Sloshing affects the intact and damage stability of the ship, which causes variation in dynamic metacentric height (GM) under critical load conditions. The transient flooding soon after the ship damage is analyzed, with floodwater accumulation in large space and causing the ship to suffer huge heel angles. The ship motion and stability changes when sloshing becomes high in partially flooded compartments. Most of the previous researches focus on the motion response of ship alone, hence the variation of stability due to sloshing is to be more critically studied. In the present study, three critical damage locations are identified and flooding through these locations are analyzed using the volume of fluids method. The method focus on finding damage ship motion response, flood water dynamics, and coupled dynamics of both. This is studied using the numerical method FLOW3D. Motion and stability behaviour will be different for different damage locations; hence portside, starboard-side, and aft-end bottom damage cases are considered. The effect of compartment shape and damage location on motion response and stability of the damaged ship is highlighted.

Safety is the key requirement to any nuclear power installation. Various factors affect safety during operation of the nuclear power installation. These factors are difficult to study due to the high economic costs. This problem can be solved by developing prototype models to conduct the research of many complex processes. Dynamic impact on the ship installation is one of these processes. The most significant impact is the impact on the natural circulation of the coolant, that is one of the basic emergency safety systems. Also, it is a promising way to ensure movement in the main circulation circuit. The purpose of this paper is to assess the influence of external dynamic forces on the processes of natural circulation. For the study a testing bench has been developed that simulates one of the circulation loops of the reactor unit. The basic method to obtain experimental data is temperature sounding of the specific sections of the circulation route. A mathematical model has been developed that describes this process. The model is based on the equations of momentum conservation and heat balance. In accordance with the experimental data, the calculation of natural circulation for static and dynamic modes has been carried out. A mathematical model to describe this process has been developed. A comparative analysis of the results of calculating the static and dynamic modes has been carried out. It is founded out that the decrease of mass flow rate is about 10 % as compared with the static regime. It confirms the qualitative effect of ship motion on natural circulation. The practical significance of the research is the development of a model under conditions of ship motion, as well as verification of the model at the testing bench. The results show a significant effect of ship motion on the mass flow rate of the coolant in the case of natural circulation. Thus, to ensure the required safety of ship installations, it is recommended to conduct a study of natural circulation in accordance with the developed model under conditions of maximum possible ship motion.

Considering the nature of marine accidents, even a single accident can result in significant damage to the environment and property, as well as loss of life. Therefore, the initial response should be rapid and accurate, and various decision support systems have been developed to achieve this. Research on simulating progressive flooding on board immediately after an accident is being actively conducted, but this requires high levels of computing power. In this study, a methodology for converting simulated ship motion data into a ship motion database is presented. The model of a training ship from the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology and KRISO in-house code SMTP was used for ship motion computations. The short-time Fourier transform was used to convert time-series motion data into a spectrogram motion database. A methodology for deriving a predicted location of the damage center is presented. The candidate locations of the damage centers were obtained by comparing the root mean square error values of the ship motion database from the simulation and real-time ship motion data. Finally, a probability function was suggested to confirm the predicted location of the damage center. Using 100 randomly selected test cases, our method showed 95% accuracy.

During replenishment at sea operations the interaction between the two vessels travelling side by side can cause significant motions in the smaller vessel and affect the relative separation between their replenishment points. A study into these motions has been conducted including theoretical predictions and model experiments. The model tests investigated the influence of supply ship displacement and longitudinal separation on the ships’ motions. The data obtained from the experimental study has been used to validate a theoretical ship motion prediction method based on a 3-D zero-speed Green function with a forward speed correction in the frequency domain. The results were also used to estimate the expected extreme roll angle of the receiving vessel, and the relative motion between the vessels, during replenishment at sea operations in a typical irregular seaway. A significant increase in the frigate’s roll response was found to occur with an increase of the supply ship displacement, whilst a reduction in motion for the receiving vessel resulted from an increase in longitudinal separation between the vessels. It is proposed that to determine the optimal vessel separation it is vital that the motions of the vessels are not considered in isolation and all motions need to be considered for both vessels simultaneously.
