This study had the purpose of analyzing dominant and non-dominant limb performances (frequency of use and accuracy) during match-play technical actions with ball possession (receiving, passing, and shooting a ball) in professional futsal and also check for the possible influence of playing position and the quality of opponent. We have analyzed data pertaining to eight matches of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012™ in which 76 male professional senior futsal players participated (44 right-footed and 32 left-footed). In total, we coded 5,856 actions (2,550 ball receptions, 3,076 passes, and 230 shoots). Our main findings were that (a) players used the dominant limb more frequently than the non-dominant limb for all actions considered [p < 0.001; effect size (ES) medium-to-large]; (b) accuracy was generally greater when using the dominant limb, regardless of the quality of opponent (p < 0.01; ES large); and (c) in shooting actions, pivots showed similar accuracy between dominant and non-dominant limbs (p = 0.51; ES small). The study suggested that when completing technical actions with the ball in futsal, high-level players depended to a greater extent on the use of their dominant lower limb during official matches. Excepting a similarity detected between limbs on shooting performance of pivots, players from all positional roles generally showed a higher accuracy rate in receiving, passing, and shooting a ball when using their dominant limb as compared to their non-dominant one during match-play and the limb usage and accuracy seemed to be independent of the quality of opponents.

We used observational methodology to analyze lateral conditioning in the technical-tactical performance of high level 8–9-year-old karatekas, specifically in relation to the guard action that supports the technical action and the body segment with which it is performed. We designed an ad hoc observation instrument to analyze lateral preference in the technical-tactical actions that take place during the kumite. We relied on LINCE software for data registration, and we found good inter-observer reliability, calculated with Cohen's Kappa coefficient. Generalizability Theory supported the homogeneity of the behavior deployed by these combatants. Our results represent a starting point in the longitudinal programming of karate. By relating our results and those of other studies that have addressed lateral performance in formative karate in the kumite modality, we are able to draw a roadmap of a karateka's path towards the equilaterality that is inherent in an elite competitor: (a) the 8-9 year old karateka must overcome a conditioned lateral prevalence by adopting a forward non-dominant leg guard so as to then attack with the dominant body segment; (b) the eqilateral use of the right or left fist must occur later, between the 12–13 year age group and the senior category; and (c) there will then be less decisive lateral conditioning in the execution of offensive leg techniques.

"Nowadays in Russia, there are insufficient systematized data on the degree of preparedness of medical students and graduates to interact with children with atypical development (AD). We have developed a methodological approach to assess the interaction of medical students with AD children. The work uses a perceptual experiment during which students are presented with test sequences containing speech signals of children with typical development (TD) and AD (Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders). During the perceptual experiment, the listeners’ behavior was being video-recorded in parallel to verify their answers using the FaceReader software determining the true emotional state by their facial expression. The students’ psycho-emotional status was evaluated using a battery of psychological tests before and after the perceptual experiment. Additionally, the subjects’ psychophysiological and physiological parameters were determined. At the first stage of the work, the speech of 16 TD and AD children (11 boys and 5 girls) was used, the listeners were 25 1st-year pediatric students and 5 experts in the field of child speech. The statistical analysis revealed correlations between the listeners’ psychophysiological characteristics (Russian-native speakers): the profile of functional lateral asymmetry, formation indicators of the phonemic hearing, the coefficient of lateral preference by speech and the success in recognizing the children’s gender, age, psychoneurological state (TD – developmental disorders), and the severity of disorders in AD children. The acoustic parameters of words classified by experts as “legible” and “illegible” were determined. The work is financially supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project 19–78–00057)."

Abstract Objective Approximately 9 out of 10 individuals show right-hand dominance. The remaining 10% include left-hand dominant and mixed handed/ambidextrous individuals. Laterality, lateral postures or lateral preference is defined by various authors as the most comfortable posture that an individual prefers to assume. The current study aims at finding the distribution of these lateral postures and their correlation with handedness/dominant side. Materials and Methods The study was done in medical and nursing students in the age group 18 to 22 years. The patients were asked to fill a self-assessment questionnaire to determine handedness and footedness. The laterality traits were observed by asking the patients to do by themselves after an untailored demonstration. Statistical Analysis The relationship between study parameters was assessed using Chi-square test. Pearson’s correlation test was done to assess the strength of association between comfort ratings of the various laterality postures. Results In our study, 96.5% were right handed and 79.9% of patients were right footed. Also, 50.8% preferred right-hand clasping, 53.9% preferred left-arm folding, and 60.6% preferred right-leg folding. A statistically significant correlation was seen between foot preference and lateral postures and arm folding and hand clasping (p < 0.05). A significant association was also found between handedness and positive history of retraining. Sidedness did not follow any Mendelian pattern of inheritance. Conclusions Handedness is affected by genetic and environmental factors. Since cultural and traditional practices can affect the lateral postures and handedness, it is important to know the relationship between laterality postures and sidedness and the impact of retraining on them. These postures are measures of cerebral dominance and are clinically important.

Mothers usually cradle their infants to the left of their body midline, an asymmetry that seems to be a typically female lateral preference. This bias is deemed to be an evolutionary facilitator of communication between cradling and cradled individuals and is believed to be strongly related to hemispheric specialization for complex socio-affective behaviors. Thus, left cradling might facilitate affective interactions in females with typical brain organization, probably due to a right-hemisphere dominance for social attachment. In this study, we investigated cradling-side preferences in 288 young females as a function of their attachment styles to parents and partners. A left-cradling bias was more frequent in participants experiencing positive relationships with their mother and romantic partners. These findings indicate that the left-cradling bias may be associated with high-quality social attachment behaviors in females and, therefore, can be considered as a natural index of socio-emotional attunement between the cradling and cradled individuals.

Over the last century, sporadic research has suggested that people whose hand, eye, foot, or ear dominances are not consistently right- or left-sided are at special risk of suffering academic difficulties. This phenomenon is known as crossed laterality. Although the bulk of this research dates from 1960’s and 1970’s, crossed laterality is becoming increasingly popular in the area of school education, driving the creation of several interventions aimed at restoring or consolidating lateral dominance. However, the available evidence is fragmentary. To determine the impact of crossed laterality on academic achievement and intelligence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of articles published since 1900. The inclusion criteria for the review required that studies used one or more lateral preference tasks for at least two specific parts of the body; they included a valid measure of crossed laterality; they measured the impact of crossed laterality on academic achievement or intelligence; and they included participants between 3 and 17 years old. The final sample included 26 articles that covered a total population of 3578 children aged 5 to 12. Taken collectively, the results of these studies do not support the claim that there is a reliable association between crossed laterality and either academic achievement or intelligence. Along with this, we detected important shortcomings in the literature, such as considerable heterogeneity among the variables used to measure laterality and among the tasks utilized to measure the outcomes. The educational implications of these results are discussed.
