In February 2007, NSRP awarded the project entitled “Design for Producibility (DFP) for Mid-Tiered Shipyards,” a collaborative research project which included Bollinger, Atlantic Marine, and Todd Pacific Shipyards. The purpose of the project was to incorporate DFP methodologies into the ship design process for each of the participating midtiered shipyards to enable simplification of the ship design process and vessel construction requirements. This paper will provide an understanding of the process used to develop the shipyard-specific DFP information. The paper will also provide a quantification and appreciation of the resulting cost benefits associated with the implementation of DFP principles at each of the participating shipyards. New construction programs in each of the shipyards enabled real-time metrics to be captured, illustrating the achievement of cost reduction opportunities resulting from DFP implementation.

Although librarians generally display an inclusive management style, barriers to students with disabilities remain widespread. Against this backdrop, a collaborative research project called Inclusive Library was launched in 2019 in Catalonia, Spain. This study empirically tests how involving students with disabilities in the experience design process can lead to new improvements in users’ library experience. A mix of qualitative techniques, namely focus groups, ethnographic techniques and post-experience surveys, were used to gain insights from the 20 libraries and 20 students with disabilities collaborating in the project. Based on the participants’ voices and follow-up experiences, the study makes several suggestions on how libraries can improve their accessibility. Results indicate that ensuring proper resource allocation for accessibility improves students with disabilities’ library experience. Recommendations for library managers are also provided.

This study was developed in the framework of the research project of the University of Guayaquil, called Visual Identity of the Organizations of the Popular and Solidarity Economy (VIPSE), to identify the role that the brief instrument had as an information collector in the development of visual identity, since at the beginning of the design process there were problems in the collection of information in the interviews; the methodology used is qualitative, since it was verified that the use of this instrument was effective in the development of visual identities. By applying this instrument, the brand identity of 112 organizations of the popular and solidarity economy with 1,200 beneficiaries and 15 records was created, and the design was affected by the way the brief was developed during the design process.

The attacks suffered by France in January and November 2015, and then in the course of 2016, especially the Nice attack, provoked intense online activity both during the events and in the months that followed. The digital traces left by this reactivity and reactions to events gave rise, from the very first days and even hours after the attacks, to a ‘real-time’ institutional archiving by the National Library of France ( Bibliothèque nationale de France, BnF) and the National Audio-visual Institute ( Institut national de l’audiovisuel, Ina). The results amount to millions of archived tweets and URLs. This article seeks to highlight some of the most significant issues raised by these relatively unprecedented corpora, from collection to exploitation, from online stream of data to its mediation and re-composition. Indeed, web archiving practices in times of emergency and crises are significant, almost emblematic, loci to explore the human and technical agencies, and the complex temporalities, of ‘born-digital’ heritage. The cases examined here emphasize the way these ‘emergency collections’ challenge the perimeters and the very nature of web archives as part of our digital and societal heritage, and the guiding visions of its governance and mission. Finally, the present analysis underlines the need for a careful contextualization of the design process – both of original web pages or tweets and of their archived images – and of the tools deployed to collect, retrieve and analyse them.

In June 2010, NSRP awarded the project entitled “Weld Shrinkage and Distortion Allowance Data Model for Neat Construction Ship Design Engineering,” a collaborative research project which included four shipyard team members; Bollinger Shipyards, HHI- Ingalls Shipyard, Vigor Shipyard (Seattle), and Marinette Marine Corporation. The purpose of the project was to provide comprehensive weld shrinkage and distortion solutions intended to enable neat construction capability across the U.S. shipbuilding industry. This paper will provide highlights of the NSRP project and describe how two of the participating shipyards, Bollinger Shipyards and Vigor Shipyard, have taken significant steps towards improving their distortion control, improving their accuracy control and incorporating weld shrinkage factors into their designs as steps towards achieving neat construction.

The design of ship is related to several disciplines such as hydrostatic, resistance, propulsion and economic. The traditional design process of ship only involves independent design optimization within each discipline. With such an approach, there is no guarantee to achieve the optimum design. And at the same time improving the efficiency of ship optimization is also crucial for modem ship design. In this paper, an introduction of both the traditional ship design process and the fundamentals of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) theory are presented and a comparison between the two methods is carried out. As one of the most frequently applied MDO methods, Collaborative Optimization (CO) promotes autonomy of disciplines while providing a coordinating mechanism guaranteeing progress toward an optimum and maintaining interdisciplinary compatibility. However there are some difficulties in applying the conventional CO method, such as difficulties in choosing an initial point and tremendous computational requirements. For the purpose of overcoming these problems, Design Of Experiment (DOE) and a new support vector regression algorithm are applied to CO to construct statistical approximation model in this paper. The support vector regression algorithm approximates the optimization model and is updated during the optimization process to improve accuracy. It is shown by examples that the computing efficiency and robustness of this CO method are higher than with the conventional CO method. Then this new Collaborative Optimization (CO) method using approximate technology is discussed in detail and applied in ship design which considers hydrostatic, propulsion, weight and volume, performance and cost. It indicates that CO method combined with approximate technology can effectively solve complex engineering design optimization problem. Finally, some suggestions on the future improvements are proposed.

The international role and status of Italy among international powers has been an issue of debate in both the political and the academic context. What has never been systematically investigated is the way in which other powers with which Italy interacts in institutional contexts perceive Italy and its international role. It is the aim of this special issue to provide an overview of how Italy is perceived abroad. This introduction explains why it is worth looking at international images of Italy, and sums up the findings of the research project.
