All organisms face resource limitations that will ultimately restrict population growth, but the controlling mechanisms vary across ecosystems, taxa, and reproductive strategies. Using four decades of data, we examine how variation in the environment and population density affect reproductive outcomes in a capital-breeding carnivore, the northern elephant seal ( Mirounga angustirostris ). This species provides a unique opportunity to examine the relative importance of resource acquisition and density-dependence on breeding success. Capital breeders accrue resources over large temporal and spatial scales for use during an abbreviated reproductive period. This strategy may have evolved, in part, to confer resilience to short-term environmental variability. We observed density-dependent effects on weaning mass, and maternal age (experience) was more important than oceanographic conditions or maternal mass in determining offspring weaning mass. Together these findings show that the mechanisms controlling reproductive output are conserved across terrestrial and marine systems and vary with population dynamics, an important consideration when assessing the effect of extrinsic changes, such as climate change, on a population.

AbstractThe auditory biology of Monachinae seals is poorly understood. Limited audiometric data and certain anatomical features suggest that these seals may have reduced sensitivity to airborne sounds compared to related species. Here, we describe the in-air hearing abilities of a Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) trained to participate in a psychophysical paradigm. We report absolute (unmasked) thresholds for narrowband signals measured in quiet conditions across the range of hearing and masked thresholds measured in the presence of octave-band noise at two frequencies. The behavioral audiogram indicates a functional hearing range from 0.1 to 33 kHz and poor sensitivity, with detection thresholds above 40 dB re 20 µPa. Critical ratio measurements are elevated compared to those of other seals. The apparently reduced terrestrial hearing ability of this individual—considered with available auditory data for a northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris)—suggests that hearing in Monachinae seals differs from that of the highly sensitive Phocinae seals. Exploration of phylogenetic relationships and anatomical traits support this claim. This work advances understanding of the evolution of hearing in amphibious marine mammals and provides updated information that can be used for management and conservation of endangered Hawaiian monk seals.

Dispersal plays a key role fostering recovery of endangered species because reoccupying a former range can only happen via dispersal. The northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) is a large, marine predator that was nearly exterminated in the 19th century by over-hunting. Once they were afforded protection from harvest, the species spread from a single remnant colony to reoccupy its former range. As colonies in central California were reestablished during the 1960s-1990s, tagged seals documented northward dispersal from southern California. The central California colonies are now large and well-established, and tagging programs at the four northernmost colonies allowed us to quantify the extent and direction of dispersal. Natal dispersal by females was highest from the southernmost colony at Piedras Blancas, where 61% of surviving females emigrated to breed. Dispersal from the other three colonies was much lower, 5.6% from SE Farallon Island, 10.3% from Ano Nuevo, and 16.6% from Point Reyes. Adult dispersal of females, after breeding, was rare, with an annual rate < 2%. Juvenile dispersal is thus frequent in elephant seals, highest northward but also occurring southward, suggesting that continued expansion to new colonies throughout the west coast is probable.

Two independent strains of a Leptotrichia species (ES3154-GLUT and ES2714_GLU) were isolated from the oral cavity of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) that were admitted to The Marine Mammal Centre facilities in California, USA. The strains were isolated from oral swabs by cultivation in PPLO broth supplemented with serum, penicillin and colistin in anaerobic conditions. The strains were Gram-negative, pleomorphic, indole-, oxidase- and catalase-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile rods/coccobacilli in short chains. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of these strains shared 94.42 % nucleotide similarity with Oceanivirga salmonicida AVG 2115T but demonstrated ≤86.00–92.50 % nucleotide similarity to the 16S rRNA genes of other species of the family Leptotrichiaceae . The genome was sequenced for strain ES3154-GLUT. Average nucleotide identity values between strain ES3154-GLUT and 15 type strain genomes from the family Leptotrichiaceae ranged from 66.74 % vs. Sebaldella termitidis to 73.35 % vs. O. salmonicida . The whole genome phylogeny revealed that the novel species was most closely related to O. salmonicida AVG 2115T. This relationship was also confirmed by nucleotide similarity and multilocus phylogenetic analyses employing various housekeeping genes (partial 23S rRNA, rpoB, rpoC, rpoD, polC, adh, gyrA and gyrB genes). Chemotaxonomic and phenotypical features of strain ES3154-GLUT were in congruence with closely related members of the family Leptotrichiaceae , represented by similar enzyme profiles and fatty acid patterns. MALDI-TOF MS analysis was capable to clearly discriminate strain ES3154-GLUT from all currently described taxa of the family Leptotrichiaceae . Based on these data, we propose a novel species of the genus Oceanivirga , for which the name Oceanivirga miroungae sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain ES3154-GLUT (=DSM 109740T=CCUG 73653T=ATCC TSD-189T=NCTC 14411T) and one representative strain ES2714_GLU. The G+C content is 26.82 %, genome size is 1 356 983 bp.

In February 2015, we conducted a field study of causes of mortality of northern elephant seal ( Mirounga angustirostris) pups on San Miguel Island, California. Autopsies were performed on 18 freshly dead pups. Ages of pups ranged from stillborn to 6–8 wk. Gross and histologic lesions included trauma (9 of 18 pups), multifocal necrotizing myopathy (8 of 18), starvation with emaciation (7 of 18), congenital anomalies (3 of 18), bacterial infections (3 of 18), and perinatal mortality (stillbirths and neonates; 2 of 18). Trauma and emaciation or starvation were the most significant contributors to death. Bacterial infections included hemolytic Escherichia coli isolated from the lungs of 2 pups with pneumonia. Additionally, non-hemolytic Streptococcus sp. and hemolytic E. coli were isolated from the liver of an emaciated pup that had mild multifocal suppurative hepatitis. Other lesions, including a previously described necrotizing myopathy, congenital anomalies, and bacterial infections, were detected concurrently in cases with starvation and/or emaciation or trauma.

Lifetime reproductive success of individuals in a natural population provides an estimate of Darwinian fitness. We calculated lifetime reproductive success in a colony of female northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris (Gill, 1866)) by monitoring annual breeding throughout life of 7735 female weanlings marked individually at Año Nuevo, California, USA, from 1963 to 2005. Great variation in lifetime reproductive success was evident in three aspects of life history: (1) 75% of the females died before reaching breeding age and produced no pups; (2) nearly half of the survivors bred for only a few years before dying, and young females had low weaning success; (3) less than 1% of the females in the sample were exceptionally successful producing up to 20 pups in life. Many females that bred early, while still growing, had decreased lifespan, low weaning success, and lower lifetime reproductive success than females that postponed first breeding. Exceptional reproductive success was associated with giving birth annually, living long (up to age 23), and weaning large pups that were more likely to survive and breed. We conclude that there is strong selection for increased lifespan and multiparous supermoms that contribute significantly to pup production in the next generation.
