Aims: At the Ohio State University College of Medicine, medical students have the option to train in ultrasound and take part in global electives where they can utilize clinical ultrasound. This presents the opportunity for medical students to engage in bidirectional sharing of medical and ultrasound knowledge in geographic regions with limited resources. We developedBringing Ultrasound Internationally for Long-term development (BUILD), a longitudinal course, to provide standardized ultrasound education to students planning to enroll in global health electives.Material and methods: This was a pilot study of the BUILD curriculum. Third-year medical students planning to complete a global health elective were invited to participate. Enrolled students completed an online curriculum, hands-on scanning, and pathology sessions, which augmented the predeparture Global Health course work. Students received two resource assessments: one to be completed by the student, and one to be completed by the on-site preceptor. Main outcomes measured were number of enrolled students, primary indications for imaging, and number of scans per-day.Results: In total, 152 students participated in the study and traveled to 22 different global sites in Low-Income Countries (LIC’s). All enrolled students completed the curriculum. Between 3 and 25 scans were performed per day and the leading indication for ultrasound imaging was obstetric and abdominal pain evaluation.Conclusions: The BUILD curriculum is a feasible construct to prepare students for using ultrasound during global electives. Students successfully performed proctored scans in a variety of settings. This format can be adopted by other institutions to further support student and global ultrasound programs.

Background: Despite ultrasound being an inherent part of medical education, only a few German medical schools have established a comprehensive ultrasound curriculum. This study aimed to explore medical students' perspectives on ultrasound in medical education (USMed).Results: Between January 1st, 2019 und June 30th, 2019, an online survey was conducted among German medical students via the students' associations and their respective teaching facilities. The survey consisted of 17 items regarding USMed. Statements were rated on a 4-point Likert scale for agreement. In total, 1040 students from 31 German medical faculties participated. The majority (1021, 98.2%) reported a very high to high interest in curricular USMed. Students agreed (n = 945, 90.9%) that USMed would be helpful along their entire course of medical studies. Considering the best starting time for USMed, the opinions of German medical students diverged: students studying in a model curriculum preferred to start in the second year (40.7%) while 49% of the students studying in a traditional curriculum preferred to start in the third year (p ≤ 0.001). An insufficient allotment of time for USMed in the planned curriculum (675, 65%) and a lack of courses run by medical faculty (305, 29.4%) were listed as perceived significant barriers to the participation in USMed. Peer teaching was regarded as an effective method in realizing USMed by 731 (70.3%) students.Conclusion: German medical students are very interested and willing to participate in USMed. There appears to be a high demand for US courses offered by medical schools.

Abstract Background In recent years, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential field of medical education. Bedside ultrasound has become a necessary skill for clinical physicians. Previous studies have already discussed the importance of advancements in ultrasound education. However, learning motivations for ultrasound education have seldom been analyzed in the literature. For medical students, learning ultrasound could have a relevance for their future career. The Existence, Relatedness and Growth (ERG) theory extended Maslow’s hierarchy of needs through these three concepts. This theory has been widely used in the workplace to analyze employee job performance but has not yet been applied in medical education. In this study ERG theory was applied to analyze pre-clinical medical students’ learning motivation toward ultrasound education. Method This mixed method study used online questionnaires consisting of open-ended questions as a data collection tool, and based on these results, both qualitative and quantitative analysis were conducted. Participants answered a series of neutral and open-ended questions regarding their motivations to learn ultrasonography. After data collection, a three-step analysis was conducted based on the grounded theory approach. Finally, the results of the thematic coding were used to complete additional quantitative analysis. Results The study involved 140 pre-clinical medical students, and their responses fell into 13 specific categories. The analysis demonstrated that students’ motivations toward ultrasound education were unbalanced across the three ERG domains (F = 41.257, p < .001). Pairwise comparisons showed that students mentioned existence motivation (MD = 39.3%; p < .001) and growth motivation (MD = 40.7%; p < .001) more frequently than relatedness motivation. However, there was no significant difference between existence motivation and growth motivation (MD = − 1.4%; p = .830). Conclusion The results revealed that students placed a high value on existence and growth needs rather than relatedness based on the survey. In addition, the findings suggest that ERG theory can be a useful tool to conduct medical education motivation analysis.
