This review paper is focused on applying and advancing the Internalization theory to address some of the most current gaps. This paper draws together and synthesizes the lessons learned from the various papers on internalization theory integrated with a business history perspective in this special issue.The review, therefore, is providing a comprehensive understanding of the internalization theory and how it will accommodate the issue of multinationals from emerging economies. To this end, the core point of this paper review focused on demonstrating how to better understand internalization theory and to show how the general internalization theory could be applicable in emerging economy multinationals. While discussing internalization theory and emerging multinationals important insights revealed complementing the business theory with business history to rethink using this two for current business phenomena. Finally, the paper discusses potential avenues for future research and conclusions.

On the basis of clarifying the teachers' Ethics internalization theory, this paper analyzes the typical dilemma in teachers' Ethics internalization . To resolve these problems, this paper construct an overall framework, including security mechanism, normative mechanism, education mechanism, evaluation mechanism and supervision mechanism, which the external conditions are used to constantly strengthen the moral needs of the subject,then enhance the consciousness of moral internalization, improve the effectiveness of teachers' moral construction.

© 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited. Purpose: Firm internalization is a central concept within the business strategy literature, as part of the broader social sciences. The purpose of this paper is to show how and where MNE internalization theory can benefit from a social identity theory (SIT) perspective to better understand 21st-century multinational enterprises (MNEs). Design/methodology/approach: This paper provides a review and future research agenda for the use of SIT related to MNE internalization theory. The authors complement an evolutionary review of SIT literature with a systematic bibliometric analysis identifying specific thematic gaps. Extending Buckley and Casson’s review of and future research agenda for MNE internalization theory, the authors propose three specific future research directions along with eight guiding research questions. Findings: International business (IB) scholars are familiar with limited aspects of SIT and apply it only in certain research areas, mainly connected to human resource management and leadership, organizational identity and work-related outcomes or international marketing. Strategic management and strategy-oriented IB scholars are less familiar with SIT, despite growing interest in MNE micro-foundations and decision-making under uncertainty. Originality/value: The authors position SIT as a natural meta-theoretical fit to MNE internalization theory. By providing a future research agenda along with eight supporting research questions, the authors help to advance the MNE internalization theory by linking individual, group and intergroup perspectives against a more socially nuanced, interactionist and dynamic view of MNEs and their decision-making.

PurposeThe purpose of this perspective paper is to answer the question of why some multinational corporations (MNCs) do not evolve and fail to avoid retrogression by natural selection in international business (IB) and to introduce eight papers selected for this special issue.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conceptually discuss the reasons for MNC failure by illustrating key motivations behind foreign direct investment (FDI) undertaken by MNCs based on internalization theory, the OLI paradigm and the OILL (i.e. OLI plus the learning motivation) paradigm. Then, the authors develop an evolutionary perspective to explore the survival of the fittest in the global markets and the natural selection of MNCs.FindingsThe eight papers selected for this special issue expand the authors’ understanding of globalized organizations' challenges, evolution and decline as well as offering a distinct opportunity to reconsider diverse extant theories about MNCs by suggesting an extension that accounts for the rise of various globalized organizations particularly in and from emerging markets.Originality/valueDespite increased numbers of MNCs, which struggle to survive and are faced with great risk of failure, the authors’ understanding of them still remains in infancy. While scholars have investigated diverse topics related to MNCs, existing studies have developed theories predominantly emphasizing MNC success. Thus, conventional theories in IB such as internalization theory and the OLI paradigm may not be sufficiently applicable to explain the phenomenon of MNC failure (i.e. MNC decline). Based on authors’ discussions, the authors believe this is an appropriate time to refine mainstream IB theories by concurrently considering both evolution and retrogression.

We infuse new internalization theory (NIT) with insights from family firm research, specifically, micro-foundational drivers of family managers’ decision-making such as socio-emotional wealth (SEW) preferences and bifurcation bias. We argue that the international governance of family firms is best explained through a model that combines efficiency-based logic (rooted in NIT) and affect-based logic (rooted in SEW). Such explanation expands the boundaries of NIT by addressing both international competitive success of family firms vis-à-vis their non-family counterparts and their divergence from efficient international governance and consequent failure in host markets. Disciplined pursuit of functional (as opposed to dysfunctional) aspects of SEW can facilitate the firm’s ability to economize on bounded rationality and reliability and create an environment conducive to value generation in host markets. However, unconstrained pursuit of SEW will lead to governance inefficiencies. Family firms can enhance the functional impact of SEW by implementing anticipative, large-scale strategies to economize on bifurcation bias. Ultimately, the main prediction of NIT holds—only efficient governance will be sustained in the long run.
