“Awareness among Patients Regarding Dental Implants as A Treatment Option for Replacing Missing Teeth In Melmaruvathur Population”.

ABSTRACT Background Treatment with dental implants has become increasingly important in the range of prosthodontic treatment. Significant improvements in oral rehabilitation particularly in edentulous individuals have been seen. In Adhiparasakthi Dental College, Melmaruvathur, a survey was made to evaluate awareness among patients for dental implants, their level of knowledge, and attitude toward replacement of missing teeth by dental implants. Materials and methods A survey of 480 people was conducted through a printed questionnaire and completed by willing respondents. The questionnaires were prepared in English and Tamil language to enable better understanding and completion. Results Of the 510 people surveyed, 480 responses were retrieved, of which 331 were aware of dental implant treatment in Melmaruvathur, Tamil Nadu. Among them, 304 respondents were aware that implants could be used for replacement of missing teeth. Most of the respondents stated that dental implants were placed in the jawbone, followed by gums. Only 41% respondents assumed that implants last for a lifetime and only 35% of respondents believe that poor oral hygiene was the most common cause of implant failure. Conclusion More dental education programs are needed to improve understanding of the importance of restoration of missing teeth. General implant awareness levels are satisfactory. However, increased awareness of patients for restoration of missing tooth with dental implants is necessary. Dental education programs with special emphasis on advantages, treatment, maintenance, and postoperative care of dental implant therapy are needed. BACKGROUND In this study, we wanted to assess the awareness, knowledge, and acceptance of dental implants as a treatment modality among patients visiting A.B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, Karnataka. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 patients visiting A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, using a self-explanatory questionnaire. RESULTS The results of this survey indicate that 51 % of the patients were not aware of implant therapy as a treatment option for replacing missing teeth and 44.9 % were aware about it. 38 % of the patients received information about implants from dentist and 38 % of them received from books / magazine / internet. 44.3 % of the patients were willing to undergo implant therapy as a treatment option if needed but 25.8 % of the patients were not willing. 29.9 % of them were open to the idea of implants but were not sure. 58.8 % of the patients rated implant treatment as not affordable and 41.2 % rated it as affordable. The most common reason listed for not opting implant treatment was found to be the cost of the treatment (45.1 %), 27.5 % of the patients were not clear about the procedure and 11.8 % of them stated long treatment time as the disadvantage of implant therapy. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed a low level of awareness (44.9 %) among the patients regarding dental implants although, 44.3 % showed a positive attitude towards implant therapy. The study also revealed the need for further studies involving the general population as majority of the patients in this study were from a low socio-economic background. 1. Background: Loss of permanent teeth is very common, affected chewing function, speech and aesthetics; restoration of missing teeth with dental implant has several advantages, but we need thoroughly study the clinical and X ray features at the position at missing teeth, then to select the type of implant and make the best plan for the dental implant patients. 2. Materials and method: Cross-section descriptive study. From January 2009 to November 2010, study with 56 patients with 102 implants of MIS and Megagen systems at the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy and Vietnam-Cuba Hospital in Ha Noi. 3. Results: Distributed equally in male and female, common ages 40 – 59 (55,4%), the majority of missing teeth occurs in the lower jaw (63,8%) and especially, the teeth 36 and 46 (25,4%). The majority of missing teeth due to dental caries, dental pulp and apical diseases (64,7%) of the molar teeth (51,9%); the most position of missing tooth have enough bone for dental implants (87,3%), time of tooth loss and bone status in the position of tooth loss are related to each other (p < 0,01). Diameter and length of implant usually used 4.0 – 6.0 mm (63,7%) and 8.5 – 13.0 mm (83,3%). 4. Conclusion: Clinical and X ray features of edentulous patients has an important role in determining the type of implants and treatment planning of dental implants. AbstractDental implants are commonly used to repair missing teeth. The implant surface plays a critical role in promoting osseointegration and implant success. However, little information is available about which implant surface treatment technology best promotes osseointegration and implant stability. The aim of this network meta-analysis was to evaluate the osseointegration and stability of four commonly used dental implants (SLA, SLActive, TiUnite, and Osseotite). The protocol of the current meta-analysis is registered in PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews) under the code CRD42020190907 (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk). We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA and Cochrane Recommendations. Medline (PubMed), Cochrane Library, Embase, and the Web of Science databases were searched. Only randomized controlled trials were considered. Twelve studies were included in the current network meta-analysis, eleven studies were included concerning the osseointegration effect and five studies were included for stability analysis (four studies were used to assess both stability and osseointegration). Rank possibility shows that the SLActive surface best promoted bone formation at an early healing stage and TiUnite seemed to be the best surface for overall osseointegration. For stability, TiUnite seemed to be the best surface. The present network meta-analysis showed that the SLActive surface has the potential to promote osseointegration at an early stage. The TiUnite surface had the best effect on osseointegration regarding the overall healing period. The TiUnite surface also had the best effect in stability.

ABSTRACT Hypodontia is the most prevalent craniofacial malformation in mankind. It may present a wide variety of manifestations and, depending on the number and location of missing teeth, it may affect the esthetics, mastication, speech and occlusal balance. This paper discusses the therapeutic approaches to solve this condition, describing a case report with hypodontia of one mandibular lateral incisor, which treatment option included space closure at the region of hypodontia associated with composite resin restorations in the mandibular central incisors. The three-year follow-up after treatment revealed occlusal stability, adequate intercuspation in Class I relationship and excellent micro and macroesthetics.

Abstract Dental implants are the new era in the field of dentistry providing the new opportunities to the clinicians to manage their patients with missing teeth. The procedure is more technique sensitive in maxilla than mandible. The scenario becomes even more challenging with severely resorbed maxillary arches. The idea of zygomatic bone implants put forward the new approach to manage such patients.
