AbstractA new gravity survey (1164 gravity stations and 180 samples for density analysis) combined with two new geological cross sections has been carried out in a sector of the Central Pyrenees in order to improve the characterization of basement and cover architecture. From North to South, the study area comprises the southern half of the Axial Zone and the northernmost part of the South-Pyrenean Zone. New gravity data were combined with previous existing databases to obtain the Bouguer and residual anomaly maps of the study area. The two cross sections, oriented NNE–SSW, were built from field data and previous surficial and subsurface data and cross the La Maladeta plutonic complex. The residual anomaly map shows values ranging from −18 to 16 mGal and anomalies mainly oriented N120E. The two 2.5D modelled cross sections show similar observed gravity curves coinciding with similar interpreted structural architecture. Data show a gravity high oriented N120E coinciding with the Orri basement thrust sheet and an important gravity depression, with the same orientation, coinciding with the leading edge at depth of the Rialp basement thrust sheet and interpreted as linked to a large subsurface accumulation of Triassic evaporites. The volume at depth of the La Maladeta and Arties granites has been constrained through gravity modelling. This work highlights that the combination of structural geology and gravity modelling can help to determine the structural architecture of an orogen and localize accumulations of evaporites at depth.

AbstractGravity data retrieved from the Bureau Gravimétrique International and the Gravimetric Atlas of Switzerland have been used to evaluate their applicability as a subsurface investigation tool to assess key geological features in support of the geothermal exploration in the Geneva Basin (GB). In this context, the application of an effective processing workflow able to produce reliable residual gravity anomalies was implemented as a crucial first step to investigate whether and to what level gravity anomalies can be correlated to geologic sources of geothermal interest. This study focusses on the processing workflow applied to publicly available gravity data, including the quantification of the uncertainty. This was then also used for first-order 2D forward gravity modelling. The resulting residual anomalies demonstrate the potential use of gravity investigations for geothermal exploration in sedimentary basins, and also reveal areas of significant, irreparable misfit, which calls for the use of complementary data and 3D subsurface structural knowledge. The results of such investigations will be presented in subsequent studies.

<p>This study integrates gravity modelling and analysis with seismic constraints through the prism of seismic anisotropy to characterize the structures of southern Mongolia, in particular at the lower crustal but also the upper mantle levels. Recently, gravity signal analysis and forward modelling combined with magmatic geochemistry and thermodynamic modelling demonstrate that relamination of allochtonous felsic to intermediate lower crust played a major role in southern Mongolia structure. Relamination of material induces a homogeneous layer in the lower crust, which contrasts with the highly heterogeneous upper crustal part composed of different lithotectonic domains. The seismic signals of the seven southernmost stations of the MOBAL2003 experiment were analyzed to get the receiver functions. The data treatment was performed following a new protocol, which reduces the noise on the different components. This treatment reveals the variation of the crustal thickness of cca. 10 km along the first 450 km of the profile. In addition, some seismic stations display significant signals related to the occurrence of a low velocity zone (LVZ) at lower crustal and upper mantle levels. The depth of the Moho discontinuity and the dips of the seismic interfaces obtained from the seismic inversions as well as the boundaries of the different tectonic zones constitute the starting points from the 2D forward gravity modelling along the southern part of the MOBAL 2003 profile. Moreover, the density values applied to the different blocks were determined according to the global lithological composition of the different units and the vergences of the tectonic contacts were constrained by the geodynamic studies. The gravity modelling reveals the occurrence of a low density zone in the lower crust beneath the four southernmost seismic stations, which corresponds to the LVZ observed with the receiver function analysis. The combination of the independent methods enhances the occurrence of a low velocity and a low density zone (LVLDZ) at lower crustal level beneath the southernmost part of the MOBAL 2003 seismic profile. These LVLDZ may demonstrate the existence of the relamination of a hydrous material in southern Mongolia.</p>

Gravity modelling is a necessary process of applying gravity data to practice, and a vital research area in resource exploring and geodesy. Inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation is a widely used algorithm in gravity modelling and many other griding procedures. Based on the gravity anomaly data acquired from the airborne gravimetry over a region in the Northwest of China, IDW method is analysed and implemented with varying calculation radius in gravity modelling. The results show that over the study area, with a proper calculation radius, the IDW can give a more precise prediction than quadric surfaces fitting (QSF) method. The distances between sampled points and unsampled points are the only information taken into consideration in the IDW interpolation, so the analysis of the influence by changing the calculation radius of the unsampled points in this test provides a new research direction of error eliminating when using IDW.

Abstract The coastal marine gravity field is not well modelled due to poor data coverage. Recent satellite altimeters provide reliable altimetry observations near the coast, filling the gaps between the open ocean and land. We show the potential of recent satellite altimetry for the coastal marine gravity modelling using the least squares collocation technique. Gravity prediction error near the coast is better than 4 mGal. The modelled gravity anomalies are validated with sparse shipborne gravimetric measurements. We obtained 4.86 mGal precision when using the altimetry data with the best coastal coverage and retracked with narrow primary peak retracker. The predicted gravity field is an enhancement to EGM2008 over the coastal regions. The potential improvement in alti- metric marine gravity will be beneficial for the next generation of EGM development.

This paper investigates the determinants of fishery export from Vietnam using a structural gravity modelling. Taken additional trade-related variables from the World Bank’s open data into the estimation of the gravity model, this research will be the first trial to examine the impacts of these variables on export of fishery products and to propose policy implications for stimulating export in Vietnam. The empirical results show that each 1% reduction of export costs might increase approximately 3.7% of the export value of fishery products. This finding is critical because the current administrative system for export of agricultural commodity in Vietnam consists of many stages and includes a long period of animal quarantine inspection, document checking, and customs clearance that might cause additional export costs. Therefore, policies aiming at reducing the costs of border and documentary compliance for export will be significant to stimulate export in developing countries as Vietnam.
