Acquiring an optically transparent feature on the wideband frequency selective surface (FSS), particularly for smart city applications (building window and transportation services) and vehicle windows, is a challenging task. Hence, this study assessed the performance of optically transparent mosaic frequency selective surfaces (MFSS) with a conductive metallic element unit cell that integrated Koch fractal and double hexagonal loop fabricated on a polycarbonate substrate. The opaque and transparent features of the MFSS were studied. While the study on opaque MFSS revealed the advantage of having wideband responses, the study on transparent MFSS was performed to determine the optical transparency application with wideband feature. To comprehend the MFSS design, the evolutionary influence of the unit cell on the performance of MFSS was investigated and discussed thoroughly in this paper. Both the opaque and transparent MFSS yielded wideband bandstop and bandpass responses with low cross-polarisation (−37 dB), whereas the angular stability was limited to only 25°. The transparent MFSS displayed high-level transparency exceeding 70%. Both the simulated and measured performance comparison exhibited good correlation for both opaque and transparent MFSS. The proposed transparent MFSS with wideband frequency response and low cross-polarisation features signified a promising filtering potential in multiple applications.

The determination of metal ions is important for nutritional and toxicological assessment. Atomic spectrometric techniques are highly efficient for the determination of these species, but the high costs of acquisition and maintenance hinder the application of these techniques. Inexpensive alternatives for metallic element determination are based on dedicated biosensors. These devices mimic biological systems and convert biochemical processes into physical outputs and can be used for the sensitive and selective determination of chemical species such as cations. In this work, an overview of the proposed biosensors for metal ions determination was carried out considering the last 15 years of publications. Statistical data on the applications, response mechanisms, instrumentation designs, applications of nanomaterials, and multielement analysis are herein discussed.

Abstract The Jawara Field in Jember Regency is a location where it is indicated that there are precious metal deposits in the form of porphyry type Gold and Copper. In this study, the focus is more on the search for metal mineral deposits related to the elements of Gold (Au) and Copper (Cu), namely the metal mineral chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) as the main carrier minerals for Au, Cu, Ag, as impurities. The results of alteration products in the form of weathered minerals are also the focus of research. The analysis used to detect metallic element content and the presence of metallic and non-metallic minerals is by petrographic analysis, mineragraphy analysis, sediment grain analysis and geochemical analysis. Based on the results of the mineragraphy analysis, it was proven that the metal mineral chalcopyrite was found in the JAFA 6 BPS sample which is a carrier mineral for the metallic copper element and silver was also found in JAFA 2 ALT. In addition, the results of the sediment grain analysis also found metal mineral grains and metal elements, namely copper and iron elements in all JAFA samples. The results of petrographic analysis show that the weathered minerals in the form of kaolinite, alunite, and smectite are products of hydrothermal alteration activities. Based on these results, the research area is divided into 3 alteration zones, namely potassic, propylitic, and argillic alteration zones. The results of the geochemical analysis showed that the highest levels of copper were found in JAFA 5 as much as 13.9 ppm and the highest levels of iron in JAFA 6 were 390.8 ppm. From the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that it is true that there are metal mineral deposits and metal elements in the form of sediment grains and porphyry-type Au and Cu elements.

Abstract We predict an allotrope of yttrium with an incommensurate host-guest structure by using ab initio random structure searching technique, based on first-principles calculation. Along with, we propose a set analogous commensurate supercells, which is incommensurate ratio (c H /c G), by approximating the different the number of guest atoms in channels in along c axis of the host structure. Herein, our results show that c H /c G = 5/4 is energetically stable. Subsequently, an incommensurate host-guest structure is found to be thermodynamically and dynamically stable within harmonic level. The hybridization of spd explains the stability of the host-guest structure under high pressure conditions. The distributions of electrons between the host and guest atoms are indicated strong and weak electron localization of spd bonds. This findings suggest that the host-guest structure is more likely to be achieved experimentally in this metallic element at moderate pressure.

AbstractSome of the three-dimensional (3D) crystal structures are constructed by stacking two-dimensional (2D) layers. To study whether this geometric concept, i.e., using 2D layers as building blocks for 3D structures, can be applied to computational materials design, we theoretically investigate the dynamical stability of copper-based compounds CuX (a metallic element X) in the B$$_h$$ h and L1$$_1$$ 1 structures constructed from the buckled honeycomb (BHC) structure and in the B2 and L1$$_0$$ 0 structures constructed from the buckled square (BSQ) structure. We demonstrate that (i) if CuX in the BHC structure is dynamically stable, those in the B$$_h$$ h and L1$$_1$$ 1 structures are also stable. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we particularly show that CuAu in the B$$_h$$ h and L1$$_1$$ 1 structures withstand temperatures as high as 1000 K. Although the interrelationship of the metastability between the BSQ and the 3D structures (B2 and L1$$_0$$ 0 ) is not clear, we find that (ii) if CuX in the B2 (L1$$_0$$ 0 ) structure is dynamically stable, that in the L1$$_0$$ 0 (B2) is unstable. This is rationalized by the tetragonal Bain path calculations.

The paper presents an elastic coupling with bolts and intermediary non-metallic elements, which allows for radial and axial deviation and can absorb shocks and torsional vibrations. The designed bolts have a particular shape of a circular area of a length equal to the width of the non-metallic element, a cylindrical area larger than the diameter of the cylindrical groove where the non-metallic elements are mounted, and a cylindrical area smaller than the threaded area to avoid stress concentrators and bolt breakage. The coupling represents a symmetrical piece, having two planes of symmetry. Therefore, the study of such a mechanical system can be considerably simplified considering the design and description of the repeating elements. The novelty of this coupling consists in the existence of an intermediate disc between two half-couplings (driving and driven half-coupling). The non-metallic elements with different shapes are made of different types of rubber, mounted on cylindrical bolts fixed by the driving half-coupling, transmitting the motion in both directions.
