Nurse turnover has become a continuous and increasing challenging problem in the healthcare system worldwide; and this became a priority that needs to be adequately managed. As a matter of fact, nurses are care givers and represent the frontline services that hospitals deliver to their patients, so it is an indispensable necessity to retain this workforce through both job satisfaction and job motivation. Providing the nurse workforce an appropriate treatment will surely lead to retention of talent that is critical to the continuity of the healthcare organizations. This research aims to assess the impact of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices mainly in relation to job satisfaction on nurses’ turnover intention, especially that Lebanon is one of the countries where the healthcare system is suffering from nurses’ shortage. This study uses a descriptive correlational study based on a structured questionnaire administered to 100 nurses within North Lebanon Hospitals. The collected data statistical analysis is carried out via the Statistical Product and Service Solutions SPSS-version 25. Results revealed that the absence of efficient HR practices forces nurses toward turnover decision. Thus, the creation of supported and motivated environment will positively affect the nurses’ decision to stay, and thus minimize the turnover rate.

AbstractStudies have shown that a ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) bundle significantly decreases VAP rates. In this study, we evaluated existing knowledge, practices, and adherence of nurses and infection control preventionists (ICP) to the VAP bundles of care in the intensive care unit (ICU) by using qualitative and quantitative tools. Of 60 participants (56 nurses and 4 ICPs), mean knowledge score regarding specific evidence-based VAP guidelines was 5 (range 3–8) out of 10 points. Self-reported adherence to the VAP bundle ranged from 38.5 to 100%, with perfect compliance to head of bed elevation, and poorest compliance with readiness to extubate. Overall VAP median bundle compliance was 84.6%. Knowledge regarding specific components of VAP prevention is lacking. Formal training and interactive educational sessions should be performed regularly to assess the competency of key personnel regarding the VAP bundle, especially in the context of rapid nurse turnover. Incentives for retention of nurses should also be considered, so that knowledge of hospital specific initiatives such as the VAP bundles of care can be cultivated over time.

Background Bedside nurse turnover in the United States is 15.9%, representing a national challenge that has been attributed to poor work environments. Healthy work environments are associated with improved nurse satisfaction and retention as well as positive patient outcomes; unhealthy work environments have the opposite effects. Objectives To implement the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) healthy work environment (HWE) framework in an intensive care unit and to evaluate staff satisfaction, turnover, and tenure 2 years later. Methods A pre-post study design was used to evaluate implementation of the HWE framework in an intensive care unit in a large academic medical facility. Interventions for each of the 6 HWE standards were performed. The AACN HWE assessment survey was used to measure skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership in 2017 and in 2019. Results Nurse cohorts (n = 165 in 2017; n = 176 in 2019) had a mean age of 31 (median, 27; range, 23-63) years, were predominantly female (76%), and had a mean of 5 (median, 3) years of intensive care unit nursing experience. Statistically significant improvements were found in all standards except the skilled communication and overall measures. Registered nurse turnover remained stable and tenure increased by 79 days in this 2-year period. Conclusions Findings from this study suggest that interventions addressing the HWE standards are associated with improved staff satisfaction, turnover, and average tenure, further demonstrating the value of the HWE framework in improving retention.

The study examined predictors of male nurse turnover intention in Korea using data collected from Korean hospitals. The results were obtained based on a secondary analysis of data previously collected from 306 male nurses in 16 regions of Korea from December 2014 to February 2015. Our findings suggest that male nurse turnover intention is predicted by (1) individual factors: single (B = 0.93, p = 0.008); (2) organizational factors: organizational commitment (B = −0.36, p < 0.001), job satisfaction (B = −0.27, p = 0.001), and job stress (B = 0.24, p < 0.001); and (3) social factors: hospital location in medium-categorized cities (B = 0.70, p = 0.012) and kinship responsibility (B = 0.13, p = 0.026). These factors accounted for 56.9% of the total variance. To lower the rate of turnover intention among male nurses, strategic interventions should be implemented based on the factors identified in this study.

An aging veteran population with a median age of 65, their inferior health status, and the rapidly growing number of women veterans propel veterans affairs (VA) hospitals to provide a wide range of nursing services. However, despite the significant roles of nurses and chronic nurse shortages in VA hospitals, there has been little research on the determinants of nurse turnover in the VA healthcare system. This study analyzed registered nurse turnover rates at a panel of 118 VA hospitals from 2015 through 2017 and found that nurse turnover is significantly influenced by patient mortality, job satisfaction, annual salary level, and preventable hospitalizations. These findings suggest that VA hospitals should maintain proper nurse workloads and implement programs that can improve nurses’ stress level and job satisfaction.

Background: Globally, nursing turnover has become a contemporary concern that significantly influences the financial proficiency of healthcare systems. Not only costs, but healthcare accessibility and quality also reverberate the consequence of the phenomenon.Design and methods:  The study explores the factors that attribute to turnover among foreign registered nurses working in Saudi Arabia. A quantitative-based cross-sectional descriptive study design that uses survey data to make statistical inferences about foreign nurse turnover in Saudi Arabia, was conducted to ascertain factors influencing the termination of foreign nurses working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals.Results: Factors influencing turnover were categorized into 9 dimensions, professional growth and development, leadership style, management, wage and benefits, workload, interpersonal relationship, housing facilities and services, hospital facilities and intent to stay and turn-over intention, of which the professional growth (4.1±0.7) and development had the highest mean agreement scores (4.0±1.1), whereas housing (2.3±1.3) and hospital facilities (2.1±1.0) showed the lowest mean scores. Conclusions: Wage benefits and workload factors were found to be the most significant causes of expatriate nursing turnover, closely followed by inadequate housing and hospital facilities. Recommendations from nursing staff on how to improve retention were also noted.

There is an acute shortage of nurses worldwide, including in Jordan. The nursing shortage is considered to be a crucial and complex challenge across healthcare systems and has stretched to a warning threshold. High turnover among nurses in Jordan is an enduring problem and is believed to be the foremost cause of the nurse shortage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the multidimensional impact of the person-environment (P-E) fit on the job satisfaction (JS) and turnover intention (TI) of registered nurses. The moderating effect of psychological empowerment (PE) on the relationship between JS and TI was also investigated. Based on a quantitative research design, data were collected purposively from 383 registered nurses working at private Jordanian hospitals through self-administered structured questionnaires. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 25 and Smart Partial Least Squares (PLS) 3.2.8 were used to analyze the statistical data. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between person-job fit (P-J fit), person-supervisor fit (P-S fit), and JS. However, this study found an insignificant relationship between person-organization fit (P-O fit) and JS. Moreover, PE was also significantly moderate between JS and TI of nurses. This study offers an important policy intervention that helps healthcare organizations to understand the enduring issue of nurse turnover. Additionally, policy recommendations to mitigate nurse turnover in Jordan are outlined.

The high turnover of employees in the hospital can have negative impact on the disruption of the process of health services provided to patients and in the end can lead to employee job satisfaction and the desire for employees to stay in an organization. This study aims to analyse the effect of job satisfaction including the dimensions of the job itself, salary, promotion opportunities, supervision by leaders, colleagues, and work environment on the intention of nurse turnover at Faisal Islamic Hospital Makassar. This is a quantitative study using an analytic observational study with a cross sectional study design. The sample using total sampling were nurses who placed 127 respondents. Data analysis used chi-square test. The results showed the relationship between job satisfaction based on the dimensions of the job itself, salary, promotion opportunities, supervision by leaders, colleagues, and the work environment on intention to leave. Therefore, the management is asked to motivate employees by providing bonuses, leave, official vehicles or other facilities that can be used as a reward tool for employees who have worked well and pay attention to employee satisfaction by seeing what employees expect.
