Although the adoption rate of dogs and cats from animal shelters has increased, a proportion of animals are returned to the shelter after they are adopted. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors informing the return of 102 dogs to an animal shelter over a four-month period, and the return of 72 cats to an animal shelter over a three-month period. Descriptive statistics revealed dogs are most commonly returned for behavior issues related to aggression (38.2%), and cats are most commonly returned due to the adopter’s personal reasons (56.9%). The results also indicated that more than half of the dogs (51.0%) and cats (57.0%) returned in this study were owned for more than 60 days. Further research is needed to compare the effectiveness of different pet retention programs in addressing the factors that inform returned adoptions.

A Review of: Teper, J. H. (2019). Considering “sameness” of monographic holdings in shared print retention decisions. Library Resources & Technical Services, 63(1), 29-45. https://doi.org/10.5860/lrts.63n1.29 Abstract Objective – To investigate the degree to which books catalogued using the same bibliographic record differ and to consider the implications of these differences for cooperative monographic print retention programs. Design – Book condition survey. Setting – Academic library consortium in the United States of America. Subjects – 47 monographic titles, publication years 1851-1922, held by all consortium members and catalogued using the same respective OCLC record number. 625 out of a possible 705 circulating copies of these titles were available for item-level analysis via interlibrary loan. Methods – Book condition surveys were completed for all items and the resulting sets of assessment data points were analyzed to reveal trends. Main Results – 3.4% of items analyzed exhibited cataloguing errors (i.e., were catalogued using the wrong OCLC records), 56.8% retained their original bindings, 17.8% were marked to show previous ownership, 95.7% were complete with no missing content, 9.8% had no damage, and 18.9% had received identifiable preservation action. Conclusion – Books catalogued using the same OCLC record demonstrated many differences when compared at the item level. These differences are important in light of shared print retention programs and highlight a need for inquiry into the number of copies that should be retained to minimize the loss of uniqueness in print materials.

Introduction. Nurse turnover will harm the hospital both in terms of costs, resources, and motivation. Turnover can be predicted by exploring the turnover intention of the nurses. Nurses' turnover intention is closely related to the practice of nurse resource management in implementing policies including compensation, career development and work design. The study aims to analyze and identify the effect of retention programs (compensation, career path, work design) on nurses' turnover intention. Methods. The mixed method parallel convergent approach is used in the study. Simple random sampling was taken on 200 respondent nurses in three private hospitals. Semi structure interviews were conducted on 15 participants. Results. Regression test results show that there is a significant effect between compensation retention programs (R = 0.477; p = 0.000; β = 0.23), career development (R = 0.493; p = 0.000; β = 0.22), work design (R = 0.422; p = 0.000, β = 0.16) on nurses' turnover intention. The most dominant factor is compensation (β = 0.265, p = 0.000) compared to career development and work design. The results of qualitative research showed that the key participants stated that compensation was felt not adequate with the nurse profession, the implementation of career development programs had not increased motivation and the workload was felt too much as a result of too many non-nursing tasks. Conclusion. Implications for nursing and hospital management, it is important for nurse managers to have the ability to plan and evaluate policies related to compensation, career development, and work design to improve nurse retention.
