Background. The aim of the experiment was to determine the influence of sodium selenite and selenium nanoparticles on antioxidant status of rats. Methods. The males of outbreed strain Wistar albino were selected as a model organism. Animals were fed with different forms of selenium. The control group was given mixture without selenium addition, whereas other groups were fed with mixture containing sodium selenite, Se-49 and Se-100 selenium nanoparticles, respectively. The duration of the trial was 30 days. Results. The analysis of blood and liver was performed where concentration of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, and the total selenium content were measured. In liver, a significant reduction in GSSG was found in all experimental groups. Blood samples showed a significant reduction in GSH and an increase in GSSG. Discussion. These results show that selenium nanoparticles may be an alternative to dietary selenium for the animal organism.

Background Selenium is an essential element; however, at higher doses, it can be toxic. Therefore, alternative nanotechnological solutions are required to overcome toxicological issues, rather than conventional alternatives. Nanoparticles show new and promising properties that may be able to suppress toxicity while maintaining the positive effects of selenium on an organism. The aim of the experiment was to determine the influence of sodium selenite and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on the antioxidant status of rats. Methods The males of the outbreed rat strain Wistar albino were selected as a model organism. Animals were fed different forms of selenium. The control group was given a mixture without selenium addition, whereas other groups were fed a mixture containing sodium selenite, Se-49, and Se-100 SeNPs respectively. The duration of the trial was 30 days. Results Analysis of blood and liver was performed where the concentration of reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) glutathione, and total selenium content were measured. In the liver, a significant reduction in GSSG was found for all experiment groups. Blood samples showed a significant reduction in GSH and an increase in GSSG. Discussion These results show that SeNPs may be an alternative to dietary selenium for animal organisms.

Three sets of identical twin cows were used to quantitate the excretion of selenium in feces, urine and milk in response to increments of dietary selenium. The first trial consisted of three test periods, each 8 days long, separated by recovery periods of 5 days. A solution of sodium selenite was applied to the grain portion of the ration to provide 0, 6.0, 12.0, 24.0 and 48.0 or 100.0 mg of sodium selenite per day. Samples of milk, urine and feces were collected on the last 2 days of each treatment period and analyzed for selenium. There was a significant, positive linear (P < 0.05) response between excretion of selenium in feces and increments of dietary selenium. There was a marked but variable response in selenium content of urine to dietary intake but selenium levels in milk were not increased above those of control animals. In a second trial, sodium selenite was fed at the rate of 170 and 260 mg per day for 10 days. These theoretically toxic levels resulted in 10- and 40-fold increases in the selenium levels of feces and urine, respectively, but only a 3-fold increase in selenium content of milk. At these high levels of selenium supplementation the amounts of selenium in the kidney and liver were increased above the normal values. This study shows that selenium in the form of sodium selenite would have to be fed at levels toxic to the cow before there would be any measurable increase of selenium in milk.

Abstract The racing season is considered a critical period for racing pigeons due to the susceptibility to stress and weakening of the birds. One of the ways how to support their health and avoid problems involves supplementation of mineral-vitamin preparations based on selenium and vitamin E, which act as important antioxidants and protect cells against damage. This study investigated the influence of peroral supplementation of selenium at a dose of 0.3 mg Se.kg−1 feed dry matter (DM) in the form of Na2SeO3 and vitamin E 300 mg.ml−1 added to water at a rate of 4 ml.l−1 during 60 days. The supplemented group comprised 14 pigeons and their results were compared with a control group of 14 pigeons fed non-supplemented commercial feed. Blood samples were collected and examined at the beginning of the supplementation period, one day before a 300 km race and after the race. Pigeons from the supplemented group exhibited increased plasma levels of Se and vitamin E, as well as the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) before and after the 300 km race in comparison with the controls. Comparison of the activity of the enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (ASP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and creatinine kinase (CK) at the beginning of the supplementation and one day before the race showed no changes. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in the activity of all investigated enzymes were observed after the race in both groups.

Abstract The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of selected antioxidants (selenium, copper, vitamins E and C) on the antioxidant status of breeding boar ejaculate and ejaculate quality. In the first control group of boars (n = 10), the amount of antioxidants was not increased in feed. The second experimental group (n = 10) received the addition of selenium (0.5 mg/kg of diet), copper (10 mg/kg of diet), vitamin C (350 mg/kg of diet) and vitamin E (70 mg/kg of diet) in feed. The experiment lasted for 90 days. The addition of antioxidants increased GPx (by 28%), selenium content (by 49%; P<0.05), SOD (by 9%; P<0.05) and level of copper (by 63%; P<0.05) in the experimental group of boars. In the control group, the decrease of sperm motility (by 22%; P<0.05) was found at the end of the experiment. Other measured parameters such as ABTS antioxidant capacity, levels of MDA, metallothionein, zinc, ejaculate volume, concentration, total count of sperm and percentage of abnormal sperm cells were not significantly affected. The above mentioned results show that the addition of antioxidants does not increase the ejaculate quality but their lack can damage the quality indicators of boar ejaculate.
