Abstract. Our approach of a closed-loop combustion control is built on an intensively evaluated robust cylinder pressure sensor with integrated smart electronics and an openly programmed engine control unit. The presented pressure sensor consists of a steel membrane and a highly strain-sensitive thin film with laser-welded electrical contacts. All components are optimized for reliable operation at high temperatures. The sensor setup safely converts the in-cylinder pressure of a combustion engine at temperatures of up to 200 ∘C into the desired electrical values. Furthermore, the embedded smart electronics provides a fast analogue to digital conversion and subsequently computes significant combustion parameters in real time, based on implemented thermodynamic equations, namely the 50 % mass fraction burned, the indicated mean effective pressure, the maximum pressure and a digital value, which represents the intensity of knocking. Only these aggregated parameters – not the running pressure values – are sent to the engine control unit. The data communication between the smart sensor and the engine control unit is based on the controller area network bus system, which is widely spread in the automotive industry and allows a robust data transfer minimizing electrical interferences. The established closed-loop combustion control is able to control the ignition angle in accordance with the 50 % mass fraction burned at a certain crankshaft angle. With this loop, the combustion engine is controlled and run efficiently even if the ignition angle is intentionally incorrectly adjusted. The controlled and automatic correction of simulated ageing effects is demonstrated as well as the self-adjustment of an efficient operation when different fuels are used. In addition, our approach saves the computing capacity of the engine control unit by outsourcing the data processing to the sensor system.

Contrary to energy, exergy may be destroyed due to irreversibility. Exergy analysis can be used to reveal the location, and amount of energy losses of engines. Despite the importance of the exergy analysis, there is a lack of information in this area, especially when the engine is fueled with biodiesel–diesel fuel blends under various injection operating parameters. Thus, in this research, the exergy analysis of a direct-injection diesel engine using biodiesel–diesel fuel blends was performed. The fuel blends (B0, B20, B40, and B100) were injected into cylinders at pressures of 200 and 215 bars. Moreover, the simulation of exergy and energy analyses was done by homemade code. The simulation model was verified by compression of experimental and simulation in-cylinder pressure data. The results showed there was good agreement between simulation data and experimental ones. Results indicated that the highest level of in-cylinder pressure at injection pressure of 215 bars is more than that of 200 bars. Moreover, by increasing the percentage of biodiesel, the heat transfer exergy, irreversibility, burnt fuel, and exergy indicator decreased, but the ratio of these exergy parameters (except for heat transfer exergy) to fuel exergy increased. These ratios increased from 46 to 50.54% for work transfer exergy, 16.57 to 17.97% for irreversibility, and decreased from 16 to 15.49% for heat transfer exergy. In addition, these ratios at 215 bars are higher than at 200 bars for all fuels. However, with increasing the injection pressure and biodiesel concentration in fuel blends, the exergy and energy efficiencies increased.

In internal combustion engine research, cylinder pressure measurements provide valuable information about the underlying thermodynamic and combustion processes, and are typically collected in ensembles of several 100 traces. Although in some particular fields of combustion research all traces are analyzed, in most cases only one trace is studied because analyzing all the traces is impractical due to the large number of collected samples. Instead, an ensemble-averaged pressure trace is commonly calculated and used for analysis. However, this pressure trace is highly smoothed and dynamic information is lost during the averaging process. With the average trace, pressure rise rates are lower and pressure oscillations such as the ones resulting from combustion knock are lost. In this work, a statistical method was developed to determine the “most representative cycle,” which is the cycle from the ensemble that has the pressure trace most representative of the engine operating condition. Eleven characteristic parameters are computed from each pressure trace and probabilistic distributions are obtained for each of the parameters using all the traces in the ensemble. Finally, the most representative cycle is selected by means of a cost function minimization. The benefits of this method are illustrated using experimental data from four very different engine platforms, under four different combustion modes and over a range of operating conditions.

The effects of compression ratio and fuel delivery advance angle on the combustion and emission characteristics of premixed methanol charge induced ignition by Fischer Tropsch diesel engine were investigated using a CY25TQ diesel engine. In the process of reducing the compression ratio from 16.9 to 15.4, the starting point of combustion is fluctuating, the peak of in-cylinder pressure and the maximum pressure increase rate decrease by 44.5% and 37.7% respectively. The peak instantaneous heat release rate increases by 54.4%. HC and CO emissions are on a rising trend. NOx and soot emissions were greatly decreased. The soot emission has the biggest drop of 50%. Reducing the fuel delivery advance angle will make the peak of in-cylinder pressure and the peak of pressure rise rate increase while the peak of heat release rate decreases. The soot emission is negatively correlated with the fuel delivery advance angle. When the fuel delivery advance angle is 16° CA, the soot emissions increased the most by 130%.

AbstractReactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engines have a high thermal efficiency as well as low emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, there is a conflict between combustion stability and harmful emissions at high engine load. Therefore, this work presented a novel approach for regulating n-butanol/methyl oleate dual fuel RCCI at high engine load in attaining lower pollutant emissions while maintaining stable combustion and avoiding excessive in-cylinder pressure. The tests were conducted on a single cylinder engine under rated speed and 90% full load. In this study, n-butanol was selected as a low-reactivity fuel for port injection, and n-butanol/methyl oleate blended fuel was used for in-cylinder direct injection. Combustion and emission characteristics of the engine were first investigated with varied ratios of n-butanol port injection (PFI) and direct injection (DI). Results showed that as the ratio of n-butanol PFI and DI rose, the peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate increased, while NOx and soot emissions reduced, and carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions increased under most test conditions. When RNBPI = 40% and RNBDI = 20%, the soot and NOx emissions of the engine were near the lowest values of all test conditions, yet the peak in-cylinder pressure and fuel consumption could not increase significantly. Therefore, the possibility of optimizing the combustion process and lowering emissions by adjusting the pilot injection strategy was investigated utilizing these fuel injection ratios. The results revealed that with an appropriate pilot injection ratio and interval, the peak in-cylinder pressure and NOx emission were definitely reduced, while soot, CO, and HC emissions did not significantly increase.

Abstract In improving performance and reducing exhaust emissions in combustion engines, the addition of ozone to the air supplied in the combustion chamber was studied. In this research, ozone can be produced using plasma technology (plasma-ozone) which is a simple and eco-friendly technology. Plasma-ozone was generated using the Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) method. Air is passed in plasma-ozone reactors at different voltages with an ozone variation of 3 mg, 12 mg, 15 mg and 18 mg is obtained. Ozone concentration was detected using an Ozone meter O3 Air Quality Detector and OPA-100 was used to determine exhaust emissions. The result showed that the addition of ozone to the air supply has no significant effect on brake power but is able to increase specific fuel consumption, increase cylinder pressure, shorten combustion processes, and reduce heat release values. The addition of ozone decreases the opacity of exhaust emissions in TV-1 diesel engines become more eco-friendly.

Abstract The persistent efforts among the researchers are being done to reduce emissions by the exploration of different alternative fuels. The application of alternative fuel is also found to influence engine vibration. The present study explores the potential connection between the change of the engine operating parameters and the engine vibration pattern. The objective is to analyse the effect of alternative fuel on engine vibration and performance. The experiments are performed on two different engines of single cylinder and twin-cylinder variants at the load range of 0 to 34Nm, with steps of 6.8Nm and at the constant speed of 1500rpm. The single cylinder engine, fuelled with only diesel mode, is tested at two compression ratios of 16.5 and 17.5. While, the twin-cylinder engine with a constant compression ratio of 16.5, is tested at both diesel unifuel and diesel-compressed natural gas dual-fuel modes. Further, in dual-fuel mode, tests are conducted with compressed natural gas substitutions of 40%, 60% and 80% for given loads and speed. The engine vibration signatures are measured in terms of root mean square acceleration, representing the amplitude of vibration. The combustion parameters considered are cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, heat release rate and ignition delay. At higher loads, the vibration amplitude increases along with the cylinder pressure. The maximum peak cylinder pressure of 95bar is found in the case of the single cylinder engine at the highest load condition that also produced a peak vibration of 3219m/s2.

The waste cooking biodiesel's steady-state coefficient of friction rate of fuel blends are B90 (18.2%), B60 (7.2%), B20 (16.72%), B10 (30.8%), and diesel (38.77%) higher compared with B40 fuel blend and wear scar diameter of the fuel blends from B40 to B100 had a minimal range of 0.5mm. The flash temperature parameter results higher from B40 to B100 fuel blends, and the corrosion rate was minimal for B40 and B50 fuel blends. Afterward, the fuel blend B40 (40% WCO+60% Diesel fuel) was chosen as fuel, along with Cerium (25ppm), Zinc (25ppm), and Titanium nanoparticles (25ppm) were selected as fuel additives. The B40+D60+Titanium (25ppm) blend resulted in improved BTE and 3.83% lowered BSEC comparison with diesel fuel. Then the fuel blend, B40+D80+Titanium (25ppm), resulted in 2.08% reduced HC, 36.36% CO, and 16.25% smoke emissions, along with marginally 8.5% higher NOx emissions comparison with diesel fuel. Also, the fuel blend, B40+D80+Titanium (25ppm) combustions characteristics are the equivalent trend of cylinder pressure (58.82 bar) and HRR (66.65 J/deg CA) related to diesel fuel at peak load.
