The discovery of quantized electric conductance by the group of van Wees in 1988 was a major breakthrough in physics. A decade later, the group of Schwab has proven the existence of quantized thermal conductance. Advancing from these and many other aspects of the quantized conductances in other phenomena of nature, the concept of quantized entropy current can be established and it eases the description of a transferred quantized energy package. This might yield a universal transport behavior of the microscopic world. During the transfer of a single energy quantum, hν, between two neighboring domains, the minimum entropy increment is calculated. It is pointed out that the possible existence of the minimal entropy transfer can be formulated. Moreover, as a new result, it is proved that this minimal entropy transfer principle is equivalent to the Lagrangian description of thermodynamics.

This article is devoted to the study of the Boolean-valued universe as an algebraic system. We start with the logical backgrounds of the notion and present the formalism of extending the syntax of Boolean truth values by the use of definable symbols, internal classes, outer terms and external Boolean-valued classes. Next, we enrich the collection of Boolean-valued research tools with the technique of partial elements and the corresponding joins, mixings and ascents. Passing on to the set-theoretic signature, we prove that bounded formulas are absolute for transitive Boolean-valued subsystems. We also introduce and study intensional, predicative, cyclic and regular Boolean-valued systems, examine the maximum principle, and analyze its relationship with the ascent and mixing principles. The main applications relate to the universe over an arbitrary extensional Booleanvalued system. A close interrelation is established between such a universe and the intensional hierarchy. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the Boolean-valued universe up to a unique isomorphism and show that the conditions in the corresponding axiomatic characterization are logically independent. We also describe the structure of the universe by means of several cumulative hierarchies. Another application, based on the quantifier hierarchy of formulas, improves the transfer principle for the canonical embedding in the Boolean-valued universe.

This paper asks whether prioritarianism--the view that social welfare orderings should give explicit priority to the worse-off--is consistent with the normative theory of equality of opportunity. We show that there are inherent tensions between some of the axioms underpinning prioritarianism and the principles underlying equality of opportunity; but also that these inconsistencies vanish under plausible adjustments to the domains of two key axioms, namely anonymity and the transfer principle. That is: reconciling prioritarianism and equality of opportunity is possible but allowing room for individual responsibility within prioritarianism requires compromises regarding the nature and scope of both impartiality and inequality aversion. The precise nature of the compromises depends on the specific variant of the theory of equality of opportunity that is adopted, and we define classes of social welfare functions and discuss relevant dominance conditions for six such variants. The conflicts and the paths to reconciliation are illustrated in an application to South Africa between 2008 and 2017, where results suggest broad empirical agreement among the different approaches. AbstractFiber optical strain sensors are used to measure the strain at a particular sensor position inside the fiber. In order to deduce the strain in the surrounding matrix material, one can employ the strain transfer principle. Its application is based on the assumption that the presence of the fiber does not impede the deformation of the matrix material in fiber direction. In fact, the strain transfer principle implies that the strain in fiber direction inside the fiber carries over verbatim to the strain inside the matrix material. For a comparatively soft matrix material, however, this underlying assumption may not be valid. To overcome this drawback, we propose to superimpose the matrix material with a one-dimensional model of the fiber, which takes into account its elastic properties. The finite element solution of this model yields a more accurate prediction of the strain inside the fiber in fiber direction at low computational costs.

This is a continuation of the authors’ previous study of the geometric characterizations of the preduals of injective Banach lattices. We seek the properties of the unit ball of a Banach space which make the space isometric or isomorphic to an injective Banach lattice. The study bases on the Boolean valued transfer principle for injective Banach lattices. The latter states that each such lattice serves as an interpretation of an AL-space in an appropriate Boolean valued model of set theory. External identification of the internal Boolean valued properties of the corresponding AL-spaces yields a characterization of injective Banach lattices among Banach spaces and ordered Banach spaces. We also describe the structure of the dual space and present some dual characterization of injective Banach lattices.

Determining the level of income inequality requires the adoption of a specific measurement methodology. The aim of the study was to review and discuss the methodologies used to measure income inequality. Four measures are presented, each based on different assumptions. These measures were the Gini coefficient, Theil coefficient, Kukuła coefficient and unevenness coefficient. The first three measures, and in particular the Gini coefficient, are commonly described in the literature, while the unevenness coefficient is the author’s proposal for measuring income inequality. The empirical material for the research consists of data on the distribution of disposable income by decile groups in households in Poland for the years 2005–2017. The most important issue in practice regarding the measurement of income inequality was the transfer principle. Depending on the methodology adopted, the transfer of income is treated differently. The Gini, Theil and Kukula coefficients respond to any change in the income distribution, while the unevenness coefficient only to changes above the average. In a situation where the Gini coefficient (Theil and Kukula) decreases (increases), the level of inequality decreases (increases), but it is not known which transfers led to such a result. The decreasing (growing) unevenness coefficient means that these were transfers from groups with shares in income above (below) the average for groups with shares below (above) the average.

This paper aims to find out the types of pragmatic failures that can lead to incorrect understanding of meaning by the audience. Pragmatic failure in translation consists of two failures, namely: pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Pragmalinguistic failures in translation are analyzed using speech act theory proposed by Searle and deixis theory proposed by Levinson. Sociopragmatic failures in translation are analyzed using the principle of cooperation theory proposed by Grice and the principle of politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. One hundred seventy-six pragmatic failures are found in the subtitles of Moonlight movie, which is divided into one hundred thirty-six pragmalinguistic failures and forty sociopragmatic failures. Pragmalinguistic failures that occur are the failures to transfer speech acts and deixis of oral speech into subtitles. Sociopragmatic failures that occur are the failures to transfer principle of cooperation of oral speech into subtitles.
