Productivity in the construction industry is declining in real-time. The decline in productivity is a source of worry for practitioners and researchers. The purpose of this paper is to ascertain major factors influencing productivity in relation to the notion of respects for people (RFP) in construction. The reviewed literature influences the semi-structured questionnaire used to survey construction professionals in Johannesburg, South Africa. The results reaffirm the tension productivity increment and the enhancement of RfP as both ideas appear to be moving in opposite directions on a typical construction site. It was discovered that respect for workers on a construction site is a major concern. The paper argues that ethical reasoning affects productivity. Therefore, an appropriate management system is required to improve the workers' perception of productivity and RfP working on construction sites.

The significance of safety commitment to improving safety performance and reducing risk is widely accepted and substantive research has been conducted globally in order to improve the safety performance of the construction industry such as: “safety commitment”, “design for safety”, “safety culture”, “safety climate”, “behavior base safety BBS”. Despite the research and improvements that have been made through the years, construction stakeholders are continuously being challenged with occurrences of injury on site. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the factors, which influence of management commitment toward improving safety performance in the construction industry of Nigeria. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analysis was performed using SPSS version 16 software. The results of the study showed that “involvement of workers in the preparation of safety programs for the site” and “appropriate issuance of motivational directives by the top management to enhance safety” significantly impact on the safety performance of construction stakeholders. Thus, the research outcome would be of benefit to top management of construction companies, policy makers and building development approvers.

Multiple environmental pressures, both internal and external to the organization, are examined as factors influencing the administration of health and safety programmes and subsequent accident performance. Data were collected from seven industrial sectors in New Zealand. Those firms with better safety records indicated that the most influential factors shaping their policies included government rules and regulations and demonstrated employee concerns and demands. The quality of the relationship with the union and the locus of enterprise ownership also play a significant role in the effectiveness of health and safety administration.

This paper proposes an improved evaluation model combining grey correlation analysis and AHP method that measures the safety performance of construction site. The safety assessment index system was established relating the actual condition of construction site. The weight of each assessment index was calculated through AHP model which use in grey correlation analysis for breaking through the limitations of conventional method. Then, the grey correlation degree was obtained through calculating the weighted means of grey correlation coefficient, and then, the rank of safety performance level of construction sites was determined. Through this improvement, the assessment results can be more scientific and functional. The effectiveness of our methodology was verified with an empirical study. The results show that this method can be an effective tool to predict the safety performance of construction projects sites, which is useful to reduce the occurrence of the construction safety misadventure.

Abstract Safety management is very important for construction sector as it is the most hazardous working environments when it comes to occupational fatalities. The high cases such as injuries at the workplace, illnesses, and fatalities often caused harm to the workers and create the delay on the work progress. Therefore, this paper reviewed the whole operation process of the sensor modules that enhanced safety performance to prevent accidents occurred on construction site. By providing lab scale location-based safety management services to the workers, this technology able to allow a speedy response in the event of accident. From the benchmark conducted, there are three study that had been conducted previously using vibrational alert signal which identified as an accurate transmitted especially inside a danger zone, as the vibrational function of the sensor module able to function within the designated range. The second benchmark shows that previous study able to identify errors in the location information of the workers arising from obstacles, even though so the technology able to conveyed within the designated range as well. Thirdly, the previous study able to shows the information of a fall was conveyed quickly upon occurrence, and the previous study showed that fall able to identified using the context-aware information from the sensor module. The findings showed that the real-time location and context-aware information collected from the sensor module can be used to prevent accidents and respond quickly in the event of a fall. However, the vibration signal which generated by sensor module was insufficient to alert the workers when approaching the danger zone at construction site. Therefore to improve the whole development of prototype sensor module a further study is needed to incorporate the vibrational and alarm signal for recognising accidents upon occurred for enhancement safety management at construction sites.

PurposeThis study proposes a self-regulatory framework to enhance safety performance at the construction stage among building developers.Design/methodology/approachExtant literature identified 137 potential factors that influence the construction safety performances of building developers. Focus group discussions and interviews were conducted with 11 panels of experts and professionals. The Relative Importance Index (RII) was used to analyse the response feedback described in a similar paper. In this study, the survey tool used was set up with 40 variables grouped into eight latent variables in the framework, which were agreed and certified as “extremely important” by the panel. Based on random sampling, data were collected from 229 valid respondents. Structural equation modelling (SEM) technique using Smart PLS software was then used to analyse the respondent's feedback.FindingsThe results show that safety administration and processes, effective communication of safety behaviour, significantly influenced safety performance on a construction site with β values of 0.330 and 0.431 along with t values of 3.005 and 2.547 at p < 0.1, respectively. These factors, among others, provide a distinct approach to understanding and improving on-site construction safety. The study findings will potentially benefit building professionals and other stakeholders by improving awareness of safety practices.Research limitations/implicationsThe study may not have covered all possible factors that influence the construction safety performance of building developers. Also, the generalizability and transferability of the research outcome to the construction industry wide use is also limited when reference is made to the characteristics of the research respondents and/or participants. In addition, validation of the framework by five professionals is rather small.Practical implicationsTheoretically, the framework through the identified factors provide a distinct approach to understanding and improving on-site construction safety through voluntary adherence to self-regulatory standard where there are no enforceable laws and regulations to promote safety. The study findings will potentially benefit building professionals and other stakeholders by improving awareness of the health and safety practices of the construction industry.Originality/valueMany research efforts have developed frameworks and models for construction safety. However, the particularity of these frameworks to countries other than Nigeria requires similar research to be conducted to enhance the safety performance of building developers.
