Authors report on the use of Integra dermal regeneration template after excision of an extended, recurrent skin tumor in the temporal region. The area covered with Integra was 180 cm2. Skin grafting to cover Integra was performed on the 28th day. Both Integra and the skin transplant were taken 100%. Integra dermal regeneration template can provide good functional and aesthetic result in the surgical management of extended skin tumors over the skull. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 225–227.

Melanoma is a malignant skin tumor that results in poor disease prognosis due to unsuccessful treatment options. During the early stages of tumor progression, surgery is the primary approach that assures a good outcome. However, in the presence of metastasis, melanoma hasbecome almost immedicable, since the tumors can not be removed and the disease recurs easily in a short period of time. However, in recent years, the combination of nanomedicine and chemotherapeutic drugs has offered promising solutions to the treatment of late-stage melanoma. Extensive studies have demonstrated that nanomaterials and their advanced applications can improve the efficacy of traditional chemotherapeutic drugs in order to overcome the disadvantages, such as drug resistance, low drug delivery rate and reduced targeting to the tumor tissue. In the present review, we summarized the latest progress in imaging diagnosis and treatment of melanoma using functional nanomaterials, including polymers, liposomes, metal nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles and carbon-based nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are reported widely in melanoma chemotherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and hyperthermia.

Effective diagnosis of skin tumours mainly relies on the analysis of the characteristics of the lesion. Automatic detection of malignant skin lesion has become a mandatory task to reduce the risk of human deaths and increase their survival. This article proposes a study of skin lesion classification using transfer learning approach. The transfer learning model uses four different state-of-the-art architectures, namely Inception v3, Residual Networks (ResNet 50), Dense Convolutional Networks (DenseNet 201) and Inception Residual Networks (Inception ResNet v2). These models are trained under the dataset comprising seven different classes of skin lesions. The skin lesion images are pre-processed using image quantization, grayscaling and the Wiener filter before final training step. These models are compared for performance evaluation on different metrics. The present study shows the efficacy of the methodology for automated classification of lesion images.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin lesion and is frequently curatively treated with local excision. Improper removal or neglect of BCC is a particular problem for head and neck surgeons. We describe a case of a recurrent BCC that aggressively grew from the forehead skin through the skull and into the frontal lobe. We also present a review of the literature. Despite its fairly benign growth pattern, BCC should never be underestimated, and care should be taken not only in the complete primary excision but also in cancer surveillance.

Atypical fibroxanthoma is a malignant skin tumor with histologic features similar to those of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, but lacking its more aggressive behavior. The tumor is composed of pleomorphic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant cytoplasm, commonly arranged in a spindle cell pattern. Recent genetic studies have identified similarities between atypical fibroxanthoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, such as the presence of 9p and 13q deletions in both tumors, favoring a common histogenesis. However, the lack of K-ras and H-ras mutations in atypical fibroxanthoma compared with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma could explain the difference in aggressiveness and continued separation of these entities. Exclusion of other neoplasms by histology and immunohistochemistry followed by complete surgical removal remains the standard of care.

<p>Angiosarcoma is a rapidly progressing malignant skin tumor associated with a poor prognosis. We report an immunohistochemical investigation of chemokine receptors in angiosarcoma. The aim is to investigate chemokine receptor expression and, if it is expressed, to histologically discuss its association with age, sex, development site, and histological type. Analyzed were 12 angiosarcoma samples (mean patient age: 75.7 years old) collected by biopsy or surgery from patients at our department by comparing with 4 granuloma telangiectaticum samples (mean patient age: 37.5 years old) and 16 healthy skin samples as controls. CXCR4, CCR6, CCR7, and SDF-1 expressions were immunohistochemically investigated. CXCR4 expression was positive in 6 of the 12 samples. CCR6 and CCR7 were negative in all samples. SDF-1 was positive in 4 samples. Out of the 6 CXCR4-positive samples, 4 were SDF-1-positive. No significant difference associated with age, sex, development site, or histological type was noted in the expression of CXCR4, CCR6, CCR7, or SDF-1. Although CXCR4 is regarded as an index of tumor aggressiveness of malignant melanoma, it is suggested that chemokine receptors, such as CXCR4, do not serve as useful markers of angiosarcoma.</p>

We present a image segmentation method based on deep hypercolumndescriptors which produces state-of-the-art results for thesegmentation of several classes of benign and malignant skin lesions.We achieve a Jaccard index of 0.792 on the 2017 ISIC SkinLesion Segmentation Challenge dataset.
