The article presents phenomenological constitutive relations for modeling the compression curing of a highly filled polymer medium, obtained in the framework of the mechanics of an almost incompressible viscoelastic solid using the modified Herrmann variational principle. The relations are based on the representation of the medium as a composition of a fluid and solidified material, taking into account the history of continuous nucleation and deformation of a new phase in the temperature range of phase transformations. During the manufacturing process, different mechanisms lead to process-induced deformations and stresses. These mechanisms depend on thermal expansion, shrinkage, nonlinear viscoelastic properties of the material, and variation in local temperatures. In critical cases, these residual stresses can lead to initial degradation and up to failure of the material. A stable numerical algorithm for the problem’s solution has been developed on the base of finite element method. Numerical investigation of the stress and deformation in system during the polymerization process has been carried out. The evolution of curing stresses in a singular zone of domain has been investigated

Parallel-plate compression of multicellular spheroids (MCSs) is a promising and popular technique to quantify the viscoelastic properties of living tissues. This work presents two different approaches to the simulation of the MCS compression based on viscoelastic solid and viscoelastic fluid models. The first one is the standard linear solid model implemented in ABAQUS/CAE. The second one is the new model for 3D viscoelastic free surface fluid flow, which combines the Oldroyd-B incompressible fluid model and the incompressible neo-Hookean solid model via incorporation of an additional elastic tensor and a dynamic equation for it. The simulation results indicate that either approach can be applied to model the MCS compression with reasonable accuracy. Future application of the viscoelastic free surface fluid model is the MCSs fusion highly-demanded in bioprinting.

This paper presents a time-domain boundary element method (BEM) for viscoelastic wave scattering by many cavities in 3D infinite space. The convolution quadrature method (CQM) is applied to the convolutions of the time-domain boundary integral equation in order to improve the numerical stability of BEM. Scattering of an incident wave by cavities in a viscoelastic solid is solved by the developed time-domain BEM. The incident wave propagating in a viscoelastic solid in time-domain is obtained using the inverse Fourier transform of that in frequency-domain. In addition, the hybrid parallelization using OpenMP and MPI is used to save the computational time and memory.

Abstract In this paper, we show that a simple generalization of the holographic axion model can realize spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry by considering a special gauge-axion higher derivative term. The finite real part and imaginary part of the stress tensor imply that the dual boundary system is a viscoelastic solid. By calculating quasi-normal modes and making a comparison with predictions from the elasticity theory, we verify the existence of phonons and pseudo-phonons, where the latter is realized by introducing a weak explicit breaking of translational symmetry, in the transverse channel. Finally, we discuss how the phonon dynamics affects the charge transport.

This paper deals with the modified Ohm's law, including the temperature gradient and charge density effects, and the generalized Fourier's law, including the present current density impact, the problem of conveyance of thermal stresses and temperature in a generalized Magneto–Thermo-Viscoelastic Solid Cylinder of radius L. The formulation is applied to the generalized thermoelasticity dependent on the Green-Naghdi (G-N II) hypothesis. The Laplace change system is utilized to solve the problem. At last, the outcomes got are introduced graphically to show the impact of Magnetic Field and time and on the field variables.

Climbing plants must reach supports and navigate gaps to colonize trees. This requires a structural organization ensuring the rigidity of so-called ‘searcher’ stems. Cacti have succulent stems adapted for water storage in dry habitats. We investigate how a climbing cactus Selenicereus setaceus develops its stem structure and succulent tissues for climbing. We applied a ‘wide scale’ approach combining field-based bending, tensile and swellability tests with fine-scale rheological, compression and anatomical analyses in laboratory conditions. Gap-spanning ‘searcher’ stems rely significantly on the soft cortex and outer skin of the stem for rigidity in bending (60–94%). A woody core contributes significantly to axial and radial compressive strength (80%). Rheological tests indicated that storage moduli were consistently higher than loss moduli indicating that the mucilaginous cortical tissue behaved like a viscoelastic solid with properties similar to physical or chemical hydrogels. Rheological and compression properties of the soft tissue changed from young to old stages. The hydrogel–skin composite is a multi-functional structure contributing to rigidity in searcher stems but also imparting compliance and benign failure in environmental situations when stems must fail. Soft tissue composites changing in function via changes in development and turgescence have a great potential for exploring candidate materials for technical applications.
