Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to elaborate new calculation schemes for evaluating the strength parameters of railway rolling stock parts with non-local properties of surface layers in the presence of elliptical stress concentrators. Design/methodology/approach: Using the proposed approaches of developed mathematical modelling and open software for calculating FEniCS, it were established the most dangerous angles of stress concentrator orientation and the required thickness of the hardened zones of parts, which ensures their minimum softening during operation. Findings: It is shown that for an elliptical stress concentrator with any orientation angle, there is a certain key size of surface hardening thickness, the exceeding the value of which does not have influence on the operational strength of the parts, but rise the price of technological operations. Research limitations/implications: In this paper proposes a method for computation the impact of the orientation of the surface elliptical stress concentrators on the contact strength of parts under conditions of dominate friction power loads. Practical implications: The obtained results were used to set the modes of plasma hardening, which increase the contact strength of railway parts with elliptical stress concentrators. Originality/value: Using the approaches of contact mechanics, mathematical and computer modelling, methods of controlling the contact strength of the parts with the surface elliptical stress concentrators were proposed for the first time.

Introduction. The strength of construction materials when used under cyclic loads is of great importance in design engineering. A significant number of factors that affect the fatigue resistance have predetermined the creation of numerous methods that consider such influence. Nondestructive methods that are based on the connection of the physical degradation of material with strain properties enable evaluating experimentally the fatigue properties of materials. Purpose of study: the analysis of the processes of energy dissipation and strain accumulation during the inelastic cyclic strain of samples, using the VT6 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy and the D16 (Al-Cu-Mg) aluminum alloy before and after the technological impact. The work experimentally investigates the physical processes of degradation of the VT6 and D16 alloy samples that accompany the process of fatigue failure in materials with homogeneous and inhomogeneous stress-strain states in the concentrator (in the form of a hole and a weld). Typical modes are used to reach the fatigue testing that determine the critical stress in a material sample – the stress at which physical properties (temperature, strain) change without reaching the fatigue failure of samples. Critical stress amplitudes in the cycle, based on the data obtained during the experiment and the results of mathematical simulation, are compared. The effect of stress concentrators on critical loads that a detail can withstand after a unit operation is estimated by the finite-element method (FEM). As a result, the effect of the operational and technological factors on critical stress determined by strain and temperature is estimated. Comparative tests of the VT6 and D16 alloy samples with and without stress concentrators showed that the amplitudes of critical stress decrease by more than 30% in comparison with the ones that are without stress concentrators. The low-cycle fatigue tests of the D16 alloy samples are carried out. Mathematical simulation of the cyclic strain of the samples is carried out using MSC.Marc package. The results of the cyclic loading tests, which show that the characteristics of the technological process reduce the amplitudes of the critical stress of the VT6 and D16 alloys and affect the fatigue properties of the D16 aluminum alloy, are discussed. Mathematical simulation corresponded positively to the experimental data. Such correspondence indicates the possibility of conducting qualitative numerical assessments of the beginning of the inelastic strain accumulation process in structures with stress concentrators under the cyclic stress and the increasing stress amplitude, using the typical sample made of hardening elastoplastic material.

The regularities of influence of AlN and TiN coatings on stress-strain state of Al2O3‒TiC ceramics structural elements, which forming its surface layer, under influence of heat flow are established. The formation of microstructural stress concentrators at the boundary of AlN and TiN coatings with the initial ceramics is revealed.

Abstract We study the initiation of damage in a polymeric body in which there is a line defect due to the formation of a “weld line” that occurs when two polymer streams join together and then solidify. We show that damage initiates in the region of weakness, namely the “weld line” based on a criterion for damage that was developed earlier in [1]. We also show that if there are other stress concentrators also additionally present, such as a hole, then there is a competition between the stresses induced due to the weakness and the stress as a consequence of the stress concentrator (in this instance a hole). This study adds more credence to the criterion for the initiation of damage that is based completely on knowledge of information at the current configuration of the body, that is, the criterion for damage is not based on the value of quantities that also need information based on a reference configuration such as the stress or strain.

The paper presents a result of experimental tests of welded S355 samples subjected to bending loading. In order to analyze how the fillet joints’ shape and the load ratio affect the crack growth, we selected two kinds of the fillet shape: concave and convex, and load ratios, namely R = −1. Samples with stress concentrators in form of the two-sided fillet welded joint were tested. The test results were compared to experiments conducted on welds samples with and without heat treatment.

The paper presents an elastic coupling with bolts and intermediary non-metallic elements, which allows for radial and axial deviation and can absorb shocks and torsional vibrations. The designed bolts have a particular shape of a circular area of a length equal to the width of the non-metallic element, a cylindrical area larger than the diameter of the cylindrical groove where the non-metallic elements are mounted, and a cylindrical area smaller than the threaded area to avoid stress concentrators and bolt breakage. The coupling represents a symmetrical piece, having two planes of symmetry. Therefore, the study of such a mechanical system can be considerably simplified considering the design and description of the repeating elements. The novelty of this coupling consists in the existence of an intermediate disc between two half-couplings (driving and driven half-coupling). The non-metallic elements with different shapes are made of different types of rubber, mounted on cylindrical bolts fixed by the driving half-coupling, transmitting the motion in both directions.
