<p>Newly qualified midwives’ self-assessment of education, clinical competence and working conditions</p><p>In Norway, post-graduate nursing programmes are being transformed into master programmes. This occurs without previous evaluation of the study programmes. The level of competence and the requirements of newly qualified are being discussed, and a mentoring programme has been suggested to ensure follow-up and development of clinical competence. In central parts of the country, newly qualified midwives have difficulties getting a permanent full time position, which affects their possibilities to develop clinical competence. An evaluation study of the midwifery program at Vestfold University College has been performed to assess its relevance for professional work, as well as mapping the respondents’ working conditions and their self-assessment of clinical competence. The method used was a survey. The respondents rate the program as good. They lack competence to manage complicated conditions related to the perinatal period, and are inadequate when it comes to issues related to women’s sexual heath. These midwives work part-time, and it may take years to get a permanent position. They rate the follow-up as newly qualified as satisfying, yet they do not feel sufficiently confident during clinical practice. Comprehensive national midwifery competence will require more full time positions and better follow-up of newly qualified. To lay the basis for the content in master programmes, there is a need for a national evaluation of the midwifery programmes and a review of the professional competence of newly qualified.</p>

The modern development of society determines the forms and content of the process of teaching foreign languages. The quantity and quality of information in the field of mastering a foreign language is constantly growing as a means of sociocultural, linguistic and cultural and professional development of an individual. A foreign language is currently considered as an integral part of intercultural communication in various fields of objective reality and the development of a culture of interethnic communication. In the process of teaching a foreign language, technologies are becoming increasingly important which makes it possible to achieve the required level of communicative competence in speaking and writing in a shorter time frame and to recreate a virtual spatial temporal communication environment with native speakers. In this regard, the form of distance learning can be more and more prospective, being psychologically more comfortable for students and teachers; many of its elements can be integrated into other forms of training. The article exposes certain information technologies, the use of which increases the effectiveness of teaching a foreign language in distance, part-time and full-time courses. On the example of specific interactive multimedia Internet resources in the field of learning the German language, the urgent importance of using computerized teaching methods for acquiring and enhancing pronunciation, lexical and grammatical skills and knowledge with the aim of forming linguistic and cultural and professional competence of students is emphasized. At the same time, the article highlights importance of non-verbal forms of communication for achieving the desired effect of verbal communication, while relying on relevant audiovisual Internet resources.

A tanulmányban a felsőoktatás ritkán vizsgált hallgatói csoportjának, a munka és (vagy) család mellett, részidős képzésben tanuló felnőtt hallgatók tanulmányi beruházásait vizsgáltuk. A részidős képzésben tanulókat érintő tudományos jellegű megkeresések leginkább a diplomaszerzést követően történnek a diplomás utánkövetéses vizsgálatok keretében. Ennek során a felsőoktatásban végzettek szakmai életútját munkaerő-piaci szemszögből kísérik figyelemmel, érdeklődve a diploma megszerzését követő karrierállomásokról, a diploma beválthatóságáról, munkaerő-piaci pozicionálásról, a tanulmányokba történő befektetések megtérüléséről és hozamairól. A felnőttoktatás felől közelítve ugyancsak elmondható, hogy a kutatási kérdések szintén szűk körben keresnek választ a felnőttek tanulási aspirációjára vagy eredményességére. Vizsgálatunkban a tanulási döntéseket, tanulási motivációkat és az eredményességet kísérjük figyelemmel, mégpedig a tanulmányi életút függvényében.***In this peaper we wish to deal with a group of students in higher education who usually receive little attention: the students pursuing their studies while they have a full-time job and a family. Sociological research dealing with people earning a degree as part-time students usually reaches the students after graduation, in the form of follow-up examinations. These projects follow the career of graduates from the aspects of the labour market, asking questions about the stations in the career of the individuals after graduation, the return of the investment made into education, the value of the degree in the labour market. Even the research projects approaching the issue from the aspects of higher education usually do not seek an answer to questions regarding the aspirations of the students for learning, or the success of their learning process. In our examination we research the learning decision, motivation and efficiency of mature students in the light of the academic life.

In Latvia the Civil Defence course is a compulsory course for all higher education study programs. The aim of the study was to find out the attitude of the students of pedagogy specialties of the University of Latvia towards the Civil Defence course, to study the students' self-assessment of understanding the most important topics of the Civil Defence course and the most important insights learned by students during acquiring the Civil Defence course. To find out the attitude of the pedagogical specialties students towards the Civil Defence course, a questionnaire of the first-year students was carried out after the acquisition of the course. The responses of full-time and part-time students were compared. The results of the questionnaire showed that the majority of the surveyed students have understood the importance of the Civil Defence course and they consider that this course is necessary for all study programs. After completing the course, most students have understood the most important topics of the Civil Defence course. The majority of surveyed students consider that topics related to national defence should be included in the Civil Defence course. As the most interesting topics students have found first aid, disasters and their classification and disaster management. Students believe that Civil Defence knowledge is needed for being aware of how to deal with emergencies, if necessary, to be able to provide first aid and for better understanding of the functioning of the civil defence system in Latvia. Students see an opportunity to combine the acquiring of Civil Defence course with the mastering of another study course.

This study examines how public policies affect parents’ preferences for a more egalitarian division of paid and unpaid work. Based on the assumption that individuals develop their preferences within a specific policy context, we examine how changes in three policies affect mothers’ and fathers’ work–family preferences: the availability of high-quality, affordable childcare; the right to return to a full-time job after having reduced hours to part-time and an increase in the number of ‘partner months’ in parental leave schemes. Analysing a unique probability sample of parents with young children in Germany from 2015 ( N = 1756), we find that fathers would want to work slightly fewer hours if they had the right to return to a full-time position after working part-time, and mothers would want to work slightly more hours if childcare opportunities were improved. Full-time working parents, moreover, are found to prefer fewer hours independent of the policy setting, while non-employed parents would like to work at least some hours. Last but not least, our analyses show that increasing the number of partner months in the parental leave scheme considerably increases fathers’ preferences for longer and mothers’ preferences for shorter leave. Increasing the number of partner months in parental schemes hence has the greatest potential to increase gender equality.

Abstract The paper focuses on some current differences in the current two-generation approaches in the labour market to employment, working conditions and people management. The findings are based on repeated surveys since 2009 focused on the opinions of full-time and part-time students and graduates of some economic and managerial fields of three universities in the Czech Republic and the opinions of selected employees of several companies. The results show that some approaches to work and working conditions differ significantly by age of respondents.

Abstract Background: Clinical competency is the ability of nurses in playing a professional role in a clinical environment specially emergency department as the quality of the services provided. The present study aimed to compare the clinical competence of the emergency nurses using self-assessment and evaluation methods by head nurses. Method: The study was designed in a descriptive-analytical way, collecting self-assessment questionnaire and evaluation methods by head nurse’s data. 70 nurses working in Emergency Departments of 3 Hospitals were selected and studied for 3 months based on entry requirements to the census. The instrument was a clinical competency questionnaire with questions in 7 functional fields and 63 skills. The data obtained from descriptive and inferential statistics were analyzed by SPSS-16. Result: The viewpoints of nurses and head nurses on the clinical competencies of nurses were assessed at a moderate level in the majority of domains. Nurses defined their clinical competencies at a significantly higher level compared to the head nurses (P<0.05). conclusion : The periodic assessment of emergency nurses as a critical part and the turning point of the hospital can guide the managers and nursing managers to pay attention to professional competence and promote continuing education programs for improving their competencies in this section.

The employment status of 420 Francophone students who graduated in 1991 from an Ontario French-language teacher education program was assessed, one and two years after graduation. One year after graduation, 265 graduates (63%) held full-time teaching positions; 38 (9%) held part-time teaching positions; and 63 (15%) were working as supply teachers. At the two-year follow-up, 6 percent of the respondents who were not employed as teachers at the one year follow-up had signed teaching contracts; whereas 12 percent who had held a teaching position a year earlier had lost their teaching jobs. Fifty seven percent of the respondents were found to be employed as teachers at both the one- and two-year follow-ups. Twenty-five percent of the sample had failed to secure a teaching position at either follow-up.

Improving working conditions in agriculture is of great concern throughout the world. Just as in other industries, many young farm workers prefer to work as salaried employees, which has brought attention to non-family farms as providers of employment opportunities. However, in the presence of a strong need to flexibly respond to weather, there is still difficulty regarding whether workplaces without overworking can exist. This study is based on in-depth surveys of non-family rice farms in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Our findings suggest that even in non-family farms, holiday-setting is done flexibly to account for weather, and systems that allow for harvesting at appropriate times are in place. During the busy farming period, in joint-stock farms, where multiple farmers invest together, full-time employees work overtime. In contrast, in community farms, many community residents take turns for working, which allows work to be done on time. A closer analysis of work records shows that, in either organizational structure, specific members need to overwork. Reasons behind this include issues with sunk costs in the form of monthly wages, lack of skills among part-time employees, and the communication costs of coordinating with many part-time employees.
