Coloured (black, purple, blue, red, etc.) cereal grains, rich in anthocyanins, have recently gained a lot of attention in the food industry. Anthocyanins are water-soluble flavonoids, and are responsible for red, violet, and blue colours in fruits, vegetables, and grains. Anthocyanins have demonstrated antioxidant potential in both in vitro and in vivo studies, and the consumption of foods high in anthocyanins has been linked to lower risks of chronic diseases. As such, whole grain functional foods made with coloured grains are promising new products. This paper will review the characteristics of cereal anthocyanins, and assess their prevalence in various commercially relevant crops including wheat, barley, maize, and rice. A brief overview of the antioxidant potential, and current research on the health effects of cereal-based anthocyanins will be provided. Finally, processing of coloured cereals in whole grain products will be briefly discussed. A full understanding of the fate of anthocyanins in whole grain products, and more research targeted towards health outcomes of anthocyanin supplementation to/inclusion in cereal food products are the next logical steps in this research field.

Context: The medicinal plants have enormous pharmacological properties and having fewer side effects. Today there is increasing demand of medicinal plants as an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate antioxidant, anti-aging and anti-wrinkle potential of Salvia officinalis. Materials and Methods: Salvia officinalis (Lamiaceae) is folk medicine of Asia and Latin America. Powdered crude drug 100 g were successively extracted in a soxhlet apparatus with petroleum ether (60-80ºC), chloroform and methanol. After successive solvents extraction methanolic extract was used for testing of antioxidant potential using DPPH assay. Further, antiaging potential of extract was investigated by inhibitory effect of various enzymatic estimations i.e. Col-I, Ela-I and Hya-I inhibitory assays on early aging human skin fibroblasts. Antiwrinkle potential of plant Salvia officinalis was done by using UV light induced photo aging model. Results: Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of glycosides, alkaloids flavonoids, and triterpenoids, saponins and Phenolic compounds in high level. Extract showed inhibitory concentration (IC50:24.65) and ascorbic acid the standard antioxidant showed inhibitory concentration (IC50:20.10). In enzymatic estimations assay, the Col-I, Ela-I and Hya-I of extract were assessed showing inhibitory concentration as Col-I (IC50:21.36), Ela-I (IC50:35.05) and Hya-I (IC50:23.44) respectively. Thus, MeOH extract of Salvia officinalis able to inhibit 50% of the activity of aging related enzymes Col-I, Ela-I and Hya-I. The wrinkle score of negative control i.e. UV treated group was 2.83±0.408 and MeOH extract of Salvia officinalis treated group is 1.83 ±0.753. Conclusion: This study concluded that MeOH extract of Salvia officinalis has confirmed the high antioxidant potential and In vitro and In vivo inhibitory potential of antiaging enzymes assessed, thus they could be used for further development of cosmetic products and nutraceuticals.

Background and objectives: Natural products such as essential oils with antioxidant potential can reduce the level of oxidative stress and prevent the oxidation of biomolecules. In the present study, we investigated the antioxidant potential of Lantana montevidensis leaf essential oil (EOLM) in chemical and biological models using Drosophila melanogaster. Materials and methods: in addition, the chemical components of the oil were identified and quantified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the percentage compositions were obtained from electronic integration measurements using flame ionization detection (FID). Results: our results demonstrated that EOLM is rich in terpenes with Germacrene-D (31.27%) and β-caryophyllene (28.15%) as the major components. EOLM (0.12–0.48 g/mL) was ineffective in scavenging DPPH radical, and chelating Fe(II), but showed reducing activity at 0.24 g/mL and 0.48 g/mL. In in vivo studies, exposure of D. melanogaster to EOLM (0.12–0.48 g/mL) for 5 h resulted in 10% mortality; no change in oxidative stress parameters such as total thiol, non-protein thiol, and malondialdehyde contents, in comparison to control (p > 0.05). Conclusions: taken together, our results indicate EOLM may not be toxic at the concentrations tested, and thus may not be suitable for the development of new botanical insecticides, such as fumigants or spray-type control agents against Drosophila melanogaster.

Economic challenges associated with non-communicable diseases and the sociocultural outlook of many patients especially in Africa has increased the dependence on traditional herbal medicines for these diseases. <em>Hypoxis colchicifolia</em> is a traditional medicinal plant used in Southern Africa against an array of ailments. This study evaluated the <em>in vitro</em> antidiabetic (α-amyalse and α-glucosidase), antihypertensive (angiotensin-converting enzyme) and anticancer potential of <em>H. colchicifolia</em> corm as well as leaf (acetone, methanol and aqueous) extracts. Results showed that extracts have a moderate anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive potential, with great anti-cancer potential. The acetone extract of both fresh and dried corms produced significant α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition with ACE inhibited predominantly by the dried corms methanolic extract (IC<sub>50</sub> 368.2 μg/mL). Methanolic extract of dried leaves showed the least cytotoxicity against the noncancerous cell line HEK-293 while exhibiting the highest inhibition of MCF-7 cells (IC<sub>50</sub> 3.24 μg/mL). All extracts exhibited a greater inhibitory potential in A549 cells than the positive control camptothecin (IC<sub>50</sub> 304.2μg/mL). This study reveals that <em>H. colchicifolia</em> has therapeutic potential as an anti-diabetic and anticancer agent; however, further in vivo studies need to be conducted.
