskatchewan, this journal, and the Journalism programs at the University of Western Ontario and Carleton University. A tribute to the seminal work of Earle Beattie in the creation of the Canadian Journal of Communication is provided. Résumé: Quatre chercheurs canadiens en communication racontent le développement des études en communication et en journalisme au Canada. La meilleure façon de comprendre le développement d'une discipline, c'est de raconter des histoires sur sa croissance. Cet article retrace donc l'histoire des communications en tant que discipline au Canada au moyen de narrations sur la création des programmes à York University, au University of Calgary et au University of Saskatchewan, celle de ce périodique-même, et celle de programmes en journalisme au University of Western Ontario et à Carleton University. En outre, l'article rend hommage au travail indispensable d'Earle Beattie dans la création du Journal canadien de la communication.

This article describes the rise of Venezuelan lawyers as members of the country's intellectual and social leadership, and their notable influence throughout different historic periods, from their key contribution to the consolidation of the country's political and intellectual leadership during the nineteenth century, to their emergence as power brokers bridging the public and private sectors during the economic and social expansions that took place during most of the twentieth century. This work also explains how, in spite of the radical political transition that took place in the late 1990s and which led to the disappearance of the traditional elites, the new regime created the conditions for the emergence of new networks in similar fashion to the ones that existed in the past, revealing that regardless of which particular social group is in power personal connections remain vital in making the justice system work, and the presence of lawyers is very important.
