Water quality assessment has been carried out in the Hakaluki Haor of greater Sylhet district during May, 2013 to February, 2014. Water samples were collected from 5 spots during 4 seasons and a total of 15 physico-chemical parameters were studied. Significant seasonal variation was observed in all seasons among physico-chemical parameters. pH values varied from 5.9 - 7.1, water temperature varied from 23.7 – 26.7OC, transference varied from 23-53 cm, TSS varied from 18.1-192 mg/l, TDS varied 25-193.5 mg/l, EC varied from 30-680 ?s/cm , DO content of water varied from 4.6 - 5.6mg/l, BOD varied from 0.2-2.614 mg/l, COD varied from 38-312 mg/l, NO3-N varied from 0.1-30.4 mg/l, NH3 varied from 0.9-2.18 mg/l, alkalinity varied from 12-42 mg/l and PO4 varied from 0.9 -13.4 (mg/l). Water samples were collected from three points of Louhajong river (Dighulia, Kagmari Bridge and Oloa) to see the seasonal variation in physico-chemical parameters. The results revealed that some of the parameters such as TDS, alkalinity and acidity have exceeded the standard level in dry season in all of the points, which are unsuitable for different purposes including fish culture. During dry and wet seasons the highest concentrations of BOD was recorded as 2.0 and 0.8 ppm at Kagmari Bridge (point-2) respectively. DO ranged from 1.4 to 3.1 and 2.4 to 3.8 ppm during dry and wet seasons. Maximum and minimum EC was recorded as 890 and 130 ?s/cm at Dighulia (point-1) during dry and wet seasons. The results suggest that at wet season Louhajong river may be suitable for fish culture and other purposes.Bangladesh J. Sci. Res. 28(1): 9-16, June-2015

Seasonal variation on bacterial load irrespective of heterotrophic and enteric bacteria was noticed in Gulshan lack of Dhaka Metropolitan city. The lowest number (1.56×106 cfu/100 ml) in the summer and the highest (19.03×106 cfu/100 ml) were recorded during winter. Among the isolated bacteria 32 were studied in details and provisionally identified as Bacillus cereus (1), B. sphaericus (1), B. subtilis (1), B. brevis (2), B. pasteuri (1), B. stearothermophilus (1), B. azotoformans (1), B. pantothenticus (1), B. licheniformis (1), B. circulans (1), B. insolitus (1), Planococcus citrius (1), Micrococcus sedentarius (1), Pseudomonas. syringae (4), P. aeruginosa (1), P. cichorii (1), Escherichia (2), Klebsiella (1), Aeromonas (1), Proteus (1), Enterobacter (1), Salmonella (2), Yersinia (1), Shigella (1), Hafnia (1), and Alcaligens (1). The temperature and pH of the water samples varied between 24.3 and 29.2º C and 6.54 and 7.12, respectively. Chemical contents (mg/l) like NH4 +-N, NO3 --N and phosphorus ranged 3.06 (Winter) to 14.86 (Summer), 0.32 (in Rainy season) to 13.02 (Summer) and 0.81 (Rainy season) to 1.86 (Summer), respectively. The enteric bacterial load (0.03 × 105 cfu/100 ml in Rainy season to 21.2 × 105 cfu/100 ml in Winter) and the presence of Escherichia, Aeromonas, Enterobacter, Pseudonomas in the samples indicated significant level of microbial pollution of the lake. The present study examined some physico-chemical characteristics (temperature, pH, total hardness, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solid(TDS), conductivity, transparency, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), acidity and alkalinity) and some heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni) concentration of Stubbs Creek, Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria between August 2014 and July, 2015. Six sampling stations (Mkpanak, Okpot Ikot, Ebana Mbri, Esit Eket, Okpuk and Ikot Ebia Anam) in Stubbs Creek were selected. Water samples were analyzed using APHA-AWWA-WPCF methods while heavy metals in the water samples were digested and determined using UNICAM 939 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The mean values of water parameters of Stubbs Creek are: temperature (27.22 ± 0.230C); pH (6.83 ± 0.13), DO (3.86 ± 0.20 mg/L), BOD (2.84 ± 0.11 mg/L), conductivity (522.23 ±69.12 µScm-1), TDS (288.83 ± 39.50 mg/L), transparency (0.86 ± 0.05m), alkalinity (95.51± 6.44mg/L), acidity (97.03±7.45) and total hardness(12.11±1.55).Only TDS, conductivity, alkalinity and total hardness showed significant (p<0.05) spatial variation across the sampling stations. However, the values of temperature, TDS, conductivity, alkalinity and total hardness indicated significant seasonal variation. Similarly, there were no significant (p<0.05) spatial and seasonal variation in the values of heavy metals recorded across the sampling stations. All the physico-chemical parameters and heavy metals in this study are below the maximum permissible limit recommended by WHO. The result showed that Stubbs Creek is less polluted at present and safe for the biota. However, responsible use of the water bodies by all and sundry should be maintained in order to preclude problems common with effluents discharge.
