The aim of this study was to design and apply the measuring acquisition system, or a device for determining the limit values of eggshell strength using the puncture method. This study focused on class "M" eggs produced on a laying hen farm in the vicinity of Čаčak, and determined the external physical properties of egg quality: length, width, shape index and weight. In addition, the following eggshell properties were determined: weight, proportion, thickness, and puncture force. Average egg length was 58.05 mm, width 45.46 mm, and shape index 78.25. Average egg weight was 65.89 g, and the eggshell ratio 12.76% (8.44 g). Average eggshell thickness was 0.48 mm with a 4.69% coefficient of variation. Results showed that the tested eggs had uniform strength, with average value of the minimum shell puncture force 26.34 N, with a 0.95% coefficient of variation.

Egg quality parameter is important for determination of egg quality, grading of egg and pricing. To conduct this study, 50 eggs of Hy-line Brown, 50 eggs of ISA Brown, 50 eggs of Saver-579 Brown and 50 eggs of Novogen Brown and 50 eggs of Naked Neck were collected from different poultry farms of Sylhet. Egg shape index (ESI) of Hy-line Brown, ISA Brown, Saver-579, Novogen Brown and Naked Neck were 78.86±1.24, 78.85±0.5, 78.45±1.20, 81.43±1.56 and 76.85±0.92 respectively. Egg weight of Hy-line Brown, ISA Brown, Saver-579, Novogen Brown and Naked Neck were 62.48±1.54g, 61.89±1.2g, 61.41±1.47g, 64.76±1.37g and 37.45±1.2g respectively. Yolk weight of Hy-line Brown, ISA Brown, Saver-579, Novogen Brown and Naked Neck were 18.09±0.62g, 18.26±0.29g, 19.33±0.32g, 19.73±0.21g and 15.12±0.48g respectively. Among the different strains/breed, Novogen Brown has the highest value and Naked Neck has the lowest value for ESI, egg weight and yolk weight. So that the grading value of Novogen Brown has the highest among other strain/breed. Future research is necessary to see the internal egg quality parameter (albumen index, yolk index, Haugh Units (HU) and yolk colour) of different strain/breed, which will help for grading of egg. The efficiency of industrial poultry farming within the optimization of poultry technology, depends on the level of genetic potential of the flock. Selection features of Shaoxing ducks make this kind optimal for its breeding in the People's Republic of China. The study aims to evaluate the morphometric characteristics of Shaoxing duck eggs, which are bred on the breeding farm of Zhejiang Generation Biological Science and Technology Co., Ltd in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province, China. The weight, length, width of the eggs and the index of the egg shape have been determined. An individual method of counting the number of eggs laid by ducks of the Shaoxing breed for 4 adjacent months has been implemented. The average weight of the egg is 67.45 ± 0.22 g with limit values lim max = 89 g lim min = 45 g. The average value of egg length is 6.02 ± 0.01 cm, width – 4.45 ± 0.01 cm. The duck egg shape index is 74.01 ± 0.12. Thereby systematic individual studies of morphometric parameters of eggs will increase the effect of selection by expanding the indicators of lifelong assessment of the uterine population of ducks. Selection of queens for the breeding core of the breed according to the indicators of manufacturability of morphometric parameters of eggs will increase the incubation yield of ducklings and, accordingly, will be one of the effective mechanisms to ensure economic profitability of breeding Shaoxing ducks.

This paper presents results of determination of certain quality parameters and its phenotypic correlation in eggs originated from extensively reared gray variety of Guinea fowl. A total of 150 egg collected by sampling 30 eggs in each of five analyzed laying months were used for egg quality evaluation and statistical analysis by methods of descriptive statistics and simple linear correlation. Average egg weight, shape index and shell thickness was 38.14 g, 76.03% and 0.49 mm, respectively. Average shell, yolk and albumen weight was 5.83, 12.16 and 20.23 g, respectively, and its proportion was 15.23, 32.10 and 52.69%, respectively. Average values of yolk height, diameter, index and color were 16.54 mm, 39.95 mm, 41.50%, and 13.76, whereas values for albumen diameter, index and height as well Haugh units were 59.30 mm, 9.62%, 5.67 mm, and 82.58, respectively. Majority of examined quality parameters showed significant correlation with other parameters. Egg weight was positive correlated (p<0.01) with egg length (0.76) and width (0.92), shape index (0.22), shell thickness (0.60), shell weight (0.81) and proportion (0.44), albumen (0.92) and yolk weight (0.77) and yolk index (0.23), but in negative connection (p<0.01) with yolk proportion (-0.54), yolk/albumen ratio (-0.41) and albumen index (-0.25). Determined egg quality indicated good potential of this species in extensive rearing, which could be improved and used in more favorable rearing conditions.

Comparative study on egg production and hatchability characteristics in Nigerian local (NL; n=24), FUNAAB-α (F-α; n=24) and Transylvanian naked neck (TNN; n=24) chickens aged 25 weeks old was carried out for 4 weeks. Three hundred and sixty hatchable eggs each were used for quality characteristics determination and for incubation. F-α had significantly (P<0.001) higher egg production (90.3%) than TNN (76.9%) while TNN was higher than NL (58.3%). Egg weight (EWT), length, width and surface area, albumen height, weight, percentage and index, shell weight, color and internal quality unit (IQU) were significantly (P<0.001) affected by genotype. These followed the pattern: NL<F-α<TNN. F-α and TNN had significantly (P<0.001) higher values than NL in egg shape index, yolk weight, height and diameter. Yolk colour index was significantly (P<0.01) higher in TNN than in F-α. Yolk percentage and yolk-albumen ratio followed the pattern: NL>F-α>TNN. NL had (P<0.001) thicker and higher shell percentage (SP) than F-α and TNN. Higher Haugh unit (HU) was recorded in TNN than in NL and F-α. Fertility was significantly (P<0.05) higher in F-α than in TNN. Hatchability was not (P>0.05) affected by genotype. Chick weight and chick: egg ratio were significantly (P<0.001) by genotype. TNN had higher chick weight and yield than F-α and NL chicks. In conclusion, F-α laid more eggs than others, exhibited higher fertility with longer chicks at hatch. The comparison of physical quality properties of table eggs of commercial hybrid Tetra SL and two native indigenous breeds of hens, Banat Naked Neck and Svrljig hen, was performed in conditions of alternative production in the pasture system in portable cages without the floor. The experiment was conducted during the vegetation period, at the age of hens of 53-57 weeks. In order to produce good quality eggs, the diet was designed with a complete mixture based on maize and soybean. In addition, constant availability of pastures was ensured. Egg sampling was performed in the morning and the initial egg quality was examined based on egg weight, shape index, egg white, egg yolk and shell quality parameters. Layer hens of the commercial hybrid Tetra SL had significantly higher egg weight and better internal egg quality (p<0.01) compared to hens of Banat Naked Neck and Svrljig hens, except for the colour of the yolk, which was more intense in the same feeding and breeding conditions and the age of laying hens, in eggs of native breeds (p<0.01). Native breeds in relation to the commercial hybrid had lighter shell colour (p<0.01). Deformation and egg shell thickness differed (p<0.01) between all three genotypes. The determined rank of layer hen genotypes for shell thickness was: Tetra SL, Banat Naked Neck, Svrljig hen. However, the breaking force was without statistically confirmed difference between hen genotypes.

Abstract Present study was planned to determine variations in external and internal quality egg parameters of different avian species including ostrich Struthio camelus, ducks Anas platyrhynchos, chicken Gallus gallus, turkeys Meleagris gallopavo and grey francolin Francolinus pondicerinus. All the birds were kept under similar rearing conditions. A total of 150 eggs were collected for each species to record external features of these eggs. Statistically significant (p<0.05) variations were recorded in egg weight, egg length and egg width between ostrich, ducks, chicken, turkey and quail eggs. Significantly (p<0.05) higher egg weight, egg length and egg width was observed for ostrich eggs while the same was lowest for grey francolin eggs. Similarly, significantly (p<0.05) greater shape index and egg volume values were observed for ostrich eggs while lowest shape index values were recorded for turkey eggs and egg volume was lowest for grey francolin. Significantly, higher (p<0.05) values of egg density were noted for eggs of the quail and the same were lowest for ostrich eggs. Non-significant variations in egg density values were observed between eggs of the ducks, chicken, turkey and grey francolin. It has been concluded that the positive correlations between the internal and external egg quality traits indicated that the traits can be improved through selection.

The aim of this study was to investigated the effects of the egg shape index on egg quality characteristics in Guinea fowl. For this, the eggs were classified in terms of egg shape index, as ≤ 75, < 76 -77 > and ≥ 78. A total of 100 Guinea fowl eggs were evaluated to determine the egg quality traits ( egg weight, eggshell thickness, eggshell surface area, eggshell weight per unit surface area, eggshell ratio, albumen index, albumen ratio, yolk index, yolk ratio, yolk/albumen ratio, haugh unit and egg volume). In this study, eggshell thickness, eggshell weight per unit surface area, eggshell ratio, albumen index, albumen ratio, yolk index, yolk ratio, yolk/albumen ratio and haugh unit were not significantly affected by egg shape index groups. Whereas egg weight, eggshell surface area and egg volume were significantly affected by egg shape index groups. At the same time, there were found significant relationship between the egg shape index and egg quality traits. Egg shape index was found to be an important factor affecting the egg quality characteristics.

Records obtained from purebred normal feather and naked neck Nigerian indigenous chicken strains were used to assess the influence of strain and production cycle on external and internal egg quality traits. The assessment commenced from first lay to 120 days of lay, classified into four production cycles (PC): PC1 (1-30 days of lays), PC2 (31-60 days of lays), PC3 (61-90 days of lays), and PC4 (91-120 days of lays). Mean egg weight, length and breadth were 4.34% heavier, 2.10% longer and 1.72% wider in the normal feather than in the naked neck (p<0.05). No disparity due to strain effect was found in egg shape index. Eggshells from the two strains had similar weight but varied in thickness with shells from the naked neck being 0.02mm thicker than those from the normal feather (p<0.05). Eggs from the normal feather were 7.13, 5.76, 5.00, 7.10 and 8.11% superior in albumen weight, yolk height, albumen height, yolk index, and albumen index, respectively compared to its naked neck counterpart (p<0.05). Production cycle significantly influenced all external egg quality studied. An increase of 16.21% in egg weight was obtained by PC4. Egg length and breadth increased consistently with each subsequent PC (p<0.05) whereas egg shape index decreased with PC (p<0.05). Higher values were recorded for yolk weight, yolk and albumen length and width in each subsequent production cycle. Haugh unit, yolk and albumen height had best values at PC2. Our findings indicate that strain type and production cycle highly influenced egg quality traits of Nigerian indigenous chickens with the normal feather showing superiority. Furthermore, the best internal quality was obtained at PC2 (31-60 days of lay). Our findings could be useful in choosing selection criterion traits in breeding plans for the development of different layer lines of normal feather and naked neck.

In the present paper we describe the basic results of long-term selection for low yolk cholesterol content in Japanese quail and its influence on development and relationship with other egg quality traits during nineteen selected generations. The changes in a selected low cholesterol line were compared with changes in an unselected control line to obtain the real selection response to estimated traits. There was a significant decrease in yolk cholesterol content from 1 815 mg/100 g of fresh yolk (P generation) to 1 522 mg/100 g yolk (S19 generation). According to the value of regression coefficient <I>b</I> the decrease per one generation was 15.71 mg/100 g yolk. The decrease in cholesterol of the edible part of egg was also effective and it significantly decreased by 11.29 mg/100 g of the edible part of egg in each generation. There were only insignificant changes in egg weight, but we found a significant increase in yolk weight during selected generations. According to the regression analysis the increase in yolk weight was 0.019 mg/100 g per one generation. There were a positive but insignificant increase also in albumen weight, shell weight and weight of the edible part of egg. We found a small and insignificant decrease in shape index. We determined very high and significant positive correlations between cholesterol content in yolk and cholesterol content in the edible part of egg (0.801+++) and significant negative correlations between yolk cholesterol content and egg weight (–0.515+), yolk weight (–0.468+) and weight of the edible part of egg (–0.475). There were only low, positive and insignificant correlations between yolk cholesterol content and yolk egg proportion and egg shape index.

AbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the performance of laying hens and to determine possible age-related changes on external and internal quality traits of their eggs and synthesis of heat shock protein 70 kDa (HSP70) in the conventional cage and organic rearing systems. For this purpose, 4 different Bovans White hybrid flocks of the same age were monitored in each of these two systems for 52 weeks. While a total of 360 eggs were examined to determine the effects of rearing system and age (30 and 60 weeks) on egg quality traits, 48 liver tissue samples were examined for the analysis of HSP70. Egg production (hen-day) and dirty egg ratio were higher in the organic rearing system (P<0.05). The age at 50% yield, the age at peak of lay, and peak production rate were calculated as 156, 218.75 days and 95.98% in the conventional system, and 155.75, 201.50 days, and 96.56% in the organic system, respectively (P>0.05). While egg weight, albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight, shape index, and yolk colour were higher in the organic system, the crude ash ratio of eggshell and shell ratio were higher in the conventional system (P<0.05). It was also found that the egg weight, albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight, and the percentage of yolk were higher at 60 weeks of age (P<0.001). The percentage of shell and albumen, shape index, and yolk colour were higher at 30 weeks of age (P<0.001). The interactions between rearing system and age were statistically significant in terms of shell thickness, shape index, crude ash ratio, and yolk colour (P<0.001). Stress protein (HSP70) level was affected only by the rearing system and was higher in the organic system (P<0.001). As a result, the organic system can be considered as advantageous in terms of egg production and quality traits and the eggs of young hens exhibited better properties. The high level of HSP70 in the organic system could indicate that hens were affected by the environmental conditions at higher rates and/or the hens reared in the organic system had a stronger antioxidant defence system.
