A Concept and Framework for a Shipyard Layout Design Based on Simulation

Recently, global shipbuilding companies have been increasing their productivity or expanding their shipyards to accommodate a large amount of orders. However, few studies have been carried out on shipyard layout designs. This research presents a simulation-based shipyard layout design framework to resolve the problems of the shipyard layout design. The shipyard layout design framework was developed on the basis of the systems engineering method. The disciplined systems engineering technique was guided by ISO/IEC 15288 during the planning phase of the shipyard layout design framework development. This framework suggests how to achieve an efficient and effective shipyard layout design that can satisfy the stakeholder of the layout design process. Furthermore, a method is recommended for how the proposed shipyard layout should be verified and validated using a computer simulation. It is expected that the framework will contribute not only to the improvement of the existing shipyard layout design but also to the construction of the new shipyard or ship-yard advancement.

This article addresses the issue of educating undergraduate engineering students in the appropriate use of computer simulation in the design process. The premise that poorly designed assignments involving simulation can actually impair understanding is addressed. A set of goals for simulation-based exercises is suggested, and some tactics for meeting these goals are introduced. Finally, a specific example of a half-term assignment that is used to meet these goals is provided for illustration.

Co-design empowers people, giving them a voice in social marketing program design; however, approaches have mostly excluded expert knowledge. An abductive approach to co-design allows for inclusion of expert knowledge, providing theoretical guidance while simultaneously investigating user views and ideas extending understanding beyond known effective approaches. We use the seven-step co-design framework and outline how an abductive inference can be applied to co-design. Social cognitive theory constructs were integrated into the seven-step co-design process. The abductive approach to co-design was tested in two co-design sessions involving 40 participants. Findings demonstrate that theory can be successfully integrated into the seven-step co-design process through utilization of theory-mapped activity cards. This article provides guidance on how theory can be incorporated into ideation and insight generation. Limitations and future research recommendations are provided.

Facility layout design is becoming more challenging as manufacturing moves from traditionally emphasised mass production to mass customisation. The increasing demand for customised products and services is driving the need to increase flexibility and adaptability of both production processes and their material handling systems. A holistic approach for designing facility layouts with optimised flows considering production and logistics systems constraints seems to be missing in the literature. Several tools, including traditional methods, analytic hierarchy process, multiple-attribute decision making, simulation, and optimisation methods, can support such a process. Among these, simulation-based optimisation is the most promising. This paper aims to develop a facility layout design methodology supported by simulation-based optimisation while considering both production and logistics constraints. A literature review of facility layout design with simulation and optimisation and the theoretical and empirical challenges are presented. The integration of simulation-based optimisation in the proposed methodology serves to overcome the identified challenges, providing managers and stakeholders with a decision support system that handles the complex task of facility layout design.

Simulation-based communication education has improved nursing students’ communication knowledge and skills. However, communication patterns that students commonly exhibit in simulated situations and students’ responses to specific clinical situations have not been systematically examined. The specific aims of the present study were (1) to identify non-therapeutic communication patterns that nursing students exhibit in simulated situations in the computer simulation-based education (ComEd) program, and (2) explore students’ responses to challenging clinical situations. This study used a mixed-method research design and a convenience sampling method to recruit participants. Frequency analysis and a conventional content analysis method were used to analyze answers provided by participants. A total of 66 students from four Korean nursing schools participated in the study. “False reassurance” was found to be the most common non-therapeutic communication pattern used by nursing students. Nursing students had difficulty in clinical situations such as reporting a patient’s condition to a doctor, communicating with a patient and perform basic nursing skills at the same time, and managing conflicts between patients. Technology-based communication simulation programs, which reflect various clinical situations, are considered a new alternative that can supplement the limitations of clinical practicum and improve the quality of nursing education.

In this article, geometric primitive approach is used to realize the design and development of point symbol database for mapping based on C# .NET and ArcGIS Engine. This paper presents the design framework and the design process of point symbol database, and studies design method and attribute management of point symbol, especially the design of point symbol attribute of word type of TrueType, which makes conveniently the point symbol for special map users needed.
