This study utilized six genes (12S, 16S, 18S, 28S, COII and H3) from a total of 40 samples to construct maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) phylogenetic trees in order to infer the relationships between the morphologically similar genera Homalosilpha Stål, 1874 and Mimosilpha Bey-Bienko, 1957. The phylogenetic analysis showed the two genera have a close relationship and were recovered as sister groups based on ML and BI analyses. Four new species are described among these samples, i.e., Homalosilpha obtusangula sp. nov., Homalosilpha recta sp. nov., Homalosilpha alba sp. nov. and Homalosilpha clavellata sp. nov. based on morphological and COI data. A key to the worldwide Homalosilpha is provided.

Summary A new species of Aporcelaimellus, collected in a watermelon field in Nigeria, is described, including its morphological and molecular (D2-D3 28S-rDNA, 18r-DNA) characterisation. Aporcelaimellus nigeriensis sp. n. is distinguishable by its 2.76-3.55 mm length, very coarse ventral body pores, lip region offset by deep constriction and 24-27 μm broad odontostyle 30-36 μm long at its dorsal and 28-31 μm at its ventral side, neck 648-779 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 54-60% of total neck length, uterus 300-473 μm or 2.1-3.2 body diam. long and tripartite, V = 49-54, tail short and convex conoid (27-41 μm, c = 72-115, c′ = 0.5-0.7), spicules 108-137 μm long, and 9-10 spaced ventromedian supplements with hiatus. LSU analysis revealed a close relationship of A. nigeriensis sp. n. with other Aporcelaimellus species and questioned, once more, the monophyly of Aporcelaimidae. SSU phylogenetic tree was not able to resolve the relationship between the new species and other closely related species.

<p>Red algal parasites are common within red algae and most parasites are closely related to their host. Red algal parasites can switch hosts and their development is unique. Red algal parasites are poorly known in New Zealand. There are only four parasites described in New Zealand and those are based on morphological characteristics. This thesis focuses on the two red algal parasites Rhodophyllis parasitica sp. nov. and Pterocladiophila hemisphaerica from New Zealand. First, development and phylogeny and distribution of an undescribed red algal parasite growing on Rhodophyllis membranacea was investigated. Microscopy, molecular markers (ITS2, cox1, cox2-3 spacer) and phylogenetic analysis, and herbarium sampling were used to address these questions. The parasite, described as Rhodophyllis parasitica sp. nov. shows a close relationship of all genomes to Rhodophyllis membranacea, which suggests that the parasite evolved from its hosts. The parasite is widely distributed throughout New Zealand. The second parasite, Pterocladiophila hemisphaerica was grouped taxonomically, based on morphology, in the order Gracilariales and parasitizes Pterocladia lucida in the order Gelidiales. Molecular marker were used to reveal the relationship of Pterocladiophila hemisphaerica to its host: if the parasite is grouped in the Gracilariales or the Gelidiales; if host switches might have occurred; and if atp8 is present in the parasite. Nuclear DNA (SSU rRNA, LSU rRNA), mitochondrial (cox1) and plastid regions (rbcL-rbcS spacer) from the parasite were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis performed. New primer were designed to amplify atp8 and genetic analysis performed. Pterocladiophila hemisphaerica evolved in the Florideophytes but neither in the Gracilariales or Gelidiales and the parasite possibly switched hosts at least two times, which was shown by three different origins of chloroplast, mitochondria and nuclear DNA. Atp8 in the parasite is present but probably a pseudogene. Rhodophyllis parasitica sp. nov. is the first described red algal parasite species in New Zealand in 55 years and Pterocladiophila hemisphaerica is the first parasite with organelles and nuclei with different histories of origin.</p>

Many taxa in the Acrididae have controversial phylogenetic positions. A typical example of such controversies is the phylogenetic positions of the genera Caryandoides, Paratoacris, Fer and Longchuanacris, as well as some other related taxa, which were placed in Oxyinae by some authors, but were considered members of the subfamily Catantopinae by others. In this study, the complete mitogenomes of nine species were sequenced using next-generation sequencing, the characteristics of the newly sequenced mitogenomes are presented briefly, and the phylogeny of the Oxyinae and Catantopinae are reconstructed using a selected dataset of mitogenome sequences under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference frameworks. The results show that the four controversial genera were consistently assigned to the subfamily Oxyinae rather than Catantopinae in all phylogenetic trees deduced from different datasets under different frameworks, and this finding is entirely consistent with their morphological characters. Therefore, it is more appropriate to place them in Oxyinae rather than Catantopinae. In addition, the results from our analysis also confirm the membership of the genus Apalacris in Coptacrinae rather than Catantopinae, and indicate the uncertainty in the phylogenetic position of the genus Traulia, and a more in-depth study is necessary to resolve the relationship of Traulia with other catantopine groups or Coptacrinae.

Four species of Mycena possessing a colored lamellar are reported. Of these, Mycena entolomoides is described as new and is distinguished by an incarnate color of the whole lamellae, and M. citrinomarginata, M. purpureofusca, and M. strobilinoidea are recorded for the first time in China. A complete description, drawings and photographs of the morphological characters of M. entolomoides sp. nov. are accompanied by comparisons with closely related taxa. The three species newly recorded in China are considered in agreement with those species in Europe and North America. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences showed that M. entolomoides sp. nov. forms a monophyletic clade, well supported by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference.

A new species Euxaldar daweishanensis Yang, Chang &amp; Chen, sp. nov. is described and illustrated from southwestern China. The female genitalia of the genus Euxaldar is described and presented for the first time. A checklist and key to the known species of the genus are provided. A revised molecular phylogenetic analysis of the family Issidae based on combined partial sequences of 18S, 28S, COI, and Cytb is provided using both Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses.

Two new species of the genus Homaloxestis Meyrick, 1910 are described from Uganda, Africa: H. arcuatus sp. nov. and H. lactizonalis sp. nov. A previously known species of the genus from Uganda, H. hemigastra Meyrick, 1931 is transferred to the genus Furcalis Park as F. hemigastra (Meyrick, 1931), comb. nov. The female of F. hemigastra is reported for the first time and described and illustrated. New distributional data for H. lophophora Janse for DR Congo, Tanzania and Uganda are given, and a maximum likelihood-tree of the four COI barcoded species of Homaloxestis is provided to reconfirm the relationship of H. lophophora Janse and H. cholopis (Meyrick). Diagnosis, descriptions and illustrations of adults, male and/or female genitalia for the new species, and the venation of H. lactizonalis sp. nov. are provided. A checklist of the species of the genus Homaloxestis Meyrick in the Afrotropical region is given.

An original fungal strain has been recovered during an aerobiological survey in the Pech-Merle show cave (France). The use of multi-locus (ITS, LSU, SSU RPB1, RPB2 and TEF-1α) phylogenetic analysis of the strain by maximum likelihood and by Bayesian inference coupled with a morphological characterization allowed us to place it in the Simplicillium genus as Simplicillium pech-merlensis sp. nov. This new species seems morphologically close to S. calcicola and S. album, which were also first isolated from a cave habitat. This paper discusses the phylogenetic place of S. pech-merlensis and some other species in the genus Simplicillium.

Abstract Vriesea is the second largest genus in Tillandsioideae, the most diverse subfamily of Bromeliaceae. Although recent studies focusing on Tillandsioideae have improved the systematics of Vriesea, no consensus has been reached regarding the circumscription of the genus. Here, we present a phylogenetic analysis of core Tillandsioideae using the nuclear gene phyC and plastid data obtained from genome skimming. We investigate evolutionary relationships at the intergeneric level in Vrieseeae and at the intrageneric level in Vriesea s.s. We sampled a comprehensive dataset, including 11 genera of Tillandsioideae and nearly 50% of all known Vriesea spp. Using a genome skimming approach, we obtained a 78 483-bp plastome alignment containing 35 complete and 55 partial protein-coding genes. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed using maximum-likelihood based on three datasets: (1) the 78 483 bp plastome alignment; (2) the nuclear gene phyC and (3) a concatenated alignment of 18 subselected plastid genes + phyC. Additionally, a Bayesian inference was performed on the second and third datasets. These analyses revealed that Vriesea s.s. forms a well-supported clade encompassing most of the species of the genus. However, our results also identified several remaining issues in the systematics of Vriesea, including a few species nested in Tillandsia and Stigmatodon. Finally, we recognize some putative groups within Vriesea s.s., which we discuss in the light of their morphological and ecological characteristics.

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a small non-coding RNA that functions in the epigenetics control of gene expression, which can be used as a useful biomarker for diseases. Anti-NMDA receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is an acute autoimmune disorder. Some patients have been found to have tumors, specifically teratomas. This disease occurs more often in females than in males. Most of them have a significant recovery after tumor resection, which shows that the tumor may induce anti-NMDAR encephalitis. In this study, I review microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers that are associated with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and related tumors, respectively. To the best of my knowledge, there has not been any research in the literature investigating the relationship between anti-NMDAR encephalitis and tumors through their miRNA biomarkers. I adopt a phylogenetic analysis to plot the phylogenetic trees of their miRNA biomarkers. From the analyzed results, it may be concluded that (i) there is a relationship between these tumors and anti-NMDAR encephalitis, and (ii) this disease occurs more often in females than in males. This sheds light on this issue through miRNA intervention.
