Studies of the end of the 20th century showed that there are no sediments of the glacial-dammed lakesea, as well as sediments of periglacial alluvium in sections of low terraces of the Upper Ob River region, known as the Suzun Strata. The lower stage of terraces is composed of alluvial sediments, and the upper one is epresented by subaerial complex, which includes both deluvium and aeolian deposits. The height of areas varies significantly and is predetermined by thickness of the subaerial complex in each particular area. Сonsequently, the geomorphological principle does not work when differentiating the Suzun Strata into heterochronous geological bodies of accumulative terraces above the flood-plain.

AbstractThe sources of Zn, Pb and Cd in alluvial and stream sediments have been studied in the area of historical Zn smelting tradition. 30 samples of stream sediments and samples from 4 alluvial sediment profiles were collected. Fractions 0.125–0.063 and < 0.063 mm were analysed by the means of ICP-MS prior 4-acid digestion. The highest levels of Zn, Cd and Pb were detected in the alluvial sediments in the closest vicinity to the abandoned slag and ore roasting residue waste dumps, reaching 96 and 4520 mg/kg, 522 and 26,800 mg/kg and 3.7 and 31 mg/kg for Pb, Zn and Cd in stream and alluvial sediments, respectively. The Voglajna River then transports contamination particles into the Savinja River, which afterwards flows into the Sava River. Consequently, the anomaly can even be detected in the Sava River, more than 30 km downstream. Higher levels of Pb, Zn and Cd have been found in fraction < 0.063 mm compared to 0.125–0.063 mm fraction. Impacts of historically contaminated soil erosion and in particular the wash-out of Zn-smelting waste from the improperly managed waste dump were recognised as the dominant sources of Zn, Cd and Pb in the stream and alluvial sediments.

The origin of alluvial fans at the drainage basin or the margins of the arid sedimentary basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NETP) has been a focus of debate among scientific communities. Extensive alluvial fans had developed in the mountain-basin systems of this region during the late Pleistocene. Based on geomorphic/stratigraphic studies and the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology, we investigated numerous alluvial sequences in the drainage basin of the coupled mountain-basin system on the NETP. Sedimentologic analyses showed that these alluvial sediments mainly comprise crudely meter and decimeter beds of fanglomerate and sandy lenticles, which occasionally contain boulders in the thinner layers. OSL dating results showed that the alluvial sediments were mainly developed during the late MIS 5, MIS 3, and Last Glaciation and Deglaciation (maximum aggradations), while little had occurred during the early Holocene. Comparing our ages and their probability density curves with those of glacial advances from the northeastern/eastern TP, the consistency of both records during different stages since the late Pleistocene suggested that the development of alluvial fans was driven by glacier activities, which yielded abundant outwash, feeding alluvial aggradations. Based on this finding, together with results of previous studies, we argued that the dynamics of alluvial geomorphic processes had a paleoclimatic origin rather than surface uplifts. Further studies indicated that the precipitation of glaciations originated from the ISM northward intrusion during the late MIS 5, MIS 3, and Holocene; however, it was mainly influenced by the westerlies during the Last Glaciation and Deglaciation. Therefore, the development of alluvial fans on the NETP represents coupling signals of the ISM and the westerlies on the interglacial–glacial cycle timescales. The coupling evolution of glacier activities and alluvial aggradations in the drainage basins of mountain-basin systems on the NETP provides a model for assessing the linkages between regional geomorphic processes and atmospheric circulations on hemispheric scales.

Cropmarks are a major factor in the effectiveness of traditional aerial archaeology. Identified almost 100 years ago, the positive and negative features shown by cropmarks are now well understood, as are the role of the different cultivated plants and the importance of precipitation and other elements of the physical environment. Generations of aerial archaeologists are in possession of empirical knowledge, allowing them to find as many cropmarks as possible every year. However, the essential analyses belong mostly to the predigital period, while the significant growth of datasets in the last 30 years could open a new chapter. This is especially true in the case of Hungary, as scholars believe it to be one of the most promising cropmark areas in Europe. The characteristics of soil formed of Late Quaternary alluvial sediments are intimately connected to the young geological/geomorphological background. The predictive soil maps elaborated within the framework of renewed data on Hungarian soil spatial infrastructure use legacy, together with recent remote sensing imagery. Based on the results from three study areas investigated, analyses using statistical methods (the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Random Forest tests) showed a different relative predominance of pedological variables in each study area. The geomorphological differences between the study areas explain these variations satisfactorily.

<p>Amendment of alluvial sediments with carbon rich materials such as biochars can be an effective method for controlling the penetration of hazardous substances from river water into drinking water sources during river bank filtration (RBF). In this work, the transport of chlorinated phenols (CPs) during simulated RBF through Danube alluvial sediment with and without biochar amendment was studied. In order to assess the effect of the biochar amendment on CPs retention in the alluvial sediment, column experiments were carried out, with the addition of biocide to exclude the influence of biodegradation. Four CPs that differ in polarity were used as sorbates: 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP). For the column packing, Danube alluvial sediment was used, characterized as a mesoporous sandy material with low organic carbon content (1.57 %) and small specific surface area (1.65 m2/g). In contrast, the material used as the amendment in the column experiment is a biochar with high organic carbon content (89.8 %) and large specific surface area (341 m2/g). The breakthrough curves obtained for the alluvial sediment column without biochar amendment showed poor retention of all investigated CPs. Retardation factors (<em>R</em>d) for 4-CP, 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP were 1.65, 1.98 and 1.48, respectively, whereas for PCP, <em>R</em>d was somewhat higher (4.28) most likely due to the fact that it&#8217;s nonpolar nature greatly affects its distribution between the solid and aqueous phase. The addition of biochar into the alluvial sediment at a 0.5 % mass ratio significantly increased the retardation of all investigated CPs. The obtained <em>R</em>d values for 4-CP, 2,4-DCP, 2,4,6-TCP and PCP were 102, 83, 78 and 92, respectively. The general increase in retardation of all investigated CPs can be explained by the increase of organic carbon content in the alluvial sediment by the addition of biochar, which is known to be the main fraction for organic components sorption in sediments and soils. In addition, the enhanced affinity of the alluvial sediment to retain the more polar CPs after biochar amendment indicates that sorption is carried out not only through nonpolar interactions, but also by electrostatic interactions between the CPs and functional groups on the surface of the biochar. The results show that biochar amendment of alluvial sediments could have a great potential for organic contaminants retention in the RBF zone, thus decreasing the risk of groundwater and drinking water sources contamination.</p><p><strong>Acknowledgement: </strong>The authors acknowledge financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia (Grant No. &#8234;451-03-68/&#8234;2020-14/ 200125). Abstract We present results from a multidisciplinary investigation of the Jiujing fault (JJF) system and adjacent Jiujing Basin in the southern Beishan block, western China. Structural and geomorphological fieldwork involving fault and landform investigations, remote sensing analysis of satellite and drone imagery, analysis of drill-core data, paleoseismological trench studies, and Quaternary dating of alluvial sediments suggest the JJF is a late Pleistocene to Holocene oblique sinistral-slip normal fault. Satellite image analysis indicates that the JJF is a connecting structure between two regional E-W-trending Quaternary left-lateral fault systems. The Jiujing Basin is the largest and best developed of three parallel NE-striking transtensional basins within an evolving sinistral transtensional duplex. Sinistral transtension is compatible with the orientation of inherited basement strike belts, NE-directed SHmax, and the modern E-NE-directed geodetic velocity field. Cosmogenic 26Al/10Be burial dating of the deepest sediments in the Jiujing Basin indicates that the basin began to form at ~5.5 Ma. Our study reveals a previously unreported actively deforming domain of transtensional deformation 100 km north of Tibet in a sector of the Beishan previously considered tectonically quiescent. Recognition of latest Miocene-Recent crustal reactivation in the Jiujing region has important implications for earthquake hazards in the Beishan and western Hexi Corridor/North Tibetan foreland sectors of the Silk Road Economic Belt. Additionally, we compare the timing of latest Miocene-Recent crustal reactivation in the southern Beishan with the documented onset of reactivation in other deforming regions north of Tibet.

The composition, structure, and formation features of the exogenous anomalous geochemical fields (AGCFs) identified through stream sediments (SSs) are considered here within the Pestrinsk silver-bearing system and the Goltsovy silver-polymetallic deposit. The research was performed in the southern part of the Balygychan-Sugoy trough (northeastern Russia). The exogenous AGCFs of the main indicator elements of ores, formed in cryolithogenesis zone conditions, were studied. We used the results of multi-scale areal geochemical surveys of SSs. A survey of SSs at 1:200,000 scale was found to be effective at the stage of regional forecasting. Indeed, it is characterized by simplicity and the possibility of obtaining information operatively regarding the metallogeny of the area. It was found that at the local forecast stage, when prospecting for mineralization, the most effective was a survey of SSs at 1:50,000 scale. The AGCFs identified during this survey were distinguished by a richer component composition, higher contrast, and closer relationship with ores. During the lithochemical sampling of the watercourse heads, where alluvial sediments were found to be almost completely absent, a positive result was obtained by the bryolithochemical method, which is based on moss sampling together with a fine fraction of alluvium held by a moss cushion. The method enabled the sampling of watercourse heads and thus yielded information about the presence or absence of anomalous concentration fields of ore elements.

Abstract The present work brings information on threats to the subterranean fishes in Brazil. Currently, at least 36 species are known, 22 of which are already formally described. Endemism is the rule for most of them. Regarding their conservation, these fishes are in general considered threatened: and most of the already formally described species are included in national lists of threatened fauna, and only four of them are included in the global list of the IUCN. Regarding habitats, Brazilian subterranean fishes occur in alluvial sediments (part of the hyporheic zone), shallow base-level streams, flooded caves, lakes in the water table, upper vadose tributaries, and epikarst aquifers. We detected 11 main threats, mainly related to agriculture, pasture, and hydroelectric plans, but unmanaged tourism and pollution are also significant threats. Two threats affect a high number of species (physical change of the habitat and food restriction). The river basins with the higher number of identified threats are the upper Tocantins (eight) followed by the upper Paraguaçu (six). Effective proposals to protect this neglected component of the Brazilian biodiversity are still scarce, such as monitoring projects and their function in the subterranean communities, besides education projects aiming to develop public awareness.
