This paper studies the imaging of a ground moving target with airborne circular stripmap synthetic aperture radar (CSSAR). First, the range equation of a target moving with accelerations is developed. Then, a new range model of high accuracy is proposed, since the commonly used second-order Taylor-approximated range model is inaccurate when the azimuth resolution is relatively high or the target moves with accelerations. The proposed range model also makes it easy to derive an accurate analytical expression for the target’s 2-D spectrum. Third, based on the proposed range model, the target’s 2-D spectrum is derived and an efficient imaging method is proposed. The proposed imaging method implements focusing via a phase multiplication in the 2-D frequency domain and utilizes the genetic algorithm to accomplish an efficient search of the parameters of the proposed range model. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to validate the proposed range model and the proposed imaging method.

Ground moving target (GMT) is displaced and defocused in conventional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image due to the residual phase error of non-cooperative GMT motion. In this study, a GMT imaging (GMTIm) method is proposed for highly squint SAR. As the squint angle become large, the displace and defocus effect of the GMT image become severe and the geometry distortion of the GMT image cannot be ignored. The proposed method first deduced the two-dimensional (2-D) frequency domain signal of the GMT and the bulk compression function of the Range Migration Algorithm (RMA) in highly squint SAR. Then GMT ROI data are extracted and a modified minimum entropy algorithm (MMEA) is proposed to refocus the GMT image. MMEA introduces the idea of bisection into the iteration process to converge more efficiently than the previous minimum entropy method. To overcome the geometry distortion of the GMT image, an equivalent squint angle spectrum rotation method is proposed. Finally, to suppress the GMT image sidelobe, the sparse characteristic of GMT is considered and a sparse enhancement method is adopted. The proposed method can realize GMTIm in highly squint SAR where the squint angle reaches to 75 degrees. The PSNR and ISLR of point target in highly squint SAR is close to that in side-looking SAR. The simulated point target data and ship data are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper investigates a robust clutter suppression and detection of ground moving target (GMT) imaging method for a multichannel synthetic aperture radar (MC-SAR) with high-squint angle mounted on hypersonic vehicle (HSV). A modified coarse-focused method with cubic chirp Fourier transform (CFT) is explored first that permits the coarsely focused imageries to be recovered, thus alleviated the impacts of GMT Doppler ambiguity and range cell migration (RCM). After that, in combination with joint-pixel model, a robust clutter suppression method which enhances the GMT integration, and improving the accuracy of radial speed (RS) recovery by modifying the matching between the beamformer center and GMT, is proposed. Due to that the first-order phase compensation and RS retrieval are predigested, the proposed algorithm has lower the algorithmic complexity. Finally, the feasibility of our proposed method are verified via experimental results based on simulated and real measured data.

Ground moving target imaging finds its main applications in both military and homeland security applications, with examples in operations of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as border surveillance. When such an operation is performed from the air looking down towards the ground, the clutter return may be comparable or even stronger than the target’s, making the latter hard to be detected and imaged. In order to solve this problem, multichannel radar systems are used that are able to remove the ground clutter and effectively detect and image moving targets. In this feature paper, the latest findings in the area of Ground Moving Target Imaging are revisited that see the joint application of Space-Time Adaptive Processing and Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging. The theoretical aspects analysed in this paper are supported by practical evidence and followed by application-oriented discussions.
