Comparison of Job Related Stress, Job Satisfaction and Coping Strategies adopted by Nursing Personnel Working in Critical Care and Non-Critical Care Units

AbstractIntroduction:Although several studies link job-related stressors with adverse reactions among emergency medical technicians (EMTs), more standardized research is needed, since much remains unknown about stress responses, coping styles and their consequences for EMTs. This paper presents the results of two studies. Study I investigated the relation between job-related stressors, job satisfaction, and psychological distress, while Study II investigated how coping is related to occupational burnout, job-related stress, and physiological arousal.Hypothesis:Study I: Those EMTs experiencing greater job-related stressors are less satisfied with their jobs and more psychologically distressed.Objective, Study II:To obtain preliminary information about which coping strategies are associated with greater feelings of stress and burnout and more intense autonomic nervous system reactivity.Methods:For both studies, EMTs from a large, urban, public EMS organization in the southern United States were asked to participate. Study I: Subjects completed an informed consent document, a demographics questionnaire, a measure of job stress (the Stress Diagnosis Inventory), a measure of job satisfaction (Job-in-General), and a measure of psychological symptomatology (Symptom Checklist-90, Revised). Pearson product-moment correlations were computed between the measures. Study II: Subjects completed an informed consent document, a demographics/information sheet, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Ways of Coping Scale (WOCS). They then completed 30 days of monitoring using the Daily Stress Inventory (DSI) and the Daily Autonomic Nervous System Response Inventory (DANSRI). Pearson product-moment correlations were computed between the measures.Results:Study I: Those EMTs who experienced greater job-related stress also were significantly more dissatisfied with their jobs, more depressed, anxious, hostile, and endorsed greater global psychological distress. Study IT. The Depersonalization subscale on the MBI correlated significantly with the following WOCS subscales: Accepting Responsibility, Confrontive Coping, Distancing, and Escape/Avoidance. Emotional Exhaustion on the MBI correlated significantly with Confrontive Coping, Escape/Avoidance, and Social Support, while data obtained on the 40 subjects who completed the daily monitoring revealed that DSI-Impact, DANSRI-Number, and DANSRI-Impact scores each correlated significantly with Accepting Responsibility, Confrontive Coping, and Escape/Avoidance.Conclusion:A significant portion of an EMT's job satisfaction and psychological well-being is associated with the degree to which they are experiencing job-related stress, and, furthermore, this distress level appears to be clinically elevated. This implies that in-service programs and psychological support services designed to help EMTs manage their job-related stress may improve job satisfaction and decrease psychological distress. The coping styles most consistently associated with maladaptive outcomes were: Accepting Responsibility, Confrontive Coping, and Escape/Avoidance. Thus, subjects who were more likely to handle stress with self-blame, aggression, hostility, and risk taking or with wishful thinking, escape tendencies, and avoidance were more likely to endorse more negative outcomes.

Objective: To assess the critical care nurses’ perception of their caring behaviors and factors affecting these behaviors.Methods: Participants of this descriptive correlational exploratory study included 277 critical care nurses selected conveniently from nurses worked in all critical care units in King Khalid Hospital, Jeddah. A self-reported questionnaire namely, “Critical Care Nurses Caring Behavior Perception” developed by the researchers after reviewing related literature was used to assess caring behaviors and their affecting factors as perceived by critical care nurses.Results: Seventy percent of the nurses aged between 31 to 50 years old and more than half of nurses had ICU experience ranged from 6 to 10 years, while two thirds of nurses had no previous training about caring behaviors. The study findings revealed that the majority of nurses had high scores of perceived caring behaviors, whereas the mean of their perception was 296.96 ± 18.32. There was a statistical significant positive relationship between nurses’ perception and their work circumstances, workload, job satisfaction, educational background and patient characteristics.Conclusions: It is important to consider critical units’ circumstances, nurses’ educational background, job satisfaction, as well as the nature of critically ill patients in order to promote nurses awareness and implementation of caring behaviors. Moreover, replication of the current study using qualitative approach for in-depth analysis of the impact of factors could affecting caring behaviors on nurses’ perception in various highly specialized critical care units.

BACKGROUND Older adults were amongst the first to experience the hazards of COVID-19 stress, from health to social isolation. This situation motivated research organizations and advocacy groups to promote Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to support seniors and to mitigate the risk of contagion. OBJECTIVE We used a multimethodological approach to examine how older adults appraised news articles about older adults' COVID-related stress and coping strategies, focusing on ICTs. METHODS This study involved targeted search of several international news media outlets for articles addressing older adults COVID-related stress, coping strategies, and ICTs. Articles that satisfied our selection criteria had more than 100 public comments on their website, Facebook and Reddit feeds. We scraped the comments and performed a quasi-automated social network analysis to identify and map the pattern of interrelations between the topics of age, stress, resources (for coping) and technology. RESULTS Having analyzed the themes emerging from 3390 valid comments in seven international news outlets, revealed that ICTs were not identified as the primary resource for coping with COVID-19 stress. Life experience and putting the discomfort of the pandemic for their age group in perspective (compared to its economic burdens for the younger members of the society) were more prevalent in comments addressing age-related COVID coping strategies. Socialization strategies and connections to people, especially friends and family, were also prominent. Although ICTs such as Zoom and social media platforms were identified as important for maintaining connections, they were not seen as a replacement for face-to-face or in-person experiences. The availability of technologically-mediated news, information and entertainment channels were linked to other activities that helped older adults cope, however these comments also revealed critical attitudes towards ICTs in general. An important finding from our study is that older adults passionately objected to uncritical and patronizing assumptions about the ability of older adults to deal with stress, and to the promotion of ICTs as the most important coping strategy. CONCLUSIONS Informed by media ecology and the appraisal theory of stress and coping, this interdisciplinary approach provides a nuanced understanding of what resources for coping are valued by a group of technologically-savvy older adults. Using social media as a data collection site, we showed that even amongst a digitally-connected group of older adults, ICTS were not positioned as the primary solution to COVID-related problems. As older commenters stated, in promoting ICT use it is necessary to acknowledge, their online and offline needs including their desire for face-to-face connections, their past experiences and perspectives on aging with ICTs, and the import of life experience as a key factor for mitigating stress. The relationships of perceived mattering to others, job-related stress, and job satisfaction were examined for 388 elementary, middle, and high school counselors from across the United States. Participants completed the School Counselor Mattering Scale, the School Counselor Job-Stress Assessment, and several job satisfaction questions in order to assess perceptions of mattering to others at their schools and their job-related stress, and how these two constructs relate to school counselors’ overall job satisfaction. Mattering to others at work and job-related stress accounted for 35% of the variance in job satisfaction for the total sample of school counselors; however, mattering did not moderate the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction. Results revealed that elementary school counselors experienced the greatest job satisfaction and the lowest levels of job-related stress, and high school counselors experienced the greatest job dissatisfaction and the greatest levels of job-related stress. Implications for school counselors’ mattering and job satisfaction are considered.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relations among negative emotional reactions (reduced affective organisational commitment and higher job-related stress), and behavioural reactions to job insecurity (coping behaviour). A non-experimental correlation research design was used and the participants were a convenience sample of employees working for a private hospital in Gauteng, South Africa (N = 242). The measuring instruments included the Job Insecurity Inventory, the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, the Experience of Work and Life Circumstances Questionnaire, and the COPE Questionnaire. The results showed that job insecurity was associated with job-related stress. Affective job insecurity was associated with detachment from the organisation, while cognitive job insecurity was associated with low identification with the organisation. Experiences of affective job insecurity, job-related stress, and low organisational commitment were associated with the use of avoidance coping strategies. Employees who experienced cognitive job insecurity (compared to those who experienced lower cognitive job insecurity) were less inclined to apply active coping strategies, even if their job-related stress was low.
