Purpose The objective of this paper is to explore and extend the existing literature on the use of gamification in banking. Design/methodology/approach Gamification is a new concept, further its application in banking is in a nascent stage both from the perspective of research and application. To systematise the limited literature and to draw the future research prospects, studies are presented based on theories, characteristics, context and methodologies framework. Findings The synthesis of the literature on gamification opened to a spectrum of areas to determine the future of gamification in the banking industry. The study emphasises the use of social and psychological theory building in the banking industry. Further, the research on game elements is an underexplored area in the banking domain, while they have well exploited in other contexts. Banking context needs more literature evidence, empirically tested and validated research methods to understand the personality traits and customer behaviour arising from the use of gamification. Practical implications For bank management, this study lays the impact of gamification in this era of digital banking. With the right mix of hedonic and utilitarian elements, bank management shall be able to boost financial literacy, improve saving habits, simplify banking products and strengthen knowledge updates among bank employees. Understanding the key elements and present status of research on gamification and their impact on customer behaviour development is crucial for the bank in building strategic advantage. Originality/value This study on gamification applied explicitly to the banking sector. With no clear application of the elements and mechanics of technology used in gamification, this study presents past literature in a systematised manner and draws the future research agenda of gamification in banking services.

PurposeWith the increasing digitalization processes taking place in different industries, the success of family small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) appears to be more under threat than for any other types of organizations, especially when information technologies (ITs) are not adequately used and managed. To grow and increase the chances of survival, family SMEs need more than ever IT. Stemming from agency theory, the aim of this article is to understand whether family harmony impacts the performance of family SMEs and to what extent IT mediates this relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe research follows a quantitative approach, based on a sample of 182 family SMEs. Structured equation modeling, through SmartPLS, was employed to validate the research model.FindingsThis study’s main findings suggest that family harmony positively impacts firm performance and that IT governance and strategy mediate positively this relationship.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, the relatively limited number of respondents limits the degree of representativeness of all family SMEs. Replicating the research with a larger number of respondents could strengthen the findings. Second, this study is limited to French firms and future research could extend the findings by looking at cross-country comparisons.Practical implicationsFamily SMEs are encouraged to link their IT governance with their IT strategy in order to increase their organizational performance. A favorable family harmony will make it easier to choose and implement a richer IT strategy and put in place an adequate IT governance function.Originality/valueThis research offers an enriched knowledge of the roles of family harmony and technological innovation in family SMEs and IT contexts as significant predictors of organizational performance. It contributes to family firm theory through the identification of three determinants of family SMEs' performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to predict the antecedents of the integration level among marketing, logistics and production, considering the influence of formal and informal factors that generate integration and the existence of conflicts. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 179 participants from all regions of Brazil was conducted. A parsimonious model including four dimensions and 34 variables was developed through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Findings The field data corroborate studies dealing with the impact of various formal and informal integration factors on the cross-functional integration level as a construct. Furthermore, this paper concludes that the level of cross-functional can be defined as: the intensity of the relationship among internal functions which can be measured by the mutual existence of formal and informal factors and the absence of manifest conflicts. Research limitations/implications The findings of this paper cannot be generalized because of the convenience sampling. Future research could apply a probabilistic sampling and try to explore other geographical settings in both national and international contexts. Practical implications The proposed model can generate important information for managers by pointing out variables that can predict the integration level and their impacts on the organizational performance. The paper concludes with examples about how the model could be useful in several practical situations. Originality/value This paper proposes a model with reasonable accuracy to predict the integration level and overcomes prior research limitations with respect to models to predict the antecedents of the integration level, particularly the role of conflicts in the integration processes.

In recent years, the concept of an organizational culture in hotels has held an important position on both a theoretical and practical level because this culture significantly affects organizational performance and the strategies adopted by hotels. Therefore, it is considered one of the key factors in determining hotels’ tendency towards outsourcing and sustainable performance. In this study, we aim to analyze the impact of the organizational culture on the level of outsourcing and sustainable performance. To do so, we will use the Competing Values Framework (CVF), which divides organizational culture into four typologies: hierarchical, group, rational, and development cultures. A personal questionnaire was administered to the directors or managers of 114 hotels located in two Egyptian cities: Hurgada and Sharm El Sheikh. The results of the structural model suggest the negative impact of the hierarchical and development cultures on the level of outsourcing. The results show a positive influence of the four types of organizational culture on sustainable performance, suggesting that these hotels have a strong interest in sustainability and the environment. The findings reveal a negative relationship between the level of outsourcing and sustainable performance. Finally, this study presents academic and practical implications, as well as recommendations for future research.

Purpose: Output of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) mostly depends upon efficiency and performance in completing different projects. NGOs in Pakistan operate in diverse fields including health, education, women empowerment etc. The job of the NGOs tends to be stressful due to security issues, psychological strains, organizational structures, and various roles of the employees. This study investigated and explored outcomes of occupational stress in the form of employee engagement at work; furthermore, the research investigated that how emotional intelligence intervenes the impact of occupational stress and employee engagement, as being the mediator. The conservation of resource theory (COR) is applied to explore the relationship of occupational stress and its outcomes in non government organizations of Pakistan. Methodology/Design/Approach: Data was collected from 346 employees (middle level) of NGOs. Stratified sampling technique was used to collect the data. The study makes use of quantitative analytics to test the hypothesis. A positivist approach was adopted for the study as it follows a well-defined structure for the topic under study. Correlation, Regression and sobel’s test for mediation analysis was used in the research to study the relation among the variables. Findings: The study finds the effect of occupational stress on engagement of employees in NGOs and this relationship is mediated by four constructs (relationship management, social management, self-awareness and self-management) of Emotional intelligence. The study concludes that more the level of occupational stress, lower the engagement of employees. This study also finds that relationship between occupational stress and reduced employee engagement is lowered in employees having high level of emotional intelligence. Results also found to be consistent with conservation of resource theory. Limitations/Future Research: The current study is limited to the middle level management; future research can be further extended to all levels in the organization. Employee engagement as a single outcome off occupational stress is analyzed other outcomes may be explored in future researches. Implications: This study contributes to the literature of occupational stress and its outcome in the shape of engagement with an individuality of how emotional intelligence mediates this relationship. The study supports the results of the growing scholarly work on the phenomenon. Practical implications: This research provides insight for organizations, management and for individuals to incorporate emotional intelligence effectively to deal with the stress without being depleted. Additionally, recommendations are provided for the NGOs to enhance the organizational performance through employee engagement and emotional intelligence. Originality/Value: This research explored and analyzed relationship of occupational stress and engagement and emotional intelligence in a different dimension. Further the non-governmental organization remains largely unexplored in this area.

Much of the literature linking organization structure to performance falls into two broad research streams. One stream concerns formal structure – the hierarchy of authority or reporting relationships as well as the degree of standardization, formalization, specialization, etc. The impact of formal structure and other elements of organization design on performance is typically contingent on factors such as strategic orientation, task characteristics, and environmental conditions. The other research stream focuses on informal structure – a network of interpersonal and intra-organizational relationships. Properties of informal structure are typically shown to have a more direct (less contingent) impact on organizational performance. Despite these pronounced differences in the conceptualization of organization structure, considerable overlap and complementarity exist between the two research streams. In this article, I compare and contrast a pair of exemplars from each stream – the information processing perspective and the social network perspective – with respect to their conceptualizations of organization structure and its relationship to performance. Several recommendations for future research that combines the two approaches are offered.

Conflict Management is one of the essential elements in casual and professional life for enhancing an individual's performance and to bring better results in intense organizational pressures. Although studies which explore the effect of these on job satisfaction are very few and therefore there is a need to check the impact of these form of strategies on job satisfaction. Although according to the studies each and every style of conflict management does not relate to job satisfaction and therefore the major need to associate this style with organizational performance. Thus, a quantitative study has been conducted in the commercial banking sector of Pakistan through a closed-ended questionnaire. Analysis was carried out through the help of statistical data analysis software SMART-PLS and the results of the study indicated that each and every style of conflict management does not result in job satisfaction, nor in the betterment of organizational performance. The results imply that a more rigorous approach and innovative strategies in conflict management should be devised and followed by the managers to address the conflicting issues.

PurposeThis study investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on organizational performance, especially competitive performance (CP) along with moderating role of the organizational culture (OC) from the banking sector of China. Drawing on the stakeholder theory, the first goal is to examine the relationships between CSR and organizational CP. Second, the purpose is to evaluate the moderation of OC between the relationship of CSR and CP, respectively.Design/methodology/approachSEM using SmartPLS was majorly engaged to ascertain the relationship and to inquire the assumed hypotheses. The convenience sampling was engaged to collect the data from the Chinese banking market with the help of students, colleagues and personal visits.FindingsThe findings exhibited that CSR both external and internal CSR has significant correlations on organizational CP within banking sector of China. Second, the findings revealed a positive moderation influence of OC between the relationships of CSR and organizational CP. The comprehensive analysis of each factor of CSR on organizational CP was autonomously inspected to understand the insights which ensure that how the incorporation of CSR and OC activities may improve organizational CP.Research limitations/implicationsThis study faces numerous limitations related to sample and geographic locations that assure new work possibilities for researchers across the world.Practical implicationsThis study equips insightful information for management on how organizations can obtain CP by consolidating CSR and OC activities as their more productive strategic tools. This article endows with potential theoretical and managerial implications with empirical addition to concerned literature of OC, CSR and organizational CP.Social implicationsUnderstanding OC and CSR activities can provide interesting and helpful insights for the personnel to perform well within the banking institutes.Originality/valueThe topic of CSR and culture has been known as the evolving concept that is getting strong concern for the researchers.
