Abstract BACKGROUND Financial toxicity (FT) refers to the negative financial impact of cancer. Research exploring FT in patients with CNS tumors is limited to more common diagnoses or within single institutions. Total income, work interference and symptom burden are all key parameters when investigating FT in patients with rare CNS tumors. METHODS A web-based study of 210 participants’ responses to financial, clinical, symptom burden (MDASI-BT/MDASI-SP), depression and anxiety (PROMIS-Depression/Anxiety), work interference (SF-36) and general health status (EQ-5D-3L) is reported using descriptive statistics and tests of associations. RESULTS Patients were white (93%) employed (48%) females (72%), with median age of 47 (19-75). The most common diagnosis was ependymoma (80%). Original tumor location was the brain in 83 (40%) and spine in 115 (55%). Median time from tissue diagnosis was 48 months (0 – 402). Income was lower than the poverty level in 6% and lower than the median U.S. in 23%. A change in work due to their tumor was reported by 60%, with the majority stopping work (31%). One-third reported lack of access to health-care services and 10% required home care services. Difficulty walking was reported by 42% and difficulty in performing activities due to physical health by over 60%. Anxiety and depression scores aligned with the average for the U.S. population; however, 21% were taking antidepressants and 42% reported not being able to complete work or activities due to depression. Half of all patients reported moderate-severe pain, fatigue, and weakness with higher symptom burden and depression associated with change in work status (p < 0.003). CONCLUSION Patients with rare CNS tumors report an impact of their tumor diagnosis on activities/work patterns, with an associated higher symptom burden. Future studies exploring financial impact in patients with rare CNS tumors and targeted programs to address these outcomes are needed.

The origin of life occurred by a series of prebiotic reaction pathways (collectively a system) hosted in one or more geochemical environments (together forming an origin of life scenario). State-of-the-art prebiotic chemistry links together reactions to create systems, intended to be more representative of the diverse chemical pathways that may have proceeded on early Earth. By practical necessity, prebiotic systems chemistry must be investigated under simplified conditions in comparison to likely natural environments. The mismatch in complexity between lab and environment poses a challenge: how to build systems chemistry that is robust not only in the idealised conditions of a lab, but also under natural levels of environmental stress? Here, we propose and formalise a conceptual framework for such work: interference chemistry. We define interference chemistry as the interaction between prebiotic systems chemistry and the environmental scenarios proposed to host it. Natural environments in which prebiotic chemistry could have occurred are messy, containing many spectator ions, mineral phases, and spatially and temporally variable physical processes, e.g., wet/dry cycles. Each of these environmental variables may interfere either constructively or destructively with prebiotic pathways, respectively aiding or inhibiting their efficacy. Exploring interference chemistry for a reaction system will point towards favoured or disfavoured regions of environmental parameter space. To do so, innovation is needed in both the investigation of early planetary environmental conditions, and the continued incorporation of these constraints into experimental systems chemistry. We argue that interference chemistry provides a compelling way to assess combinations of system and environment, leading the way to increasingly prebiotically plausible scenarios for the origin of life on Earth.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between work-family interference (WIF), organizational and occupational turnover intentions. Further, it was investigated if the relationships are mediated by ‘psychological contract breach’ (PCB) concerning ‘work-family balance obligations’. A study was completed by gathering data using a self-administered survey from employees working in the Pakistani Banking industry (n=359). The results indicate that WIF is positively linked to organizational and occupational turnover intentions. Results of mediation analyses showed a significant indirect effect of WIF, via PCB, on occupational turnover intentions but not on organizational turnover intentions. This study provides insight into the mechanisms through which WIF affects employee turnover intentions. Moreover, this study adds to psychological contract theory by revealing insight into the particular sub of work-family content of work-family balance obligations.

This article adds to entrepreneurship research by detailing the mediating role of work-related emotional exhaustion in the connection between the extent to which women entrepreneurs experience work interference with family—defined as the degree to which the quality of their personal lives is compromised by work demands—and the performance of their businesses. It also predicts a buffering role of the entrepreneurial strategic posture of their businesses in this process. Survey data collected among women entrepreneurs in Chile indicate that the depletion of entrepreneurs’ work-related energy resource reservoirs is an important reason that increasing levels of work interference with family diminish business performance. This mediating role of emotional exhaustion is less prominent when they run their businesses entrepreneurially, which might help them find innovative solutions for the negative spillovers of work stress into the family domain. This research therefore reveals a critical challenge for women entrepreneurs who suffer in their personal lives due to pressing work demands: the associated emotional drainage compromises the success of their business endeavors, which eventually can generate even more hardships. This study also shows how women entrepreneurs can address this challenge, that is, by drawing from the novel insights that arise from an entrepreneurial strategic posture.

In physiotherapy practice, a number of patients are known to suffer from chronic pain which results in reduced activity levels, interference in sleep, enjoyment of life, mood, and relations with others. Cognitive behavioral therapy, in this aspect will provide a holistic approach to the available treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy has also been shown to target cognitive distortions such as pain catastrophizing, fear avoidance, overgeneralizing and others, all the while improving physical health, activity levels and quality of life. This study assessed the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy in the management of patients with chronic pain at the University Teaching Hospitals in Zambia. A randomized clinical trial utilizing a crossover design was utilized for the study. A random sample of 32 participants was used in the study after fulfilling the study criteria. Data was analyzed using ANCOVA with alpha of 0.05. The study recorded small effects in the reduction of pain intensity in both phase one and two. In phase one, it also recorded small effects in general work interference, sleep interference and enjoyment of life interference but recorded medium effects in normal work interference and mood interference. Phase two of the study recorded small effect size in reduction of general work interference, normal work interference, mood interference, relations with others interference, sleep interference and Enjoyment of Life interference. Cognitive behavioral therapy ensures the management of chronic pain addresses areas in which an individual is affected by pain and which in turn exacerbate the chronic pain. Physiotherapy provides a more holistic approach when used in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy.

The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has essentially led to the closure of many businesses worldwide. With the increasing number of viruses in every part of the world, there is a need for flexible work arrangements to maintain the operations. Somehow, managing workloads using these arrangements have also affected work-family conflict during a pandemic situation. Plus, there is a dearth in the literature of flexible work arrangements in the context of work-family conflict. Thus, the purposes of this review are to investigate how these factors are related to work interference with family (WIF), and family-interference with work (FIW), and its outcomes, such as work-life balance, well-being, mental health, turnover intentions, satisfaction, and others. The reviewed articles were obtained from three main databases; Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct from the year 2000 until 2020. Keywords including "flexibility work arrangement," "flexible," "work arrangement," “schedule flexibility,” “work hours,” “schedule,” "work-family conflict,” “family-work conflict,” “work interference with family” and “family interference with work” were managed to identify 31 articles. Also, this systematic review was conducted to collect the findings on the relationship of the above domains, which can be used by businesses to adapt to the new normal. Several recommendations were proposed to conduct further study, especially in research design, method, and measurements.
