The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is conducting studies for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to assess the capability, effectiveness, and reliability of ultrasonic testing (UT) as a replacement method for radiographic testing (RT) for volumetric examination of nuclear power plant (NPP) components. This particular study focused on evaluating the use of phased-array (PA) UT on carbon steel plate welds. Welding fabrication flaws included a combination of planar and volumetric types; for example, incomplete fusion, lack of penetration, cracks, porosity, and slag inclusions. The examinations were conducted using PAUT techniques applied primarily for detection and flaw type characterization. This paper will discuss the results of using PAUT in lieu of RT for detection and classification of fabrication flaws in carbon steel plate welds.

The uneven surface of the weld seam makes eddy current testing more susceptible to the lift-off effect of the probe. Therefore, the defect of carbon steel plate welds has always been a difficult problem in eddy current testing. This study aimed to design a new type of eddy current orthogonal axial probe and establish the finite element simulation model of the probe. The effect of the probe structure, coil turns, and coil size on the detection sensitivity was simulated. Further, a designed orthogonal axial probe was used to conduct a systematic experiment on the weld of carbon steel specimens, and the 0.2 mm width and 1 mm depth of weld defects of carbon steel plates were effectively detected. The experimental results showed that the new orthogonal axial eddy current probe effectively suppressed the unevenness effect of the weld surface on the lift-off effect during the detection process.

The casting compounding process for copper-steel composite material has broad prospects of application, but due to the lack of supporting theories (especially the bonding mechanism of copper-steel at high temperatures), it is developing slowly. In this research, copper-steel composite materials for different casting temperatures have been prepared by the casting compound process. The results show that, for the casting compound process, the stable copper-steel transition layer can be formed in a short time, and the bonding of copper and low carbon steel is the result of both the diffusion of Cu in low carbon steel and the dissolution of Fe in molten copper. The diffusion coefficient of Cu in the low carbon steel is mainly concentrated in the range of 4.0 × 10−15–8.0 × 10−14 m2/s. However, for casting compound process of copper-steel, as the temperature rises the thickness of the copper-steel transition layer gradually decreases, while the Fe content in the copper layer gradually increases. At the same time, the analysis of the glow discharge results shows that, during the solid-liquid composite process of copper-steel, the element C in steel has a great influence. As the temperature rises, the segregation of C intensifies seriously; the peak of the C content moves toward the copper side and its value is gradually increases. The segregation of C would reduce the melting point of the steel and cause irregular fluctuations of the diffusion of Cu in low carbon steel. Therefore, a relatively lower molten copper temperature is more conducive to the preparation of copper-steel composite materials.

Induced residual stresses on AISI 1020 low carbon steel plate during Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process was evaluated in this study using experimental and Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature range measured from the welding experimentation was 251°C-423°C, while the temperature range measured from the FEM was 230°C-563°C; whereas, the residual stress range measured from the welding experimentation was 144MPa-402Mpa, while the residual range measured from the FEM was 233-477MPa respectively. Comparing the temperature and stress results obtained from both methods, it was observed that the range of temperature and residual stresses measured were not exactly the same due to the principles at which both methods operate but disparities between the methods were not outrageous. However, these values can be fed back to optimization tools to obtain optimal parameters for best practices.  Results of the induced stress distribution was created from a static study where the thermal results were used as loading conditions and it was observed that the temperature increased as the von-Mises stress increased, indicating that induced stresses in welded component may hamper the longevity of such component in service condition. Hence, post-weld heat treatment is imperative in order to stress relieve metals after welding operation and improve their service life.

<p><em>A non-destructive test method is the main method to examine most of the materials, composite materials in particular. There are too many </em><em>Non-Destructive Test (</em><em>NDT) methods to inspect the materials such as, Visual Inspection, Liquid Penetrate Inspection, Eddy-Current Inspection, Phased Array Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection and Ultrasonic Inspection</em><em>.</em></p><p><em>This paper aims to creat a unified methodology for engineers depending on reaserch onion to study the inspection of the composite materials.</em></p><p><em>The researchers concluded that NDT method is the most suitable method for testing any materials and the composite materials. They also recommended to choose the most suitable NDT method as every materials and composite materials have its own properties as well as the inspection methods had its own capabilities and limitations. </em></p>
